More.

I married my wonderful husband 2 years ago and he has no children, I have a 16 year old son from a previous marriage. We really wanted a child together so we tried for 9 months and finally conceived. I have lupus and arthritis in my lower back and with my age makes me high risk!

3-14-08

I went to the high risk doctor today and everything looks great we found out in our ultra sound its a boy! I really wanted a girl since I already have a boy but I will take what ever god gives me! Hopefully I can try for a girl but with my age and lupus its all in gods hands! I'm just so thankful that the baby looks healthy!!

5-30-08

I failed my glucose test, my sugar levels are so high that they are not even making me take the 3 hour test, instead they are putting me on medication to lower my sugar levels and I have to start checking my surgar levels everyday. They are sending me to a dietican to go over what foods I can and can't eat. I'm already high risk I really didn't need this to go along with everything else!

How`s my pregnancy doing?

How`s my pregnancy doing?

Hi Kathy! Thanks for your message. My husband is recovering from his minor injury. He has even cycled to work today so it can't be too bad. You know what most men are like though - it is always worse for them than it is for women in the same situation!! It is a good job men don't have to go through pregnancy and childbirth LOL

I can't believe that you have lost 3 pounds...I just seem to be gaining weight steadily at the moment - about a pound or so each week. I think I may have gained about a stone altogether. I am starting to feel big now. Bending down to put on shoes etc. has become a bit more awkward!!

How have you been feeling? Sorry it has taken so long to write to you but I have had a really busy few days as I managed to get a night away with my husband without the children on Sunday night. We had a couple of days to go to see Bon Jovi in concert in Manchester (which is about 2 hours by car from where we live). I have been a fan of the band since I was 15 and have seen them as often as I can when they tour the UK. This was probably the best concert of theirs I have been to and lived up to all my expectations. Jon Bon Jovi is 46 now, but seemed to have the energy of someone half the age (I wish I had as much energy!) The band played for 2 hours 45 minutes and the music was outstanding! It was very strange to be away from the children for so long (we haven't had a night away from them for over a year), but it was lovely to have some time alone with my husband. Somehow I think it will be the last time for quite a while (years even!!) with a new baby due soon. Apologies about my taste in music

So, how are you getting on? Is the dietician happy with how things are going? I hope everything is ok. Valerie x

Well, on the teaching job, I went in last week and talked to the principal/superintendant at the school I was at last year. He told me he'd given my job away to another teacher. The only way there's going to be a job for me there, is if they add another kindergarten classroom. I need to call and find out if the other pre-k/k school is hiring! I've resolved that I'll just stay home if I don't get a teaching job.

It's exciting that you're almost there! I'm hoping our baby comes early, because our builder may not be done with our house! Everything seems on track though, so I guess it's nothing to worry about.

I LOVE being pregnant!!!!! Our little man's having SO much fun in there! It makes me happy!

Thanks for responding. I am going to have my mom check my blood sugar tomorrow an hour after I eat (she works in a nursing home). We will see what it shows.

How exciting! I go to the Moore-Norman Tech Center on July 25th for my 4D ultrasound!!! With my ultrasound at my dr's office I got 1 4D ultrasound pic, but that was it. I can't wait until I go on July 25th! I'm glad to hear yours went well!! You're almost there! I'm SO envious that you're SO close to your little pumpkin's arrival!

when i met with the nurse after i failed the 3 hour test she said that it's likely i'll have more ultrasounds - at least one. i haven't met with the doctor since i was diagnosed with GD - they wanted me to wait until i was on the diet for 2 weeks, so i meet with him on friday. i'll be asking about that for sure. the clinic i go to automatically does a 4d ultrasound for everyone at 20 weeks, but my baby wouldn't take his face out of the placenta and we coulnd't get him to move no matter how hard we tried! i'm hoping i can convince them to try again so i can get a good look at him. my husband and i are wondering who's nose he's going to inheret - mine or my husbands or a nice mix of both! lol! i wish i knew which way my baby was laying!! I feel two lumps and either arms or legs in two spots - one spot is just to the left of my belly button and the other is a nice wedged spot under my right rib cage. fortunately i don't have the baby on my bladder all the time...but it's pretty set in stone that i have to run to the bathroom every 2 hours on the dot. it's exhausting!

