Hi! I'm 42, and feel a little old to be pregnant again. I already have 5 beautiful kids, but very excited about the new addition on the way.

March 7th: Dating scan at Mossman hospital: 10 weeks and 2 days

March 25th: Ultra-sound scan in Cairns: 13 weeks; 7.24cm, maybe 13 wk + 3 days

May 7th: second ultra-sound scan in Cairns. 19 weeks. The technician says Baby is a girl! and the scan showed that she's healthy and developing well. No problems they could see. It's such a relief! And although I was telling myself I didn't mind what gender Baby is, I'm SO HAPPY she's a little girl! So are the other children. :) Also relieved that all development appears to be normal, as they say the risks of problems are so high for a mother my age.

May 19th: Still going well. Some days I feel like September may never come; other times the days and weeks just disappear. We're thinking of naming our little angel "Penny".

June 6th: Passed the 23 week mark, at last - it's finally June... Nice to know little Penny is basically a viable baby now, and she sure is strong. She also seems able to kick simultaneously in my stomach and bladder and kidneys - guess she's getting big! Sometimes seems to be trying to break out through by belly. I'm enjoying getting little baby clothes together and wraps etc. Be lovely when she's finally born! But in the meantime, the days are clicking by steadily. I'm fairly comfortable, all things considered. Had one scary dizzy spell a week or so back, and the varicose veins and calf cramps and backaches are a nuisance, but I get occasional bursts of energy and clean the house or do some gardening. Still enjoy riding my bicycle into town almost every day.

July 10th:
Into the third trimester! Baby seems more and more real and I just love all her kicks and squirms. So far still not too uncomfortable, and I'm feeling fit and well, but the bike rides are getting more difficult! I had my glucose challenge test for gestational diabetes this week and it was fine (I scored 6.0 mmol/l and the cutoff is 7.8 - that corresponds to scoring 107mg/dl with a cut-off of 135 to 140); he also did a full blood count and everything (iron levels etc) is good.

July 31st (week 31): Backaches and leg cramps are tiresome, and the dizzy turns mean I can no longer ride the bike every day, or even go out unnecessarily on my own (doc says it might be low blood pressure or low blood sugar or anemia). Most of the time I feel healthy and strong, though. It's so exciting to be in the final stretch!

August 4th: Midwife & Dr appointments at Cairns Base Hospital. They took 3 vials of blood to check for what might be causing the bruising on my legs and a urine sample to check for a couple of things Dr Guirguis hadn't done. Also gave me lots of info about VBACs and what to take to hospital, besides an ambulance! Both the midwife and doctor seem a lot more genuinely concerned about my risks that Dr G. which is actually reassuring. I do hope to give birth under their care, even tho it means being on my own for the birth and probably until discharge.

August 8th: Dr G and I discussed VBAC vs another c-section, and he says it's up to me, but his judgment (just barely) comes down on the side of c-section, because of the slightly increased risks with a VBAC and the decreased risks of a c-section after having had surgery before. The op would mean more medical control, and we'd have a date, so we'd know when to be in Cairns - Pat and the kids might even be able to come. Also we wouldn't be rushing to Cairns in labor, risking giving birth en route. Recovery would be a few days vs a few hours, but that's okay. Seems to depend mostly on whether Baby decides to come uninvited before we can get a c-section organized.

August 20th: Doctor G. says she's cephalic, everything seems good. :) Started taking iron as dizziness could be because of slightly low heamoglobin level.

September 3rd: (36 weeks) Dr G. says she's turned breech. Gonna look into that c-section Monday.

September 5th: Glucose Tolerance Test was okay; it seemed unnecessary but came back positive. Now what? I already eat like a health nut and exercise heaps.

September 8th: Cairns ObGyn said I should try for a vag. delivery, as Baby is cephalic *whew* and he thinks it would be quite safe. He also said her head is "well down" so she's very unlikely to turn breech again. If I'm still pregnant in 3 weeks, we will talk c-sec.

September 13th: Got my blood glucose monitor and strips all sorted, and can keep an eye on my blood sugar levels. So far, so good - no readings over 7.4 mmol/l. Other ladies on here seems to be having their little babies, one by one, but Penny seems quite content to stay where she is!

