Hi everyone, my name is Helly, and I'm a Naturopath, who is preggie with my first child! Although my husband sometimes calls me a "darn hippy", (hee hee) he agrees with me that as a low risk candidate, home birthing is the best alternative! I mean, if I'm sick, I'll go to the hospital, but otherwise, I'd rather be at home! I've been lucky enough to find a midwife who is willing to assist (in my small town - no mean feat) who recently helped my best friend give birth.

I plan to be a sling-wearing, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, cloth nappy using, au'naturel mother!

_________________________________________________________

Your Name: Helen (or just Helly!)
Age: 27
Height: Um, in cm? 165cm.
Pre-pregnancy weight: No idea - don't own scales!

Partners Name: Tim
Age: 31
Height: Y'know - I'm not sure! I fit under his chin nicely. :)
Are you still together: A-yup!

Is this your first pregnancy: First
When did you find out you were pregnant: Um, what day did I join this site? Mid January. 15th, I think.
Was it planned: For sure
What was your first reaction: Disbelieving, actually. I hadn't thought we were in with a snowflakes chance that month.
Who was with you when you found out: I was home alone - took the test as a joke, because I was bored!
Who was the first person you told: My hubby - I waited about 20 seconds before I called him... lol
How did your parents react: Absolutely stoked - I sent them a bunch of flowers with a little card from "their grandchild," saying, I can't wait to meet you!
How far along are you: 17 weeks
What was your first symptom: Sore BB's, from the day I O'd, which I why I thought there was no way.
What is your due date: September 26 (approx, of course) I hope it's a Libran, we've already got a bunch of Virgo's in the fam!
Do you know the sex of the baby: Nope! And don't plan to find out.
If so, what is it:
Have you picked out names: I have a few, we haven't gone into earnest name picking yet.
If so, what are they: I like Una for a girl, and Eamon for a boy
How much weight have you gained: No idea!
Do you have stretch marks: No, at hopefully not if I can combat it!
Have you felt the baby move: In the last week - in fact, as I started writing this, I'm sure I felt it again!
Have you heard the heartbeat: Nope, but I know my baby is fine!

Will you keep the baby: Ha ha - depends! (J/K!!!) Absolutely.
Home or hospital birth: Hoooome - yay! I'm excited
Natural or medicated birth: All natural, baby.
Who will be in the delivery room with you: My MW Sandy, my mum, and my hubby (if he chooses to be there - I've let him know he can leave at any time and I won't be offended. I dont want to force him to stay. He reckons he'll be ok though!)
Will you breastfeed: There is no other way. *wink*
Do you think you'll need a c-section: I don't believe so - technically, only 3-5% of women in Australia genuinely need a C-section, (although the rate of actual c-sections performed currently hovers around 40%, MUCH higher than it should be), I am not in a high risk group.
Will you cry when you hold the baby for the first time: Knowing me, Weepy McWeepypants, probably!!!
What's the first thing you might say to him/her: Probably too busy weeping! lol
Would you let someone videotape the birth: LOL... if they really want to, I'm not phased. I can't promise I'll always stay in the cameras view!
Are you excited about the birth, or scared: I don't mind being excited, and a little bit of fear is natural, but the more we educate ourselves, the less we have to be frightened of!

April 18, 2008 - So, it's taken me a whole 17 weeks to actually put anything on here! Starting to feel kicks now, and I've had to abandon sleeping on my tummy (sob!) People who saw me last week are surprised that I seem to have suddenly popped out! I look big from up above, but when I check the mirror, it's not really that dramatic. We went out for dinner last night, and I grabbed one of my belly bands, unbuttoned the top two buttons of my jeans, and put that over the top! Lol, I think I'm gonna have to abandon the regular jeans soon. They're fine as long as I don't sit down for ages or eat! Good thing about hipsters though, they last longer than high-waisted! Anyhoo, time to get ready for work - my thoughtful bosses have provided a stool for me to sit on, so my legs don't ache anymore! Yay!

_________________________________________________________

May 6th, 2008 - Creeping up towards the half way point already! Had another visit from my midwife last night - she's very pleased with how things are progressing! My uterus is just below my bellybutton at the moment, and I'm getting kicked daily! Things are looking on track for now. Feeling really good, have been keeping up my vitamins as much as possible, and moderate excercise. I think the reason I never add things to this journal is because there isn't much happening! Just my body doing its thing making a baby!

