More.

I married my wonderful husband 2 years ago and he has no children, I have a 16 year old son from a previous marriage. We really wanted a child together so we tried for 9 months and finally conceived. I have lupus and arthritis in my lower back and with my age makes me high risk!

3-14-08

I went to the high risk doctor today and everything looks great we found out in our ultra sound its a boy! I really wanted a girl since I already have a boy but I will take what ever god gives me! Hopefully I can try for a girl but with my age and lupus its all in gods hands! I'm just so thankful that the baby looks healthy!!

How`s my pregnancy doing?

No morning sickness - that must be great. I struggled so much through about 6 weeks of feeling so horrible. Luckily I wasn't sick, I just felt dreadful and couldn't eat or cook at all. I lost about 5 lbs up until 12 weeks (which of course I have now gained plus more, I think I am now about 6-7lbs over my pre-pregnancy weight).
Well, I am only half way through and I am already geting fed up with people's comments (sorry to have a good old whinge!). Yesterday I was walking along through the village where I live and I walked past a lady I know and she said 'wow are you sure its not twins!'. I know that I was wearing a pretty large and baggy jacket, but it made me feel like I must look enormous. I have had so many comments from people about looking big, or if they want to be more diplomatic 'blooming'. It does get to you. I never comment about how big or small other pregnant ladies are because I know how upsetting it can be - to be told 'wow you look small for your dates' must be just as bad. GRRR
I tend to tell people how well they look, becuase I always think that people that are pregnant do look well. I wish people could be a bit more thoughtful. To think that I will have this for anothre 4 1/2 months!!
Sorry, sorry for going on.....I promise no more!

About the scan next week, no I don't know if it is a boy or girl yet. I am really hoping that we can find out next week. I will keep you posted!

I know what you mean about not wanting pregnancy to be over with. Generally I have been feeling so well and like you I love to feel the baby moving. I am with you about wanting time to hurry along too...it will be fantastic to meet the baby when he/she arrives.

Let me know about your blood results when you get them. I hope that you are keeping well. Best wishes, Valerie.

thanks for your reply, its good to know im not alone in feeling this way! its not easy to know the expected weight gain per week is at about 1 pound.especially when the last two months i have doubled that!

babylishes - Wednesday, 14 May
Thank you for your message.....congrats to you too...I would like to have a girl but no matter what it is im still happy

I am pleased to hear that you had such a good Mothers Day and that your son spoiled you. Mother's Day is always a special occasion. We had ours back in March in the UK which seems ages ago now! We went out for lunch that day, but I was at the stage of pregnancy where I was struggling to eat anything so it wasn't as great as it could have been. I am glad to have put that period behind me...it already feels like a distant memory.
So, you will have a shorter pregnancy which is good as there is less time to wait until your baby comes! I am almost at the half way point and am getting impatient for my scan next week...the days feel like they are passing by so slowly! I really am not good at waiting at all!
Have you got the results back about your kidney function? I remember you saying that you were waiting on some test results. I hope everything is ok since you had the kidney stones. Take care and speak to you soon, Valerie.

lacywalk - Monday, 12 May
Thanks for the support! I completly agree with you and just want to ejoy my pregnancy as much as possible. My husband was suprisingly very supportive about it and I am so lucky to have him. Thank you for the kind words and have a Happy Mothers Day!

A very HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to you :- ) I hope that you have a special day with your family and that your son spoils you today. (I'm not sure how good boys are with remembering things like that and buying appropriate presents and cards? My girls like any reason for a celebration, especially if it is an excuse to eat cake!!)

It's not Mother's day here sadly AND to make matters worse I am stuck at work (I have to work one Sunday a month, which doesn't sound very much, but it seems to come around so quickly! The bonus is that I get paid overtime)

5lbs 15oz is a good size for your son as he was a month early. If your baby is born at 40 weeks this time then I guess he will be maybe 7lbs or so which will be just right. I am hoping that this time my baby may be a bit smaller than the last two....anything less than 8 1/2 lbs would be nice :-)

