Knocked up in new country!
I'm a Canadian recently relocated to the US.
I'm missing my friends and looking to give and receive advice from other ladies "in the family way"
Nice to meet you all!

Friday, 18 July Hi Pam,
Yes, looking back (and as there was no real harm done), the incident with the 'fire' was quite amusing!! I just couldn't believe it at the time. I hope that is a first AND last in pregnancy!!
I am so NOT a wonderful mum. I am quite the opposite. I am always SO busy with things that I feel I never have enough time properly for either of the girls. I am always rushing between home, work and dropping them off/picking them up from places. I get tired, stressed and grumpy. I hate all the domestic chores that have to be done. BUT, I hope that the HUGE love I have for my girls makes up for all of my inadequacies. Thankfully they do seem to be very happy contented kids and I feel so proud to be their mum. I am for sure the lucky one..
You don't need to worry - you will be a great mum!! It is so strange thinking that the baby you are carrying about inside will soon be a real living person. I still can't get my head around the fact that my big tummy bump will be a real baby soon!!
I have booked an appointment for a private 3/4d scan. We (the whole family) are going on Sunday at 1pm. It will be great for my two girls to see the baby....we are all looking forward to it.
It has been a good day here. I have just been for a nice lunch with my husband as it is my birthday today (I am 37 - eek! Getting closer to 40!!) and it is also my Wedding Anniversary. I got married to Antony 16 years ago today. As we both work at the University we could meet up for lunch easily - so we went to a nice restaurant for lunch without the children. It was very relaxing! The only downside is that I have to work today....only a couple more hours to go until I can go home!!
I have just seen my midwife (yesterday). All the usual checks were fine - blood pressure nice and low (117/61) and the baby is measuring spot on target for 28 weeks. She took blood for various tests including glucose to check for GD. If I don't hear anything soon then I have to assume everything is ok and if not I will have to go through the 3hr testing (I am keeping my fingers crossed that there won't be any problems!)
I hope that things are OK with you. I will try and add some images from the Sunday's scan. Take care and have a great weekend.
Valerie

Sunday, 13 July HI Pam!! Good to hear from you!!
I am so pleased that you have found an apartment. Like you said, maybe all of this has been for the best as I remember you saying that you weren't too keen on where you were living anyway. Having to move is always a nightmare whenever you do it, but it is much worse once you have a baby or children. At least you will still have lots of time to get settled in before the baby makes his/her appearance.
We made great progress last weekend - we installed new furniture in the girls bedroom. There is now less junk in the spare room and the 3 pieces of furniture that were in the girls room have been transferred to the spare room, ready for the baby things to go into. We are going to decorate sometime next year, so for now the room has had a really good clean. It actually resembles a bedroom now!
It has been very satisfying as I finally have somewhere to start to collect the baby things together. I have now washed all the newborn baby clothes and they are put away in the drawers. I even bought a pack of nappies today! I have made a list of things that I need to buy over the next couple of months - there are not too many things, nothing major, but as my memory isn't so great at the moment, the list will be a help!!
The girls are really pleased with their new bedroom furniture!! They have a desk in their room now which will be handy for my eldest daughter to do her homework etc. She is getting to the age where she has more sent home from school to do, and it can be hard for her with constant interruptions from her 4 year old little sister! I guess even more so with a baby crying too later this year!!
However, I am certainly a bit of a liability at the moment! I survived an (almost) major disaster a couple of days ago when I nearly set fire to our kitchen!! I left a pan of pasta cooking for a few minutes and when I returned I was shocked to see fairly big flames!! I panicked and threw a jug of water over them, which calmed it down, but didn't quite put out the small fire, so then I covered it in a wet towel. The fire had been caused by the plastic handle of a utensil melting as it was too close to the heat. It must have got so hot it caught alight. Thankfully there is no real damage done, other than having a lot of clearing up to do from the melted plastic, water etc - but it was a big shock and quite scary at the time! It just goes to show how easy it is for these things to happen as I was only away from the cooker for a few minutes!! OMG - pregnancy and multi-tasking don't really go together! I must just focus on one thing at a time, especially when it involves cooking!
Speak to you soon, Val x

Saturday, 5 July Hi Pam
Please don't apologise about not having been able to write recently - it sounds as though you have bigger worries with the flooding problem in your apartment. That sounds like a bit of a nightmare. Especially as you are now having to find somewhere new to rent. I hope that you can get a nice new place quickly - and hopefully one that is dry this time too!
Make the most of being with your family. Parents always enjoy making a big fuss of their pregnant daughters! It must be good to have a bit of unexpected time with your family and friends in Ontario. I hope you get chance to relax and enjoy yourself while you are there.
I have been re-living my Bon Jovi concert experience today playing my music very loudly while I have been busy with a LOT of jobs at home! I am making good progress with some sorting out but there seems such a lot to do (mostly because our spare room has been used as a bit of a 'junk' room over the last few years and now it is needed - - eek!).
We have also bought the girls some new bedroom furniture for their room as the wardrobes that they have been using are small ones that will be perfect for the baby, but a bit too short now for some of their dresses! We have spent the whole day today swapping furniture over and moving things around the house. Their bedroom looks really good now (although VERY pink!). It has been exhausting work though...I am looking forward to some sleep soon!!
I hope that you are settled back in New York soon and that having to move apartments doesn't prove too stressful. Don't worry at all if you don't get onto a PC - I will look forward to hearing from you when you get chance.
Hope you are having a good weekend

