Happy Mother's Day!

pepper1376 - Saturday, 10 May
Hi, your baby has reflux too? My little Ava has had it since birth, comes up her nose and clogs her air ways. She's on an apnea monitor and she's going to see an ear, nose, throat specialist on Monday to see why she's still vomiting through her nose. It's an absolute nightmare! She's on zantac and it's helping alot. Hope the prevacid works! My 10 year old (Allie) also has GERD (and they tell me they grow out of it......yeah right!) and she does the prevacid when hers acts up. Have to mix it with applesauce...pain in the butt, but it works for her. I'm sure it'll work for your little one.

Were you able to breast feed? Ava vomited much more on breast milk, we tried the elimination thing and nothing worked. SO, we switched to formula and she does much better. I've been living with the guilt of it for 4 wks. now and have had some depression because of it. I bf my other 3 so I feel like I'm cheating her but she just throws it all up and the nose thing was much worse, she actually STOPPED breathing in the hospital several times--that's how she "earned" her apnea monitor, plus an extra day in the hospital and TONS of blood tests/scans and anything else they could think to check!. All was normal so they diagnosed her with reflux and thought the nose vomiting would go away. It didn't so she's headed to the specialist on Monday...

Any ways, hope your little one is doing better!

Thanks so much for your response to my bf issue. It is a little better, I think that she was in a growth spurt for the few days. She is a bit better now, though we still have issues. I think that the real problem is her reflux - and it sounds like your baby may have it too? I think that she is so uncomfortable, that she wants the breast for comfort. We have had her on axid, and did an ultrasound to check her pyloris - which came back normal. We tried Omeprezole, but it aggravated things, so we are back to the Axid. The pediatrician is now recommending an upper GI - I'm praying that things get better on their own... we have good days and bad days. As for the BFing, I'm trying to set aside what I think is truly paranoia about supply... as hard as that may be. Are you dealing with reflux in your baby as well?

girlwitstyle - Wednesday, 7 May
Good luck...is the Zantac not working? I heard that works well too....

girlwitstyle - Tuesday, 6 May
hi there....Riley is on Prevacid. It's completely cured his reflux along with the cereal. He hardy spits up, and doesn't seem to have the reflux anymore at night that used to bother him.
We put the cereal in the bottle. It's only a small amount and doesn't clog the nipple. 1 teaspoon per 2ox is what we use. He does fine on it.
Good luck! Change your doctor if you don't like them? I did that myself when he was 3 weeks old. I really disliked the first one....

littlecavalier - Tuesday, 6 May
Don't feel stupid at all! We should be able to trust doctors to not make stupid mistakes like that. You did what you thought was best for your baby. You're a great Mom, just need to find a great doctor now :-). Take care!!!

littlecavalier - Monday, 5 May
That is so frustrating! We have enough to worry about as new Mom's!! I totally agree about finding a new doctor. Were they at least appologetic about it when they told you what happened? I don't think they understand how stressful it is for us when they tell us that our babies don't weigh enough or weigh too much..

suzi - Monday, 5 May
maja is 6 weeks and on zantac cries and fusses all day and is on nutramigen and its still not helping. i have to walk her all day long im so sad and frustrated

littlecavalier - Sunday, 4 May
I'm a little late responding to the comment you made on your sons weight. My son was born at 7lbs 15oz and 21", at two months he was 12lbs 13oz and 24.25" which put him in the 75th percentile for weight. I would think that weight wise your little one is doing wonderfully!

Kikiea - Friday, 2 May
Oh! And about the being on his back... my son's doctor said that for the first half hour after he eats.. keep him elevated. Only burp him over your shoulder, because when they get all scrunched over that pushes the food back up and out... so keeping his body stretched out and elevated, helps keep the food down. After about a half hour it shouild be fine to lay him on his back.. if you are comfortable with that. And one thing I always did... my son only sleeps on his tummy. Of course I make sure that there are no big pillows/blankies/or other dangers near his face... but he is so much happier on his tummy.. I think it really helps the reflux. I ope that helps.. and good luck!! If you ahve more questions feel free to write back!!

