March 29, 2008
It's Saturday night and I am still in shock. I found out Tuesday that I am pregnant with my second child. I am currently six weeks. Last week I thought I was pregnant and took a pregnancy test that came out negative. However, a week later I still had not gotten TOM (time of month) and was having some of the same feelings (mainly tiredness at 3:30 PM - lol). So on Monday I took not one but TWO home pregnancy tests to make sure and Tuesday I went and visited my Dr. to confirm it.
I am a Type II Diabetic and have been for 14 years. I have struggled with being overweight my whole life. I have a unique syndrome called HAIR-AN Syndrome which is similar to PCOS but has some different symptoms. I have been told just about my whole adult life that I would have difficulty conceiving without fertility drugs and even then it would be difficult. Well--God proved the doctors wrong. My first daughter was conceived 8 months after I was married while I was on the birth control pill! We had been thinking that it was time to start really trying but "little peanut" is already here.
My first pregnancy was great for the most part. I was able to control my blood sugars the first 24 weeks with diet, exercise and oral medications. The rest of the pregnancy I controlled with insulin, diet and some exercise. Because of the diabetes and risk they decided to induce me early -- I was due January 7 but they did an amnio on me on December 17 and found that her lungs were developed so they had me come in that evening to begin the inducing. I received Cytotek Monday evening and then was allowed to go to sleep. On Tuesday morning at about 7 AM they began me on the Pitocin. I had mild contractions all day but never dialated past a 4. They tried the same thing on Wednesday. Still nothing. On Thursday they gave me 4 doss of Cytotek throughout the day. Still nothing...so on Friday morning they decided to do a C-section. Rebekah was born at 1:22 PM and was super healthy. I was so happy to finally be able to hold her.
Since I had such a hard time with my last attempt at delivery they have already scheduled my C-section for Novermber 7. I will go in on the 6th to do my Amnio and then if lungs are good this baby will be born on November 7th.
I was hoping that this pregnancy I could do the same and stay on oral meds the first 24. However, I have a feeling that I will be on insulin after seeing my diabetes nurse on Tuesday. My sugars have been high (150 - 220) with eating minimal carbs. As a result my ketones are too high since I am not eating enough and I am losing weight. BUT it will all be worth it in the end. I will do what is best for the baby. Only 222 days to go! I can do it! :)
I would love to meet and talk with other moms who are around the same time frame as me as well as other diabetic moms. However, I'm not fussy and would love to meet a variety of people from here and hear all the different stories.
