I live in Grand Rapids, MI and have been here since last May. I grew up on lake Michigan, then left for six years that I spent between Portland, OR and Seattle, WA. I met my husband out there, and we decided to relocate so we could be closer to our families and for more affordable housing. We have been very happy here, though I will say the winter is a little long and cold (though very pretty). We started trying to get pregnant in the fall, and it took only two months. We have not had any complications, and the pregnancy has gone along very textbook. Right now I am 16 1/2 weeks. I am not really showing that much yet, which I should probably be happy for - though I am longing for more of a baby belly :) I don't think I have felt the baby move yet either. My doctor said both of these things are very typical of a first pregnancy. We got to hear the heartbeat again last Friday which was a nice reassurance since I am not feeling very pregnant right now. We currently have two countdowns going.... On 2/19 we leave for a last little trip together before we become parents. We are going to FL and taking a short cruise to the Bahamas. I am SO ready for a warm break! Then on 3/7 we go in for our next ultrasound and we really want to know what we are having. I think it's a boy even though I would really love to find out it is a girl. Of course, in the long run having a healthy baby is what is most important!

3/2/08

We had a good time on our trip, but I woke up very sick on the day we flew back. Now I've been sick for a whole week, uch. But, I am in good spirits anyhow since our u/s is this Friday. I can hardly wait to find out what this lil monkey is!!!!!

3/8/08

We found out we are having a girl yesterday!!! I was in shock and so happy - I had convinced myself this was a boy in here... Of course I went straight to the store and bought two little dresses :) I am so excited! I need to work a little more on names now so I can repost a baby name voting list..... Another fun detail is that my baby girl is going to be a Leo just like mommy!!! That means lots of fun, but lots of fire!!! Oh yah, and I finally felt my baby girl move the night before our u/s. Now I am feeling movement here and there - though it still feels pretty light. The placenta is currently in the front of my uterus, and I guess that can block the movement a little.... It's actually covering part of my cervix right now too - so I have to go back in for another u/s in 8 weeks to make sure it has moved up. Otherwise the baby would have to come by scheduled c-section. I have mixed feelings on that. But odds are, the placenta will move and nature will take its course :)

4/16/08

I am so excited - I am taking one last pre-baby trip and leave early on Friday morning. I am going back to Seattle for a few days. I haven't been back since we relocated from there to Michigan. Work has been so incredibly stressful and so I can hardly wait for a few days of no work and all play! I just know that time is going to fly after I get back. We are going to start work on the nursery, and I'll be plugging away in the third trimester!

5/5/08

Well, the trip to Seattle went really well. It was brief and we had a ton of people to see! I do really miss that city - but with spring finally here in Michigan it is getting so nice here... There are pros and cons to both locations :) Once again I came home with a really nasty cold. My doctor finally gave me a five day antibiotic so I am almost done with that. The congestion has been a real pain on top of losing breath capacity anyhow! We had another ultrasound last Friday at 28 weeks which was fantastic. We got to see little Madeline June moving around. The placenta has moved out of the way which is the biggest thing they needed to check - so we can progess with doing a vaginal birth (I think that's good)!

Thanks for your comment. I have 3 weeks vacation and sick time I can use, then my short term disability would kick in. My STD is 67% of my pay, which is better than going down to 20 hrs a week and only bringing home 50% of my usual pay! lol I'm seriously considering asking my dr to just put me off work.

Thank you for your comment about the Graco stroller! It is such a difficult decision to make because you know that whatever you choose, you will likely have for years! (You would hope anyway!) I have heard that the Graco carseats have excellent safety ratings, and that it is a smooth ride in town - my biggest wonder was whether it would work well off road, on trails and gravel? It has been hard to find information about that! By the way, I love your name choice... Madeline June is very pretty!

PRETTIEST MOM
Once you have been hit, you have to hit 5 pretty Moms.
If you get hit again, You will know you are REALLY pretty!
So hit 15 pretty moms on your friends list to let them know they are
pretty!
Before I was a Mom
I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom - I had never been puked on.
Pooped on. Chewed on. Peed on.
I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts.
I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom
I never held down a screaming child so doctors could do tests.
Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put her
down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop
the hurt.
I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom -
I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body.
I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.
I didn't know that bond between a mother and her child.
I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important
and happy.
Before I was a Mom -
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to
make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the
wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much, before I was a Mom.
Send this to someone who you think is a special Mom.''

Oooh la la...lucky you and I like your tactics...a few bevy's seems to be the trick...I will give it a go. Good work.

mjeans - Friday, 16 May
I'm so in need of a foot rub right now...I'm on my last business trip before I have this baby and I just want to go home...tomorrow I get to thank goodness! but my feet are so swollen :( I hear you on the pedicures...I'm definately heading for one of those soon!

MommyWonder - Wednesday, 14 May
I was having severe issues with swelling a couple of weeks ago. I noticed that staying on my feet, even walking made it worse. I am now taking the time to prop my feet up at least 1 hr. per day and that keeps everything looking as normal as possible. I've found that working out isn't so bad as long as you relax for a while afterward.

mjeans - Wednesday, 14 May
Good suggestion about 'upping' the protein and I like the wrapping of the cankles...maybe I can 'convince' my husband that rubbing my feet really does ease the swelling...lol, somehow I'm not sure if that'll work.

ladybug403 - Tuesday, 13 May
Hi,
I am seriously swollen, as well. It started way back in week 20! The only thing that seems to help is laying down and drinking a ton of water. I also wear support socks meant for diabetics (my sister snagged them from the hospital she works at) so I know they are a good quality. These definitely make a difference. While the swelling doesn't go completely away, it def. goes down noticeably. The trick is finding a way to make them look fashionable with capris or a skirt... Hope you are feeling better soon--we are almost there!

MelisaK - Tuesday, 13 May
Well, I really don't know how much water I drink. I drink water or 100% fruit juice. Simply Orange orange juice has no sodium. The dr. told me nothing in a can, bag or box. I had been eating a cheeseburger with xtra pickles and fries everyday (craving) so I cut those out to. Now that I have my swelling under control I allow myself one every now and then. The baby needs sodium so don't completely cut it out...just all the junk.

mjeans - Tuesday, 13 May
I read your message about your swelling...I too have the same issues and as we speak my feet are elevated as my 'cankles' (calf to ankles with looks more like logs than legs)...I know it sounds weird, but I wear maternity pantyhose as much as possible...especially the ones that have a lot of lycra as they promote circulation (similar to what diabetics wear)...I have found when I wear them my 'cankles' aren't as bad. I also find drinking copius amounts of water is a big help and I figure now that I am going pee frequently, at least I'm peeing more than teaspoon so I feel my 'trip to the bathroom' is worth while. Good luck and let me know if you find anything else that works for you!

carolynjh - Tuesday, 13 May
I feel for you! Resting helps the most, the more you can be relaxed and still with your feet up is the best. Also, I had read in a previous post that it's not so much the sodium that will make you swell (you still need sodium in your diet) but a lack of protein that also can trigger the swelling. Walking helps if you are only a little swollen and if you can relax afterwards, but when it gets really bad, the best things you can do are resting, hydrating, and swimming in nice cool water. No pressure on anything!

langiel - Tuesday, 13 May
When I had problems with ankle swelling I would lay on my left side(increase blood flow) and ice my ankles/feet with cold packs. I would even place ace wraps in the freezer and wrap my feet snuggly with them. It helped decrease the swelling for me. I hope this helps!