Kikiea - Friday, 2 May
Hi! You are not alone in your thoughts of being a bad mommy... I have that thought all the time. For me it seems like one thing after another is wrong with him.. and it breaks my heart. But after talking to his doctor's I know that none of these things are caused by my actions.. just like your little ones problems are not caused by your actions... you are a great mommy!! That much is obvious just by how much you love your little one!! It's very hard... but I promise it gets easier....

caitlyn12284 - Friday, 2 May
Hey, don't beat yourself up!! just because he has gotten sick doesn't mean you are doing anything wrong. It's life and I always have to remind myself that it could be much worse. My son was in the hospital for a week the week after he was born and I felt the same way you do. But I am sure you are a wonderful mother and are taking the best care of him in his time of need.

jenakers - Friday, 2 May
You are doing a good job! Babies get sick. My son had a gunky eye for a month. Sometimes the tear duct gets clogged. Use a warm wet washcloth and hold it to his eye. Gently wipe after a several seconds. Take care he won't remember being sick when he is older! Jen

kikiea - Thursday, 1 May
Hi! My son has reflux too - he was diagnosed at about 8 weeks, but it started sooner. He sees a specialist, gastroenterologist, for it.. she said that most babies' reflux is worsened by a dairy intolerance, And, they also have a soy intolerance... so cutting out both is what she had me do... I was nursing and basically went on a vegan soy free diet... but I couldn't keep that up very long.. so she has my son on a prescription formula that is dairy AND soy free. Because he's been on prescription formula and medicines, I didn't start solids until about 3months... I tried spoon feeding him, but he couldn't do it yet, so I put it in his bottle. He's 5 months now, and gets a dinner and breakfast every day... He is still doing fabulously!

o0kathryn0o - Wednesday, 30 April
Your comment to Bri about being pretentious made me say....THANK GOD SOMEONE SAID IT! I get tired of reading her posts about everything her baby can do and how early he did it and she knows just about everything about everything. I've been wanting to say that forever. Pretentious is definately the right word!

gabbagirl - Wednesday, 30 April
I read your comment in the babyshower section. Thanks so much that was a great list :)

JenO - Wednesday, 30 April
No problem...my little guy has it so I had a thought that may be what it was. That is what we are here for right (thank goodness)!!

mtnwoman - Monday, 28 April
Hey, thanks for the ins. info. I have been on the phone ALOT, but not much happens, so I am def. going to try sending my appeal in writing. Anything helps! But I know that whatever happens, Riley was worth it!

Mum2-3 - Saturday, 26 April
Mirena is a physical barrier like an IUD as well as a locally acting inbuilt hormone such as the pill. But the hormone only acts locally on your uterus. Draw backs are on and off bleeding for the first 3 to 6 months and risks of pelvic inflam disease. Overall its a good choice compaired to other contraceptives. And you are likely to fall preggo straight away if you have it removed, cos once its out the physical barrier is gone and the hormone effects are very short lived!!!

dannie - Wednesday, 23 April
Oh you are not alone when it comes to not being able to breast feed. I have been watching Bringing Home Baby on tv and I was very surprised at the number of new moms who have difficulty Bfeeding and end up using formula. Knowing that I wasn't the only one struggling with that helped me get over it. As for feeding Ryland, he was eating 3-4 ounces per feeding every two hours or so. I tried to up it to 6, but he wouldn't finish because he would end up taking him 45 minutes to finish 4 ounces. I just switched bottles because I think the one I was using before took way too much effort to eat and had an extremely slow flow and Ryland would get tired of sucking for 45 minutes and end up with only 3-4 ounces. I wanted him to go longer between feedings and since switching bottles, he is now eating 6 ounces at a feeding and going longer before needing to eat again. I just started this a few days ago, so once again, his eating, along with his sleeping, has yet to really fall into a schedule.

