My birth story ladies.
All week long I had a few incidents where I wondered if my labor might be starting up. Then over the weekend I had a few hours of not feeling so great. I had belly pains and tightness that lasted for a few hours. I was pretty active and worked right up until Sunday afternoon. Monday I ran last minute errands and of course never finished LOL. I picked up my girls around 4:30pm then went to admissions at the hospital to get things going. My friend Jessica met us at the hospital and my oldest daughter’s best friend Cheyanne also came along. My youngest, Tristan was so jazzed and held my hand as she talked about everything that soon would be taking place. We had a relaxed atmosphere and seemed more like a party than preparing for the hard work ahead.
The nurses got me set up; we did all the paperwork and went over everything as we waited for the doctor. I got my lovely hospital gown and stripped down to put it on. They hooked me up to the baby heart monitor and contraction monitor. My doctor showed up about 6:30ish. He placed this catheter with a balloon inside my cervix then put water in it to expand the balloon. This along with the pill they gave me was to help get my cervix dilating. Hopefully it would be dilated about 3 to 4 centimeters or so by morning so I would have a head start when they started me on the drip to induce me. The pill they gave me was to help me get started as well. I was to get one every 4 hrs unless I was cramping well already. It didn’t have a taste and dissolved fairly quickly. It just felt gritty. I had to place it under my tongue as it dissolved. My doctor has surgery on Tuesdays and was debating on breaking my water in the morning. I reminded him I went fairly quickly after my water broke with my other two children. By 7:00 pm I was set up and the doctor went home telling me he would see me in the morning about 7am.
I had several visitors come by and the atmosphere was relaxed and excited. At 8:15pm I was allowed to eat my dinner. My friend Jessica had brought me a salad from McDonalds with chicken nuggets. About 9ish I noticed my contractions started up fairly quickly and asked the nurse about the monitor readings. She told me it wasn’t all that accurate and to be prepared for a long night. I told my friend Jessica I must just be a sissy because it felt like the contractions I had when I got started up with my other two. I requested to go to the bathroom around 9:30. The nurse unhooked my monitors and she showed me what went where so I could unhook and reset things as I needed. When I stood up we all noticed a blood spot about the size of a small saucer in my bed. The nurse said it must be from the catheter. I asked her if I could take a shower. She said if it would make me feel better I could. It was ok as long as I wasn’t in active labor. I of course jumped on it. I love showers and baths; nothing makes me feel more relaxed during stressful times. I was careful in my movements even though the doctor and nurses had assured me the catheter wouldn’t fall out. I stayed in the shower for a good 30 minutes and enjoyed the warm water hitting my belly. It somehow seemed to help the contractions be more tolerable. I didn’t want to take advantage so I made myself get out and carefully dried off. I was taking steps toward the door to leave the bathroom when my catheter just fell right out. There wasn’t much blood just a little and this long balloon looking rubber hose with a small circle blown up at the top. I was like oh crap; they aren’t going to let me out of the bed again now!!! I poked my head out of the bathroom and asked Keri or Jessica to please tell the nurse I was ready to get back in the bed. I also told them what had happened. The nurse came in a few minutes later. I then told her my catheter fell out even though I was being really careful with my movements. She looked in the bathroom floor and sure enough there laid the evidence. She looked back at me and her eyes were huge. I could see the “oh shit look” in her eyes. She was really sweet and started cleaning it up. I had started the clean up but then left it in case they needed to see something. She told me I could have dilated so she was going to check me. I went back to the bed and laid down as she finished up in the bathroom. She came over and checked me. Her eyes then got huge again. I asked her what is it? She said well you are definitely in labor. I was dilated 5 centimeters and 100% effaced…then it happened. She said I think your water just broke. Yes it did, it just broke. I also got the news the baby had passed a stool while in there. I then had to explain to my girls (who were listening to every word) it was ok just meant the doctor and nurses would have to be a bit more careful and the baby would have to be cleared up quickly so she wouldn’t inhale any of the tainted fluid. It was now a little after 10pm. My nurse went to call my Doctor.
At this time things went very quickly. My girls and my friend Jessica were burning up the cell phone lines calling everyone. I spoke to select people in between contractions. By this time they were definitely harder and coming fairly regularly. The nurse was telling my daughter Keri she felt like things were gearing up. I thought no kidding…now they take me seriously…LOL. My nurse kept checking me frequently at this point. I went from 5 to 7 centimeters within 20 minutes. Things get blurry for me after this all I remember was breathing during the contractions and trying to prepare for the next onset. They started coming pretty much one on top of the other. The nurse kept checking me due to the fact the contractions were coming so fast and strong. I was 8 going on 9 pretty fast then it felt like things hung up there for a little bit. The baby wasn’t descending into the birth canal yet. The nurse said sometimes the later ones seem to hang around up there till the last minute. I remember my doctor arriving sometime after I hit the 8 to 9 point. My other friend Johniece arrived. She and my oldest daughter were to stay in the room during delivery. My youngest decided she couldn’t take my being in pain and waited in the hall with my other friends. Things were moving so fast at this point. I told the nurse I felt like I really had to go to the bathroom. She checked me and sure enough the baby had started descending into the birth canal and I was fully dilated. My room was cleared for the birth. My friend Jessica told me later she had walked in the waiting area and found my Doctor and gave him the go get her “ok” LOL. My doctor is a personal friend as well so this probably contributed to the relaxed atmosphere I was allowed during my birth experience. Not to mention he is just a great doctor and that isn’t due to prejudice. I remember the nurse and my helpers (Keri & Johniece) giving me encouragement and helping me sit up and breathe. I talked the whole time .. I am just a verbal kind of person. I would tell them what I was feeling and most times the nurse or doctor would tell me what was taking place and offer encouragement. I kept letting go of my helpers’ hands to grip the rail. I was afraid I’d hurt them if I squeezed during the hard contractions. The feedback of what was happening and where things were helped me to focus on how close I was to being finished. I can assure you I thought about not pushing once or twice at the end. Then I thought how close I was to having her out and would reach deep down and push. I wanted to meet my baby. She was born at 11:47pm October 15th. She weighed 8lbs and 10ozs was 20 1/4 inches long. Head full of dark hair and grey blue eyes. She let her voice rip and let the whole world know she was here and not happy LOL. She doesn’t mind much but hates the cold and being cleaned up.
I was up walking around once the doctor and nurse were finished cleaning me up. I had her naturally so I recuperated very fast. I am so thankful that we both came through this healthy and no problems. God was watching over us and had us in his hand the entire time. We are both at home and doing well. I love her and am thankful to have been blessed so well. Good luck to all of you and I’ll keep you in my prayers as you soon go to meet your little bundles of joy.