___________________________________________________________

May 22 , 2008 - passed half way and onto 22 weeks tomorrow! This little one has been kicking like a champion! Tim can feel some of the kicks now (the ones that make me go "oof!") which is exciting for him. I've done some sewing lately and made myself a maternity dress for the winter, which I've made sure is useable as a nursing dress for next year as well. Still feeling great - when I walk for a while I get a little bit of an ache in one side, like there are ligaments still stretching a little, but it goes after about 10 minutes. Other than that, feelin' fine!

I had a bit of a disagreement with the doctor who is overseeing everything, he insisted that I have at least one ultrasound to see what's going on, and I didn't see why I had to have one at all. After all, it's entirely my choice! Nonetheless, I crumbled and agreed to one only, which was today. It took forever and the girl did a billion measurements, but it's OVER now and that's the last of them! I mean, if things are going well, I won't even have to see the doctor - he's only in place if something goes wrong and I have to go to hospital. So onwards to the next milestone!

oh i understand about the unknown effect of ultrasounds. but i have had 4 ultrasound! all of them were for medical reasons though! first one was for checking the due date, the next two were for the unexplained bleeding i had, and the last one was at 20 weeks to make sure everthing looked okay with our little one. and i know that they are not alway 100% accurate-but it is sure nice to know that your baby and your placenta look and seem to be healthy and growing properly!

Hey there! Yeah, it's kinda weird how fast the weeks go, and yet September still seems like forever away.

I actually bought myself a sewing machine, but still getting the hang of it. I used to do a lot of sewing, but this new machine is very different to use. So far I've just done little projects like adding some lace to bouncer covers and satin ribbon to dresses. Might get more adventurous as I get used to the machine. I also have some embroidery projects - I wanna put Penny's name on some things and maybe just decorate more of her clothes with little flowers or butterflies. A tiny detail of embroidery can make a fairly plain top or dress into something quite special. I have a sling already. I think the only thing I need for the baby now is a baby bath tub.

All your sewing projects sound great! Making stuff for Baby is so much more fun than just buying it, hey!

The rest of this lot are doing well. Last day of school holidays today, and I think the girls are ready to go back to school. They're starting to get bored. Not the boys, though! They'd stay on holidays forever! Jason's birthday was last Friday (17th), and he got a video game that he and Charlie and Tycho have all been really enjoying. The girls would rather play outside with the dog, which is lovely.

So far we've avoided all the colds and 'flu that often come with Winter, and the weather even seems to be warming up again already, so we might be past the worst of Winter. Gotta love north Queensland!!

i definatly respect that you would rather not have an ultrasound to see if anything was wrong with you baby, i mean, women have been having babies for hundreds of years without ultrasounds! but i am very happy you did get one done, just to make sure. my finace and couldn't wait to see the utlrasound, but we did chose not to find out if the baby would have any illnesses such as downs or spina bifia, we figured, as long as everything looked good on the ultrasound, we weren't worried. we still are going to love our baby no matter what!

good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!
renee

Hey there! How've you been? Love the photos!

I enjoyed the ultrasound scan, because it's nice to actually see the little one, and I was very interested to know the sex, but it is unnecessary. Probably as well to have one, to rule out severe abnormalities, but we certainly don't need as many as some of these ladies seem to opt for!

Exciting to be at 24 weeks now! The time seems to be going fast and yet dragging at the same time... I feel well, but do get a backache when I'm on my feet for too long. Still enjoy cycling to town almost every day, and really only have minor complaints. Little one is certainly making her presence known with all the movements and kicking. That's nice, hey!

Well, hope you're having a great day!

Yeah, Speesees is a great store! And I am not a pink/blue person at all! I love unisex or just other colors for baby. Glad you liked it. =)

Very easy to find a midwife, Over here pretty much everyone uses midwifes and it's just the standard thing you do when you're preggers, go to the midwifery and find one you like. Yeah I think they are treated pretty well, My sister in law is a midwife and she is looked after. Very very busy though

blessed-in-atl - Saturday, 24 May
Your welcome. I had been looking for it for awhile as well!