September 16th: Had abdominal pains and eventually went to the hospital. I thought it may be heartburn or gas pains, as it was sort of a burning sensation, but down near my bellybutton. The midwife wondered if it might be bleeding from the placenta, as that's where it was apparently positioned. They transferred me to Cairns for a scan and for observation, but I went into labor on the way. The ambulance driver, Miles, told me all about how he got dreadlocks in his blonde hair. Got to Cairns still only 2cm dilated and not effaced. Given a drip at dinner time, as my glucose level was very low by now, having had nothing to eat since toast and an orange at 10am. Not fish and chips, but got my BGL back up. I was still picking superglue off my fingers from fixing Tycho's toy shield, and watching "three and a half Men" when they came to tell me there was an opening in theatre, and took me in for c-sec at about 9:30pm. Penny born at 10:36pm. As she was born, they lifted her above the screen so I could see her, but I really only got to see her "girl bits" (that was in itself a relief) and they took her to check and clean her off. The spinal block was awful, affected my heart and had to get narcotic injection which made my mouth dry and head itchy, and was having trouble breathing by the time they stitched me up. I was shaking like I was freezing cold.

September 17th: Recovery took over an hour, but good now and feeding. Her blood glucose was low at first testing, so they gave her 20ml formula, but BGL came good and she has taken to breastfeeding well. She's lovely!!

September 18th: Transferred back to Mossman this afternoon, where Pat and the kids finally came and met little Penny. Doctor was busy dealing with patients from a minibus accident where the bus had hit a horse, but finally we saw the doctor, and she discharged us. Home by taxi (Colleen), with only panadol for pain. Very very happy to be home with Penny and pleased to have shared this wonderful journey with all the ladies here on this site.

Hi, I copied your hospital bag stuff. Thanks.

I LOVE your names... I really like Kallista. I have always liked that name.

Thank you! The kids had fun painting pictures this afternoon. I will have to take pics of those and add them as well. I haven't exactly helped Jack (2 yr old) do his yet, the others painted while he was napping. I enjoy sewing, it just always takes me longer than what I think it will.

I am happy that you have decided on the scheduled c-section. Maybe it helps to put your mind at ease just a bit even if she decides to come earlier? I feel this one won't wait until his due date either... just a hunch. This pgcy reminds me so much of my daughter's and she came at 36 wks. Any middle names yet? I think we have finally decided on a name but our family isn't as excited as we are... it is Finley Charles and we will call him Finn. Charles is my husband's middle name. Finn symbolizes finale, finished.

Anyway, didn't mean to ramble.

Hey Judi, since you gave me my "kick" I wanted to let you know that I've made 4 blankets and 2 burp cloths... woo hoo! I posted pictures of the burp cloths with their corresponding blankets on my page. Hope you are having a lovely day. We are getting very close!

thanks...feels good just to know im not being too unreasonable. i hope ur right and they ease up a bit after he is born. i keep thinkin all the dirty diapers and sleepless nights will be all the reality check he needs lol :)

kristenpaxton - Saturday, 9 August
my biggest problem is that she only lives like 5 blocks from me...and likes to think that she is going to have him all the time. (NOT happening) She just really got under my skin big time the other day when she started telling me whats best for my son. im sitting here thinkin u know ive been through this twice...and i have 2 perfect little boys. i think i can handle it. Then of course my bf did the ONLY thing that could possibly have made me any madder at the time and sided with his mom. Sometimes i swear they make me just want to scream lol. Im soo glad they want to be in my sons life, it is truly a blessing. i just wish they would relax a little.

This last stretch seems to be flying by for me, at first I felt like August would never come and now I feel like it's almost over. I guess I am starting to get a little worried about L&D and hoping that I have everything situated for this little guy. It will be our first baby so we are very excited but really don't know what to expect. I feel like september is a freight train quickly approaching. I have my shower this weekend and all my family is in town and they haven't seen me pregnant yet so I am excited for them to see my belly and hopefully feel him kick and squirm. he acts like he has no room left in there and I feel the same way. hope your little one stays put until she's ready. hope everything is going great...

mommydaisy - Friday, 8 August
Did the doctor you have now deliver your 2 vbac babies? I guess I am leaning more towards a c-section, just worried about the recovery time. I wish there was a way to know that if I attempted a vbac it would be successful, but something tells me that's not going to happen...lol! Ugh, I feel like I just have to make the decision so I can be more prepared and make peace with it. Maybe I'm making things more complicated than they need to be?!