I hope you are having a lovely weekend, Valerie x

sparklyval - Friday, 9 May
Hello! It must have been wonderful to see your baby again on Monday. I bet it was so re-assuring to know that everything is ok and that he is growing as he should be - 1 pound, 9oz sounds like a nice size to me. How big was your son when he was born?
I am pleased to hear too that you don't have any more kidney stones. I know how unpleasant they are from speaking with my dad. I hope that you get your results back soon and that you don't need to have any more treatment.
I can't believe that it is almost the weekend again! The weeks have been passing so quickly recently. I have to work for 5 hours on Sunday, so I don't have a full weekend at home, but I am looking forward to tomorrow with the family. Lots of jobs to do though :(
Have you got anything planned? Does your son still like to do things with you or is he very independent? Anyway, I hope you have a good weekend, take care Valerie

sparklyval - Tuesday, 6 May
Hi! Sorry for the delay in writing back. I have had a few days out with my family, including a night away from home, so I haven't been near a computer since Friday. (Monday was a bank holiday here so it was nice to have a long weekend!)

Sorry to hear about the kidney stones. My Dad has trouble with kidney stones from time to time and I know from him how painful they can be. He has had to have treatment to break up a very large stone in the past, which wasn't very pleasant either. Have you had kidney stone problems before - is it part of the illness you have, or is it to do with the pregnancy? It is a such a shame that you are having to suffer. I hope this is a better week for you.

How was the ultrasound last week? Did they see any more stones? I bet it was exciting to see your baby again! AND - another ultrasound yesterday! How did it go?

I hope you are feeling much better now, thinking of you, Valerie

firsttimemomtobe - Monday, 5 May
No, I have the choice between St. Anthony's, Deaconess, or Baptist. We were leaning toward Saints, but might take a tour of Deaconess to see what they have to offer as well. You?

firsttimemomtobe - Saturday, 3 May
Oh no! This darn weather, it sucks. Hail cracked my windshield in three places :-( and of course the numerous dents in my car. I drive a fairly new yellow cobalt, now it has lots of character, lol. I heard it might get bad next week too. Be careful out there!

firsttimemomtobe - Friday, 2 May
Hah, yeah I know! I used to live in Moore off santa fe and like 27th street. Now I live in MWC, we've had to leave twice now for bad weather. I'm used to it coming from Moore though, that has to be the worst city for tornados, and to think May 3rd anniversary is coming up in two days.

It sounds as though the doctors have got all your care sorted out for when you deliver your baby, which is good. After having your son early I guess you will be preparing yourself for going in to labour before your due date. The last few weeks are quite hard going - I remember feeling so big and heavy, and everything was much more difficult (especially putting on shoes!). As long as everything is ok with your baby then it might be quite nice to miss the last couple of weeks. As I understand it (though I might be wrong) it doesn't follow that you will get pre-eclampsia again because you had it the first time, so hopefully things will be more straightforward this time.

Its great that you wil get to have at least a year at home with your baby. It is such a special time while the baby is so little. I had a whole year away from work when I had Kate and I totally enjoyed it. I didn't really want to return at the end of it, but sadly finances dictate what we have to do sometimes! You are right about it being worth it, despite it being a bit tight with money. In our family, no matter how much money we have coming in we always seem to spend it, so if we have less we have to just be more careful and go without the luxuries.

I am envious of you having your scan next Monday. I will be looking forward to hearing all about it. I have to wait until 22nd May for my next scan, but hopefully that is when I will be able to find out whether I am expecting a boy or a girl. If we find out, the hardest thing will be keeping it quiet from our children as we have decided not to tell them. At the moment I am waiting to get the results of the blood test I had taken a week ago - it is the screening test for down's syndrome etc. I am a little bit anxious in case it shows any problems but trying not to think about it too much.

Must go and get the children to bed as they are running around the house and it is getting late. Take care, Valx

thx4grace - Thursday, 1 May
So glad you love it! I DO TOO! :O)

mamatess - Thursday, 1 May
Thank you! : )

When he has the hiccups it is like a small jerk or muscle spasm in my belley every 7 seconds or so for about a minute. It is very bizarre. I love it! I remember asking my dr about it 11 years ago 'cause I worried it was as annoying for my baby as it is for me when I get the hiccups. She assured me it is not. Thank goodness 'cause little Kasen is just hiccuping away! :O)
Do you enjoy all the movements? Wow - our due dates are 3 days off. Exciting! Some of the gals in other weeks crack me up all having their babies at the same time and sharing that. It is pretty cool!

