read it ... now.

I am a 24 year old elementary school teacher from New York City. My husband and I have been together for 7.7 years, married for 3.2 years, and are expecting our first child on August 18, 2008 after over a year of trying!

It has already been a roller coaster ride for us. I spotted twice in my first trimester, and found out I have an increased risk (1 in 85 or 1%) of having a child with Trisomy 18. Normally, the odds are about 0.02%. We are counting on detailed ultrasounds, not amnio, to help us see that our child is just fine. We are going with the our-child-is-99%-healthy attitude first!

Check out my journal below (far below) for updates and to read about our journey with our first pregnancy!

Labor Prediction Quiz

Just about the time you think you can't handle hearing one more "when is that baby going to pop?", your baby will decide to make it's appearance. We predict your baby will be born 3-7 days before its due date. Your baby will most likely be born in the morning. Justmommies predicts that your baby will weigh approximately 8.0 pounds and that your labor will be about 15 hours long.

Pregnancy survey

About you

Pre-Pregnancy Weight: 130

About the Father

Name: J.L.
Age: 26
Height: 5'10

About the Pregnancy

Is this your first pregnancy?: Yes
When did you find out you were pregnant?: December 14, 2007, on our 7th-year-together anniversary
Was it planned?: Yes, we got it right on the 11th month of trying!
What was your first reaction?: Disbelief; I cried and cried!
Who was with you when you found out?: No one; I was in a bathroom stall at my job.
Who was the first person you told?: My husband!
How did your parents react?: Super excited! His mom cried!
What was your first symptom?: Cramps but no period ... I have horrid cramps and menstrual cycles, so cramps w/o a period is something to be very suspicious of considering my track record, so maybe it was implantation cramping.
What is your due date?: August 18, 2008
Do you know the sex of the baby?: Yes
If so, what is it?:It's a GIRL!!
Have you picked out names?: Yes.
If so, what are they?: Won't tell! But her nickname is Lia.
How much weight have you gained?: about 43 lbs and I'm 36 weeks pregnant.
Do you have stretch marks?: Nope! :o)
Have you felt the baby move?: Yes!
Have you heard the heartbeat?: Yes!

Birth

Home or hospital birth?: Home birth!
Natural or medicated birth?: Natural.
Who will be in the delivery room with you?: A doula, midwife and my husband, my mom and mother-in-law.
Will you breastfeed?: Yes!
Do you think you'll need a c-section?: Not at this point.
Will you cry when you hold the baby for the first time?: I think so!
What's the first thing you might say to him/her?: My sweetie!
Would you let someone videotape the birth?: I'd love that, but my husband may be weirded out by it. Haha.
Are you excited about the birth, or scared?: I feel calm and excited and happy; I trust my body and am looking forward to experiencing childbirth. But I must admit that I'm anxious about it all, too!

JOURNAL

just for fun: gender prediction!

babzone quiz: it could be a BOY!
my birthdate + baby's conception month: it could be a GIRL!
chinese calendar (my age at conception + month of conception): it could be a BOY!
old wives tale: it could be a GIRL!

so, it's a tie so far ... one more predictor to break the tie ....

heartbeat = above 140 bpm: it could be a GIRL!

THE VERDICT? IT'S A GIRL!!!!!!

Doing well. Have some days where I worry this being my first pregnancy and all. Yesterday I was worried because I didn't feel the baby move all day. I called an after hours obstetrician number and a friend and they both suggested drinking a tall glass of juice and lie down then wait to see what happens. Sure enough, after I drank a glass of juice about 15 minutes later she was moving around. I probably woke her up! I was very much relieved and she's been moving around ever since. How is your pregnancy going?

I do a little bit of everything, lol! I have a lot to do with insurance for our projects (they build watertreatment plants) and preparing qualification packages for bidding new jobs, and a lot of administrative work. Not too terribly exciting! That would be awesome for you to get a little extra time in without having to start your leave when the baby is born! Wow! I should have become a teacher, lol! Congrats on your first baby - it's our first too!

I hope your baby comes earlier too! The more time, the better, of course. I am an assistant in an engineering firm, but they don't offer any pay while off. I will be taking 8 weeks, no pay :( We're trying to save some money to make up for the difference while my income is on pause! It's so difficult seeing the others that get a year off (Canada) and those who don't have to go back to work at all! Wish that was me! I wouldn't mind a year of pay from the government, lol!
