Hi - my name is Hanukkah and I am having a baby in July 2008. This is my second pregnancy but will be my first child if all goes well. My first pregnancy was ectopic. I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks with this pregnancy and confirmed the baby is growing in the womb!

I'm planning a home birth and am very excited to give birth in the comfort of my own home without any machines and/or drugs involved. I have 2 highly qualified midwives that will be assisting me with prenatal care, the birth and postnatal care. I am sure it will be a wonderful experience. I'm also interested in hearing about anyone else who is planning a home birth or who is planning a natural birth.

Things are much different here in the states. Doctors are the status quo, and midwives are hard to find, and as my page states, in Alabama it is illegal for midwives to deliver babies. That's funny because 70 years ago midwives were the standard. I am highly impressed with my midwife. She is totally competent, and she knows her limitations and abilities. She knows that there are some times when a hospital will be more appropriate, and she will send a mother. However, the need for a physician or medical equipment is rare. I am very excited about having a home birth. In fact, one of the things I like about it but haven't given much thought to is that not many people do that anymore. It's unique in our era. Take care, and let me know how your birth goes.

Hi! I read your comment on the home birth forum page and just wanted to stop by and say hi! I am planning having the baby at a birth center as we will kinda be 'in between' homes when baby comes, and it is amazing how much flack I am getting for it. It was encouraging reading that forum and seeing how many women support it! I hope all continues to go well for you! I'm due July 22, 2008, so right near you. God bless! :)

Homebirths ARE safer and MORE relaxing than hospital births. My midwife lives 3 hours away from me. I would rather drive 3 peaceful hours than sit in a local doctor's office for the same amount of time and get very little from the appointment. Midwives educate women and their partners about birth far, far more than doctors. I went to a doctor at first, and he never mentioned nutrition, exercise, or anything such as that. He did mention, however, costs and tests they would like to run and would be running. That's about sums up our visit except for the ultrasound and papsmear. I sat in the papsmear office for over 30 minutes naked, wondering when he would be back to examine me. I decided that if he didn't come back at x time, I would put my clothes on and leave. He made it about one minute before his time was up. Just the offices visits with doctors are tense and nerve-wracking. I do not know why some women are so strongly against homebirths.
My mother gave me the third degree and criticized me and screamed and ranted, etc. No one else has (to my face) said anything negative about it, though. Best wishes for you and yours.

I like your name. How was it chosen for you?

Hey, about your comment on the baby-shower forum, do what others do when they register...try to find a store that carries a lot of the products that you want to use & have this on your shower invitation. It is the nicest way to say 'this si what I want for my baby' & just understand that you will still get some of the other stuff you don't want. In that case, give it to a woman's shelter or to a friend who is ok with teh 'funky lotions' (or whatever it is you won't use). Just a thought, hope it helps.

I have always had a midwife during my homebirths. I don't think it is very prudent to stay at home on purpose and not have a midwife or at the very least, someone to help, don't you? Imagine if the mother or baby is having problems, how would one attend to both? And actually, the midwife who was with me for my second and third births always has an assistant for the same reason. The midwife I am using now does the same thing and I really appreciate it. If she didn't have a birth assistant, I may even consider getting a doula. My husband has always been the only person with me, other than the midwives. I love it - it's such a personal and spiritual experience. I'm sure your mom and sisters appreciate you sharing that with them!

I'm so encouraged to read your comment on the homebirth page. It is great to see women who are educated and prepared for birth. I was neither during my first birth - I just did whatever was asked of me in the hospital - but my second, third and now my final and fourth baby were/are going to be birthed at home. I love having a home birth. I see it as luxurious!! I get to call all the shots and people come to ME, not the other way around. We're due just 5 days apart!! I wonder who will have thier baby first? My pregnancies just get consecutively later and later. My last was 12 days overdue and I ended up taking castor oil. It wasn't terrible, but I would certainly like to avoid that again if at all possible. Anyway, I hope you have a great pregnancy and birth! God bless you!!

I am planning a home birth too. This is my first pregnancy and am at 30 weeks. I am thinking about hypnobirthing, have you thought about alternative pain relief?

How exciting to have a home birth! I wish I could be brave enough to even try, but I am such a wimp that I need as many drugs as possible!! Don't let other people get you down or influence your decisions. When I was pregnant with my 2nd child my doctor told me to have a c section like I did with my first child, but my friend kept telling me to have the baby natural like a 'real' woman. So I stupidly listened to my friend and I was so sorry for it. I ruined my entire pelvic floor. This time I am in control and will have a c section. You need to do what your heart tells you to do. I am sure you have research all your options and have made and educated decision on your birthing plan. Go for it!!

How are you? Thanks for your note. I'm still having crazy dreams. The other night I was eating licorice, mmmm. I'm not having an ultrasound unless there is a medical need to do so. Since I don't want to know the sex, and I'm keeping the baby regardless of any birth defects, I don't see the need for the ultrasound. I also just feel personally that there is no need to expose my unborn child to that level of radiation if it isn't necessary. What did you decide?

wildberry - Tuesday, 5 Feb
i loved my first home birth! it was just such a wonderful experience there's nothing like being able to stay in your own home and your bed it's just wonderful do you like your midwife?
