This is my third child. I've kind of come full circle - I have two lovely little girls from a previous marriage and due to the fact that I was very young when I got married the first time and started having children, they are going to be 12 and 10 by the time their new little brother or sister arrives. My husband is really excited, he loves being a dad (step) but didn't come into our lives until the girls were 6 and 8 so he missed out on all the "baby" stuff. We are all really excited and I swear it feels like this is all BRAND NEW! Lots of things different about this pregnancy so I appreciate comments and feedback... I'm the only preggers one around here in my family though I do have a friend who is due ANYTIME NOW, so I'm on this site to connect with others who are going through this wonderful experience also! Baby Dust to ALL!!!!

Update: June 2nd

I don't know why I never post updates, except that I'm usually looking at the conversation posts or looking at birth stories, or whatever. There are a lot of cool things on this site to take up my time. Anyway, It looks like another girl for us at some point this month. We are very excited, though have had a few scares - I was diagnosed with a single umbilical artery around 20 weeks, but all further tests came back normal, and so far the growth and everything else with the baby looks good, so we are going on that info and trying not to let the quazi imperfect 2 cord vessel be of concern. I thank everybody who has responded to questions and concerns, I love this network of women and mommies to be, and have told any and everybody who will listen about this site!!!

It sounds like you already know how much pain to expect. I just want you to know tons of studies have been done and epidurals do not affect breast feeding. They also do not slow recovery time at all. They actually wear off so close to birth, that the medication is flushed out of your system within a few hours. I think you should give it a try. Just remember not to wait too late into your labor to get it done. You may go faster this time! :)

Hello, I am a labor and delivery nurse so I can answer just about all of your questions about an epidural. First off, I would wait to get one until you cervix starts to change. An epidural lasts until about one-two hours after birth and starts to wear off. It takes just a few minutes to place it and once you are good an numb, the nurse will put in a catheter to drain urine since you will not feel a full bladder. Spinal h/a occurs rarely. Chances are more in your favor that you will be fine. I think that epidurals are great. They help you relax more and enjoy your birth. Being that this is your third, I would not wait to far long into your labor to get it! Good Luck and write if you have any other questions.

I had a epidural with my first one, and once I got it I did not feel a thing!! I was also very happy and alert after they gave it to me!! I loved it and woudl never do it any other way!! You have been through enough pain I would try the epi, you will be happy!

I'm about to have my 4th. I had an epidural with my first, and ended up having an emergency c-section, an epidural and VBAC with my second, and natural with my third. I wasn't planning on having a natural birth with my third, but they tried 5 times to get the epidural needle in the right way, and just couldn't make in work. In fact, the needle hurt so badly, that I would never voluntarily have one again. If you want just a little bit of relief, you can ask for a tiny bit of demerol plus a muscle relaxer, and that shouldn't make you too tired. I was pro-epidural until 15 months ago, and the pain of a needle hitting bundles of nerves that run thoughout a section of your body, is much worse to me than feeling a few muscles stretched and torn. Neither one is too pleasant though, I don't suppose. I had lower back and leg pain for about 2 months after each of my epidurals, but not anything that would have dissuaded me at the time from having an epidural. They're wonderful if someone puts it in that knows what they're doing. It's a tough decision, and not one that you can completely make until you're in labor. I hope that everything goes really well for you, no matter what you decide to do. :-)

I went natural for my son, and had the epidural with my daughter (got it at 9 cm so I did my natural part). My theory is go as long as I can natural and then get it again. As you know the pain is excruciating and very distracting. With the epidural contrary to what you hear, I was completely able to move my legs-sluggishly, but they were tingly (numb) so although I could move them, if I were to stand, I would have fallen.. I was able to pull my legs up and still push, no C section. The major difference is the sensation to push. When you go natural you feel like you are going to embarass yourself by goin poop in front of everyone. With the epidural, the nurse told me a contraction was coming on and to push, when the baby was literally right there, I still could feel slight pressure to know I had made progress. I loved that I could focus during labor, I was able to have conversations with my family instead of screaming and crying and wishing for death. I was able to hold the baby and really see her and watch what they did to her as opposed to writhing in after pain. The afterwards (day later) was the itch. Oh God do your legs itch, it is the drugs wearing off, a few hours (prob less I have no sense of time) they made me stand up to pee, and when I hobbled over, I passed and was able to keep it going. I am absolutely all for the epidural, not so much cause of the pain free (yeah right) but the focus it allowed me to have on what others were doing in the room and on my own care. Good luck!!!

I've done it both ways as well. My first I didn't have one and the last 2 I did. I went into all of them with the outlook that I would go natural as long as possible. The epi does help with the pain. You can relax so that part is good. Bad side, for one, you can't move. You have no control over your lower body. If they put too much meds in the epi, you can loose some feeling in the lower part of your lungs (that happened with my last daughter)...around here, they also will NOT let you out of bed for about 6-8 hours after you have the baby, due to your chance of falling. Healing, it didn't play any role in that. Back pain though I think most woman have after that. i still every now and again can feel where the needle went in at (probably all in my head)...