Joy-S - Friday, 8 August
 Ok, that's real cute!!

michelles - Thursday, 7 August
hey judi, I always enjoy reading your posts, you always have good experienced advice. I read your post about the struggle of deciding whether to go c-section or vaginal and even though I am scared of c-section (actually scared of both) I think it sounds like the better option for you. LIke you said, that way your family and DH could be there and since it's your last baby he probably doesn't want to miss it. Plus then you don't have to go through labor and you would feel as if you had some control over the situation medically. anyway, hope you decide what is best for you and baby, good luck. can't wait to read the birth story!! :)

mommydaisy - Thursday, 7 August
I'm glad the dizzy spells have eased up some. I know what you mean about the days dragging, I've been feeling a lot more uncomfortable lately. I'm so excited to meet my girl but I'm kinda sad to think this will probably be my last pregnancy and just how fast life seems to be going. I read your comments about possibly having another c-section. I had a section with my son after having a long, difficult labor. My Doc and I have been discussing how this baby will be born. Now that I have GD were waiting to see how large she will get before making a decision. I'm afraid of a uterine rupture and having another bad labor experience only to end up with a repeat c-section. Aaahhh...decisions...decisions!

sharra - Wednesday, 6 August
Hey, Judi! Did your doctor say anything about low iron causing your dizziness? I am dizzy...so I am drinking a lot of h2o, having more iron, eating every 90 min and my blood pressure is good. What eles could it be?

bellababys - Wednesday, 6 August
hi judi, hope you had a better day today. take care

mommydaisy - Wednesday, 6 August
I'm glad to hear your doc doesn't think your dizzy spells are serious, but I know it can be frustrating when things like that go unexplained. Hang in there!

gigimuffin1 - Tuesday, 5 August
It is 205pm right now. It was about 4am when I wrote last night- I couldn't sleep so I just finally got out of bed and dozed sitting up in a chair with my feet on an ottoman. Yes I am hopeful he can be full term- I would like to have my baby with me and take him home when I leave. It is so hot here- 100'F and the heat index is 108'F. I try and stay in as much as I can, but I registered my 6 year old for 1st grade today and then we had to go buy school supplies- I am ready for a nap. Yes I agree - no sleep mkes everything seem awful!!!

bellababys - Tuesday, 5 August

Hi Judi- Thanks for the words of encouragement! I am so happy to be at 32 weeks and the doctor is now saying I may make it to 39!
Have a wonderful day- I was completely uncomfortable trying to sleep ..so I am on the computer this morning

bellababys - Tuesday, 5 August
hi, judy how are you today

youngmummy2be - Tuesday, 5 August
Thats crazy that they arent telling you anything!! I'd be demanding it!! I couldnt do shared care between midwife and GP as i moved to Bendigo after being pregnant and couldnt find a doctor to take me on (Doctors are extremely scarce where i am) so i see Midwife every week now but it was every month to start with then every fortnight and now every week and i alternate midwife and gyno now just to keep an eye on the cholstesis!! I tell ya what though its getting scary!! Everyone keeps telling me i have dropped dramatically and they all think i am gonna go early so i am running round crazy trying to do everything hahaha.. just organised the bolt for the car today because our car has modifications on the back parcel shelf it needed an engineers report to make sure its safe!! You seriously dont realise how much has to be done until you have so little time to do it!! hehe.. Well keep me up to date and tell me what the Midwife says!! My midwife the other day told me shes betting on a girl.. but thats only by the way i am carrying.. but i feel like i am carrying a boy.. ohwell as long as its healthy hehe..

maha55 - Monday, 4 August
..yes running to nathroom drives me nuts esp at night whenever I move from side to side got to pee!!!..we have an outside toilet so I have the bedroom bucket!!

Yes stress can cuase our giddiness too I think..I try to take time out even 5 min in day to just STOP close my eyes and breathe!!! and when I have kids make sure I lay down for an hour before they come home from school...

hang in there xx

mommydaisy - Monday, 4 August
Hi Judi. Sorry for the late response, my grandmother passed away and we had her funeral this weekend. I've just been exhausted.
Your dizzy spells sound awful. Have you passed out during an episode? Do take it easy, and I hope you get some better info from the doc tomorrow. Good luck, let me know what they say.

jojo21 - Sunday, 3 August
Thank you so so much for your kind words.. You really have made me feel at ease. I just want to be calm and relax more! I cannot wait to meet my baby one day, and the next, im freaking out because im scared im not ready.. I guess its natural, its just hard to deal with too. Thanks again, best wishes to u and your little one x

youngmummy2be - Sunday, 3 August
Your midwife doesnt tell you how your bub is laying? They are about a week and a half old the photos, but this website has actually stratched them and i dont look as big in them.. very odd..