P.S. Last week Ryland went through a phase where he would only eat 2 ounces every hour- sounds a lot like what you are dealing with right now.

dannie - Tuesday, 22 April
When I took Ryland for his 2 month check-up he weighed in at 11 lbs 2 ounces, which made him in the 50th percentile. However, he did only weigh 5 lbs 14 ounces at birth and was in the less than 10th percentile then, so he has done his job catching up! I am not sure how they correlate the weight, if it is dependent on birth weight or just by age.
I did start off trying to breastfeed, but when I was in the hospital it was Dr's orders that we supplement with formula to ensure Ryland gained weight. Since the bottle was the first thing introduced, I had a hell of a time getting my son to latch on. There were lots of tears, a ton of frustration and plenty of visits to the lactation consultant. I decided that instead of putting the two of us through all of that torture, I would just pump and feed the milk through a bottle and continue supplementing with formula. I did that up until Ryland was 2 months and then went strictly formula. Pumping was just too time consuming and inconvenient. I would have loved to Bfeed longer, but it just didn't work for me.
I was wondering how much your boy eats per day (in 24 hrs), how often and how much at a feeding?
I am in complete awe right now because Ryland is actually napping today. He took a few naps yesterday with no problem and it looks as if he may do it again today. I hope he is finally settling into a routine on his own! Today (12pm) I put him down once he had fallen asleep in my arms, but after 3 minutes he woke up. I figured I would let him be a bit since he wasn't really crying, just fussing. After about 10 minutes he started to cry, so I just went in, rocked his cradle and popped his binky back in his mouth(sometime he likes it, others times not) and he settled down and went back to sleep. It has now been just about an hour and he is still sleeping. I use to put Ryland down for naps in his bassinett, but recently I have started to try following the same protocal that we use at night; swaddle, turn the fan on for white noise, and put him in his cradle. I didn't know if putting him in the same spot to sleep every time might help. I guess I will see.

Also, you may want to read the posts on my profile from Debra. She is very knowledgeable and perhaps something she wrote to me may help you- Also, check out her page- Tons of great info there!

GLADEK - Tuesday, 22 April
First of all, I know it must be hard not to worry, but I would not worry about the pet dander.

As long as your child is not alergic, there have been many studies that show that children that grow up around animals actually have stronger immune systems as they grow. However, as a former vet tech, I bet there are things you can do to help your dog with his allergies/and the odor. Frequent bathing can make a dog with a skin condition worse sometimes, as oftentimes, the skin developes a yeasty-type infection that only gets worse with constant wetting.

A good vet should be able to help the problem with a specialized shampoo, maybe even some meds, and changing to a simple grain-free protein diet (Wellness Core, for instance) often cuts down signifigantly on allergies, dandruff, shedding, and smell. Good Luck!

dannie - Monday, 21 April
Hey there! I read your comment that you posted ago about your 8 week old not napping well. I have been having the same problem with my little boy, also 8 weeks. He sleeps well at night, but will go days without taking a daytime nap, and then have a day where he wants to sleep all day to catch up on lost sleep. I was wondering if you got any good information from anyone in regards to getting your baby to sleep better during the day. I know just how frustrating it is to have them fall asleep in your arms and the second you put them down, they are up again. Please let me know if you are having any success. Thank you and good luck!

Thanx for being supportive...I know I am not the only one who thinks the way I do but so many others...like some here and my fiancees parents think that you need to be rich to survive or be a good person or parent. Its just nice for others to come out and say I dont have to give her up. It makes me sad how people can just come out and say just give her up like she can be replaced later. They havnt been put in this position obviously. If it was their child than I bet theyd say differnt. Anyways...shell be here soon and Im getting exited...so is her dad. Ill kepp ya posted :)