About the epi... I had one with my son. I recommend it. We all hear horror stories about them not working but Im sure they work more than they dont. My experience with it was great... total pain relief. I was able to be alert, not in pain and enjoy the birth and there were no side effects afterward. I mean it took a few hours to get the feeling back in my legs after they removed it, but after that there were no side effects.

Yes, the doctor says 99 percent that it's a boy. (Don't know why they can't say anything 100 percent in this country!) I was so surprised cause I was sure (and so was everyone else) that we were having a girl and to be honest, that's kind of what we were hoping for. In my family, my brother is the only male of the ten cousins (we joke that we have a girl's baseball team and he can coach). My one cousin just had a son on New Year's Eve and now it looks like we're having a son, so I guess the tables are turning for the next generation of cousins.

I'm going to be getting an epi again because everything went so smooth and easy my 1st time around. However, I was already an 8-9 when I got to the hospital so I did most of the laboring without any meds, but the acctual delivery was done with an epi. I had no headache, no back pain, nothing... I did heal slow, but I had enlarged vericose veins in my crotch that exploaded when I was pushing, so I blame it on that... they couldn't hardly control my swelling because of it, but it obviously wasn't epi related. My only concern is the acctual process of getting it. I had TERRIBLE back labor with my 1st and since I was already so dialated I was having contraction on top of contraction and they had to dig through those contracting muscles to give it to me. I'm not going to lie... getting the epidural was the most pain I think I have ever been in, but in the end it was REALLY worth it. I think the only reason it hurt so much was because of how far into the laboring process I was. However, like I said, I do plan on getting one again, I just hope to get it in a more comfortable stage of labor. Hope I helped a little bit!

To answer some of your questions about the epidural. I have 2 daughter and I had a epidural with both of them. I am wanting to go all natural this time since my last one it didn't work in the area it was supposed to. LOL.. So I felt everything. It doesn't take longer to heal afterwards if you have a epi. but your back will most likely hurt a bit. I had some pain in my lower back after both of mine, and just in the area the epidural was at. The good thing about them is that they help you relax for a bit. I'm hoping for a fast labor this time even though my last one was only 5 hours. Hopefully this one will be even less. I hope these answers help a little!!!

I thought birthing time was supposed to get easier and faster with each baby? I was surprised to hear that you were thinking of epi for your fourth. But then I'm pregnant with my first so I really have no idea (and can't offer advice- sorry). I will be giving birth natural cause they don't use epis where I live (in Japan). To compensate, I'm doing hypnobabies, which is a self-hypnosis program that teaches you to relax and control discomfort with your mind. I love practicing for it (who doesn't like relaxing right?) Maybe you could try something like that too- search Hypnobabies on google or yahoo or if you ask me on my profile page, I'll send you some useful links, including video of women in labour using it- looks like the way to go to me!!

I had a fetal echocardiogram done last week to make sure everything with the heart was okay. I haven't heard from my doctor yet, so I assume that is good. I have an appointment with my obstetrician next Thursday anyways so I'll hear more then. Last time I went in I was told that they will do more ultrasounds in the third trimester to make sure everything measures up for the dates but that's it so far. I've been picking many brains about this and so far I have only heard positive feedback. I'll let you know next week what they be doing or how they will be monitoring the pregnancy when I find out. I feel her kicking around everyday, so I take comfort in that!

I was just told the same thing today, only one artery. They told me not to worry as there are no other markers but they are sending me to get another detailed scan just in case. I can't help but be worried.

My best friend's baby had the same thing. He is now a PERFECT little 2 1/2 year-old wild man. No problems at all. Don't stress and try not to read too much about it...it seems like all you see on the internet is worse case scenarios.

I was also diagnosed with this yesterday. I too show no other signs of abnormalities thank goodness. My doctor said not to worry and that we would do more monitoring later in the pregnancy. I know the odds are in our favor, but I feel your fears. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. Best wishes.

Hi. I know 2 people who have had the same cord issue. Both were told it is rare (they are sisters which made it even more rare)Both had healthy baby girls with no problems or effects. They were told there can be issues but were both 100% healthy. So if the Dr is not worried then dont freak out about it. Enjoy your pregnancy and look forward to your daughter. Hope this helps. :)

Yep we found out were having a boy! I kind of had the feeling it was a boy, this pregnancy I had no appetite in the beginning and smells drove me nuts, they made me so sick! I cant even cook raw meats anymore. Gross! My husband is so excited, he is a Jr so this baby will be named after him and his Dad and will be the III. I can't wait to hear what your having, good luck!
