Tuesday, 15 July Diflucan is an antifungal medicine that is absorbed into your system and fights the yeast that way instead of topically like nystatin. I am pretty sure that they don't give it to young babies though as it can cause stomach problems I believe. I actually took Travis in and the pediatrician couldn't find any thrush, he's had it forever and finally when I take him in it's gone. The day before I had given him acidophilus, taken apart a capsule of it and mixed it with water to make a paste and then gave it to him off of my finger. It is the live cultures in yogurt and in our bodies that help to control the overactive growth of yeast. I honestly believe that that is what finally got rid of it. I'm going to continue to give him a little each day for the rest of the week and then hopefully the yeast will be gone forever!!!! I hope the purple stuff works for you! littlecavalier -
Monday, 14 July I read that the purple stuff is bad, actually has carcinogens in it. Not sure if you were aware of that or not. It's called violet something I think, can't remember the exact name but I'm pretty sure it's not recommended for babies anymore. We're headed back to the doctor today as the grapefruit seed extract doesn't seem to be working. My guess is that they'll give him diflucan as that's the only thing that seems to work! So sorry you're still dealing with it too!!! littlecavalier -
Tuesday, 8 July Any luck getting rid of thrush? My son keeps getting little patches. I'm ordering grapefruit seed extract to dilute and spray in his mouth. I've done a lot of research, I just hope it works! If you still can't get rid of it let me know and I'll keep you updated on our progress! Also, I have started using one of the little finger toothbrushes to wipe the stuff in my sons mouth because it's easier and it doesn't absorb the medicine so I think it works better. littlecavalier -
Saturday, 21 June I hope you beat the dreaded thrush!!! I can't believe your pediatrician hasn't tried to be a little more helpful as thrush can be very painful for Mom and baby. ~NyMom -
Friday, 20 June You welcome... i know it can be a pain in the tail..I was so upset when my daughter had it ..my first never had it and it confused me that my second got it ugh.. but the grapefruit extract will definitely work better than the meds.. don't give up! it will pass! take care. ~NyMom -
Thursday, 19 June sorry for the long post..hope the site I gave you helps.. it is a natural remedy instead of pumping baby with meds. ~NyMom -
Thursday, 19 June chantal07-- My baby had thrush ..she was given Nystatin as well... I even begged to get some cream to treat my nippies even though I had not had thrush on them... what you can do is a 50/50 vinegar rinse on your nipples after each feeding... get your baby some baby toothpaste look for the one with milk enzymes if not regular baby toothpaste is fine...use a swab with a tiny amount of baby toothpaste and swab the baby's tongue and gums do this after every feeding.. you can even get a rag wet with distilled water ( because creepy things are in tap water and baby's need boiled or cleaned water) or baby water and wipe out the baby's mouth after each feed.. keep treating with nystatin offer it after a feeding so it can linger in his mouth rather than before a feeding where the milk is washing it out... I heard when the babies start solids the bacterias will balance out in their bodies which will control the yeast since we all have yeast in our bodies ...babies yeast just "gets out of control" so soon solids should regulate in the long run... just clean out his mouth after feedings do the vinegar and you will be fine... A friend of mine used 1 tablespoon of vinegar to a cup of water ( distilled water from the store) and used this to swab at her baby's mouth but I think the toothpaste is just fine.. you really don't want to mess with the balance of the baby's bacteria..so you can either do the 1 tablespoon to a cup of distilled water or the baby's toothpaste..don't let thrush make you paranoid..it is a normal thing that some times happens..practice good hygiene between you and your baby..anything that touches baby's mouth wash it out in hot water or throw in the rinse cycle of dishwasher... I don't know if this makes sense but since I am breast feeding my doc believes it is the fat in my breast milk that turns her tongue that color..sort of like if someone was on a kool aid diet drinking kol aid every 1 to 2 hours their tongue will be stained red.. My doc didn't prescribe diflucan because it causes intestinal distress in babies... so if you see nystatin is not working d this home remedy yourself as follows ( wish I known about this earlier) use grapefruit seed extract use 15 or 20 drops per ounce of distilled water.. swab baby's mouth with solution after feedings so he doesn't associate bad taste with nursing.. here is a site you can check with a mom who dealt with thrush and defeated it with grape seed extract..http://alisaterry.blogspot.com/2007/03/treating-thrush-with-grapefruit-seed.html littlecavalier -
Thursday, 19 June Have they tried giving your little one diflucan? My son was on nystatin for a week and it didn't work for him so they gave him diflucan and that worked like a charm. Nystatin is topical, it isn't absorbed into her stomach, so it's super important that you paint it all over her mouth, I usually use a q-tip. Also, the second time my son got thrush I was told to split up the doseage and use it after every feeding instead of just four times a day and this really seemed to help also. Have you had yourself tested for a vaginal yeast infection? When the thrush clears up what I do is continue to rinse my nipples in a 50/50 water and vinegar mix just as a precaution. This has really seeemed to help us. Definitely check with your pediatrician about the diflucan and splitting up the doseage of nystatin. I'm not sure if advice would be different for you as my son was 6 months when he had it and I didn't check so see how old your little one is. If he is really little then it is most likely caused by him and it isn't all that uncommon for newborns to get thrush, breast and bottle fed. If you use pacifiers be sure to boil them and also wash your bras in hot water and bleach to help kill the yeast. samlib -