snoogy - Thursday, 1 May
I don't remember being this hormonal the last couple times but of course that was quite a few years ago! I'm just waiting on this work day to end. 43 minutes to go! :o)

chilepeppr - Wednesday, 30 April
Well, when i went to my doc appointment my cervix was dialated and i had to have a curclage put in..so thats why im on bed rest

septmommie - Wednesday, 30 April
today i am more swollen, but it could be the can of walnuts i finished off yesterday!! Today it is my hands. I'm thinking maybe too much sodium is seen in the hands and too much heat and standing is seen in the feet....but this is just my medical hypothesis!! otherwise i'm feelin great and i think this weekend we decide on baby room theme!! How exciting!

chilepeppr - Wednesday, 30 April
Im going to the doc tomorrow, and next week for a fetal echocardiogram, and the week after that to my regular doc, then back to the high risk doc the week after that, so i guess im pretty busy for being on bed rest..but i have a wheel chair so i dont have to do much walking...my last visit they said the baby was about a pound and a half..is that alot?

sparklyval - Tuesday, 29 April
Hello, I won't be able to have a home birth as neither of my first two deliveries were particularly straightforward - nothing too major, but enough to make it more sensible to be at hospital for the birth. I don't mind, I'm not sure that I would like a home birth anyway. How about you? You are a bit closer to your due date than me - have you been thinking about the delivery at all? How was it when your son was born?
With regard to the epidural, I had to have one first time round as I was induced. Second time I was able to give birth without, but sadly I had a retained placenta so had to go in to theatre to have it removed and needed an epidural for that. I would like to have this birth without one at all! How about you?
I am very lucky with regard to maternity leave as I work for a University and they have a very good maternity policy. I will be having a whole year off work. I get almost 6 months on full pay, reduced pay for 3 months and then a period of 3 months unpaid. Assuming that we can afford it I would like to have the whole 12 months off. All women in the UK can have a year off work, but not all employers pay very well. I think that everyone gets 12 weeks paid leave, but after that it varies according to where you work. I worked for the University when I had Kate and also had a year off then, although at that time, only 6 months was paid - 6 months was upaid, which was a bit of a struggle financially, but worth it!
Are you working at the moment? I think your profile says you are a nurse? Do you work for a hospital? Do you get much maternity leave too?
May 05th is really soon - I bet you are excited about your next scan. Sometimes they do get the sex of the baby wrong, so there is a chance that it could still be a girl. At this scan they should be able to be able to tell for sure. I hope it goes well, I will be thinking of you.
I find it hard to sleep sometimes too. I have been getting horrible pains in my hips when I have laid on my side for too long. I like to sleep on my tummy and its just not possible now, so sleeping can be a bit problematic. Its good practice for when the baby comes later this year!
At least my headache has gone now! Speak to you soon. Val

septmommie - Tuesday, 29 April
Hello, luckily i had about a week of the swelling pretty bad...but all seems to have gone back to normal. I was really good about soaking my feet in cold water and still sleeping with them elevated. We've got softball all night tonight, so we'll see if that has an effect or not.

chilepeppr - Tuesday, 29 April
thank you, and congrats to you to...i was also losing weight when i found out i was pregnant..i am now on bed rest and i gained 14 pounds since the begining=(..i go back to the doc in two weeks being on bed rest has me eating healthier b/c all my meals get brought to me in bed..so im not able to run out everytime i have a craving.so we will see what happens..they told me at my last appointment that the baby was about a pound and a half.

sparklyval - Monday, 28 April
Hi! There definitely seems to be a big difference in ante-natal care between the US and UK. All health care is provided by the national health service, which is paid for through our taxation system. This means we don't have to pay any private health care, but it also means that the service offered can be a little basic. I wish that 8 week scans were standard here - it is the first few months that are the hardest to cope with. You find out your are pregnant, feel really rough, but have no re-assurance that there is a baby developing inside! I am pleased to be through that stage.

I was shocked about the midwife not listening to the heartbeat too. I expected that to still be standard practice. You expect health care to improve over time, not get worse!

When do you have your next scan? I have to go to the local hospital for a scan on 22nd May which is only a few weeks from now. It is always so exciting to see the baby on the screen. I hope that your scan goes well - will you be able to post a picture?

I hope that you are well. I seem to have a dreadful headache today, but I think it is my own fault as I am tired due to staying up too late at night! Must get more sleep :-)