Hi There! Yes we to are going to have a home birth! Had our other two in hopspital without meds for our son born 12 yrs ago and sent home same day! So thought why bother going in at all this time? Breastfeed our daughter and son and co slept with both, so see no probs with doing it all again! Less sleepless nights and a much more contented baby. Going to use the sling too this time, which we didnt do with the others. Hubby is ok with home birthing, was little unsure at first but with midwifes approval and hospital agreed if any probs arise he feels much better. Having an easy pregnacy with nothing really going on either. Have decided not to find out what we are having until the big day!! Take care and keep in touch! xx

cool, my boyfriend isnt too keen on the idea. he has a son who is nearly 10 (he was 17 when he was born) and he makes refrences to back then, i have to keep reminding him things have changed since then and that there are no rules. its our baby so we can do what we want. iv asked him to read the info about co-sleeping and he is still sat on the fence. are u gonna have baby in bed with u??? iv just got a three sided cot that u can alter the height of so he gonna right next to me but in his own space, this will ease my boyfriends mind cause he was worried about him getting squeezed!!! are u worried about breast feeding??? iv got my heart set on doing it but keep dreaming that i cant! :)

Kaylaaa - Thursday, 22 May
Hey I am planning on having a (drugfree) homebirth. It is my first. I love the idea of being able to put baby in his own bed after he is born, and to crawl into my own bed when it is all over, rather than be in a hospital. I don't view birth as a medical event unless it has medical complications. I think there's a reason we "nest" at home!!

judi - Tuesday, 20 May
Yeah, I like Irish names; my hubby is Patrick. We very nearly named Tycho "Daniel" - it's his middle name now. But I don't much like "Colleen" or "Kate". You're right about "Penny" too - it hasn't been popular since the 50's apparently, and that's a good thing. When we named Jess Jessica I had no idea it was the top name of 1997, or we'd never have gone with it! But happy we did, I guess. It suits her.

judi - Tuesday, 20 May
I sorta figured you might know the song, but I agree that's not necessarily a bad thing. Problem could be that having that song go through my head every day for the rest of my life will drive me insane! :)

judi - Monday, 19 May
My husband has decided he wants to call this little girl "Penny". Our last name is "Lane" and he loves the Beatles. He reckons no-one under 40 years old will make the connection to the song. What do you think?

judi - Monday, 12 May
Yeah, we live in a very small town. Don't even rate a McDonalds or any of those chain stores, so I do a lot of shopping on eBay. There is a clinic here, and they will deliver babies if they have to, but like us to go to Cairns, which is where I went for the scan (uggh!) Guess it would be good to be in a big hospital where they have facilities - neonatal intensive care etc, heaven forbid we should need it. But I'd be all alone there. We don't have a car, so would have to travel by bus or ambulance, and my husband would have to stay here with the other kids. Doesn't sound fun. But anyway, long time before we have to worry about that. In the meantime, I'm enjoying Baby's kicks and squirms, and TRYING to think of an appropriate name. I like "Callista" and "Sitara" and "Crystal" but nothing really strikes me as, you know, yes, that's definitely the name for our little one. My other girls are "Jessica Jasmine Amber" and "Rebecca Amethyst Butterfly". Those names came easy. This one is a puzzle..

judi - Friday, 9 May
G'day, Helly! Thanks for the message - I am SO HAPPY!! I kept telling myself I didn't mind if Baby is a boy or girl, but in my heart I really wanted a girl, and I know the other kids were leaning that way, as well, so I'm really thrilled. Hubby says, "but boys are so much easier" - yeah, and we have a baby because it's easy, huh??? Really, he's happy too. We have 3 boys and two girls, so this will even up the count : )

We had to travel nearly two hours by bus to have the scan done, and I get travel sick, so Wednesday was not a good day. The ginger helped me get there okay, but I was so sick coming home. Uggh. But the scan showed that everything is normal, which is a huge relief. At my age, there's a much greater risk of problems. Anyway, now we can start thinking "names"!! And I'm dying all her baby stuff pink or lavender (I had been buying "gender neutral" colours).
How are you going? I know what you mean about not much happening... Things seem to be settling into a day to day routine, and my body doesn't seem to be changing that much from one week to the next. All good, though!