Wednesday, 25 June Hi Pam! Sorry to hear that you have had problems with flooding. I hope that it hasn't caused you too much work. Are you back to normal now? Was it due to a burst pipe or drains or rain? Sounds like a bit of a nightmare....
It sounds as though you had a fantastic time with your friend Laura. Eating out is a must when you have someone to visit I think! I seem to have just been eating too much, forget about the going out bit!! I am feeling big and round and things like putting on my shoes etc. are starting to get a bit more difficult!! AND there are still 15 weeks to go!! Yikes!
You were right - it was the Bon Jovi concert on Sunday night!! I managed to get a night away with my husband without the children also!! We had a couple of days to see the concert in Manchester (which is about 2 hours by car from where we live). I have been a fan of the band since I was 15 and have seen them as often as I can when they tour the UK. This was probably the best concert of theirs I have been to and lived up to all my expectations. Jon Bon Jovi is 46 now, but seemed to have the energy of someone half the age (I wish I had as much energy!) The band played for 2 hours 45 minutes and the music was outstanding! It was very strange to be away from the children for so long (we haven't had a night away from them for over a year), but it was lovely to have some time alone with my husband. Somehow I think it will be the last time for quite a while (years even!!) with a new baby due soon. Apologies about my taste in music
Think the baby enjoyed the music - there was certainly a lot of moving around going on!!
How was your weekend? Hope you are doing well.

Friday, 20 June Hey put that smile on your face. I had a terrible moody meltdown last night, not sure really what started it or why it went on so long. Just remember this is a very moody stage in pregnancy and you are also dealing with the stress of relocating. That is huge!!! You must realise that relocating for non preggers people is bad but for a girl with a baby growing inside of her it is triple worse.
So do not feel bad at being moody with hubbie. As for the curse I know how you feel, I went through those thoughts myself when I first moved here, often second guessing myslef if i had done the right thing. But really you have, it will show in a few months time and years looking back. So Have a big hug from me and take a deep breath. You are doing really well and just need a relaxing treat. So go find something you like and enjoy.
Will keep on praying for you

Wednesday, 18 June How's it going? I feel heaps better, now uterus is up and out of pelvis. Sleep is a problem particularly becuase I use to sleep comatose! I really want to find a sack and fill it with sand equivalent to my extra weight, strap it on hubby for a few hours a night and see how he copes. Why is it that men get a sniffle and it is the end of the world!! sparklyval -
Saturday, 14 June I love your adaptation of the BJ lyrics - made me LOL! Also, thank you for your kind words about my creative writing efforts! In fact it was more a kind of technical writing - a bit dull actually! But at least it kept my brain cells from dying off. I would like to try writing a book some time in the future. I don't really know what about, but it is something I have thought about for when I retire LOL - how LONG away that is!!
Oh yes, I am definitely with you about becoming parents letting you do all those things you remember enjoying as a child yourself! It is Father's Day here on Sunday and as a special treat we are taking my girls Dad to the Zoo!! The best thing of all is that he is really looking forward to the trip!! We have an overnight stay in a hotel on Saturday and the zoo visit on Sunday. PERFECT for the big kid my hubby is!
I bet you are enjoying seeing your friend Laura this week. What kind of things will you get up to? Whatever you do, I hope you have FUN!
Speak to you soon, Valerie x Asya -

Tuesday, 10 June Hi Pam
On the subject of music and babies, I am going to see Bon Jovi in concert on 22nd June!! I am so excited - like a teenager - they are my number one all time favourite band since I was about 15! I reckon this poor babe will be jumping out of her skin when they start playing!! I went to see a few bands when I was expecting Kate and I remember her moving about a lot while the music was on. I wonder what it actually sounds like from inside!!?
I like the stuff on your website. It must be so great to have your own business. I did some freelance writing for a while and it was nice to be my own boss. I had a contract to supply careers job descriptions to a web-based careers information provider, but as I was working from home I could organise work to suit myself. Have you always worked in the same field? I wish I had a creative side - I have never been any good at drawing or painting or making things. Luckily my girls don't take after me - they are always drawing me lovely little pictures and making things with lots of glue and sellotape....you have all of this to come!!
Sorry to hear about your noisy neighbours. It must be stressful. We have managed to finally find somewhere fairly quiet to live as we have had noise problems in the past. We haven't lived in a flat for a long time, but even in a detached house it is surprising how much noise can surround you. We live in the country now with a field at the back and a canal at the front. It isn't in the middle of nowhere so we do get some noise from traffic etc. but it is quite peaceful. Have you got plans to move? Are you buying or renting?
I seem to have had a busier weekend than normal as I was working all day on Sunday and on Saturday I was helping with the school fair....on the cake stall!! It was good fun, but not the healthiest place to be for a pregnant lady. I managed to resist eating all of the cakes (I said ALL)! I did have to sample some. No wonder I have gained so much weight in the last week!! I look like a giant round meringue!
How are things with you? Are you beginning to feel a bit more settled in your new city/country? Hope things are good. Bestest, Val