firstbabyd - Monday, 23 June
i'm so happy for you!! everything sounds like it's going really great! i have my next appointment on friday and i hope the doctor can tell me where abouts my baby is hanging out in there. seems like he's sideways and diagonal most of the time still with a random kick/punch in the bladder every now and again to make sure i don't forget he's in there! lol! i hope your 4d ultrasound went really well!

firstbabyd - Friday, 20 June
hi kathy! it's been awhile so i thought i'd stopped by to see how things are going?! hope the diet is going well! so far so good with me...i only have to prick my finger twice per day now. i've noticed though that ever since i've started this my fasting sugars have been getting progressively higher - weird. now if i can just get this baby un-lodged from my rib cage! hope you have a great weekend!

corrynn - Wednesday, 18 June
thanks for the comment because it really bothered me actually. even in junior high when i was a stick, i was considered "overweight" if you just looked at my weight..but then like i said i was a barrel chested, stick with a ton of muscle. i literally look 20-30lbs less than i actually am. my body has always been weird like that!

carriecouch - Wednesday, 18 June
I'm applying at other schools in the district here (there are several schools here in town). I am hoping pregnancy doesn't hurt me getting a job! As you can tell by my pics, I can't HIDE the fact that I'm pregnant. I'm HUGE! I may have to just stay at home, but as you said they're only that small once! I'm going to love it if that has to happen, but financially it would be best if I could get a teaching job! Budget cuts suck!!!

sparklyval - Tuesday, 17 June
Hello Kathy, It was Father's Day here in the UK on Sunday too (Finally a day that I have found we have in common with the US!). Unfortunately Father's Day didn't go quite as we had planned! We ended up in the casualty department (ER) on Sunday morning. We stayed away on Saturday night as scheduled so that we could visit the Zoo on Sunday. We were just getting ready to leave the hotel on Sunday morning when my husband said 'hey, what's happened to my knee?' - it had a huge swelling just below the kneecap. Consequently we had to go to the nearest hospital and spent two hours there while he got examined and x-rayed. Thankfully it wasn't anything too serious - something called bursitis which is swelling caused by a fluid sac behind the knee bursting. But sadly we didn't manage the zoo trip! It wasn't quite what my husband was hoping for on Father's Day!! We did manage to salvage the day a bit by going out for a nice meal in the evening....we will plan for the zoo trip later in the summer! He had a few nice presents too that the girls had helped me sort out for him, so he wasn't too miserable!! I hope that your Father's day turned out to be less stressful!!

It is good to hear that your sugar levels are dropping. I am a bit slow to catch on, but I have just realised that your baby is due almost exactly the same time that my brother is expecting his first. His partner has just turned 30 weeks, although she will probably go full term, so I guess they will have their baby after yours is already born. I am very excited about the prospect of becoming an Auntie! I never thought my brother would ever have any children - they never seemed all that interested.

It does sound as though things are much better for you than they were a couple of weeks ago. (I am glad to hear that you can have tea afterall!!) The baby shower in a couple of weeks should be fun and help you to finish off all the preparations for your little man arriving. I am just beginning to think through what I need to get - I must write a list!
Take care, Valerie

I'm a pre-k teacher (or at least I was this year). I could try to get on at another school district, but the closest district is half an hour away. The reasoning for replacing me is school budget cuts, and "last one in first one out" situation. However, there's a teacher who it was her first year at the school as well, that got moved from kindergarten to MY pre-k job!!!! The only thing that she has that I DON'T is a kid enrolled in the school!!!!!!!!! I'm NOT happy about the situation. I will stay calm and relaxed JUST for my little guy! I'll do what I have to do. I will try to find another teaching job, but if I have to I will stay at home.

carriecouch - Monday, 16 June
My weekend was great!! Right now I'm not doing so fantastic! I went to talk to the principal at the school I was at this year, and he didn't give me much hope that I'd have a job there this coming year. I'm currently buffing up my resume and revising my cover letter for different schools in the area. I may be a stay-at-home mom! Our budget would be TIGHT and we'd have to cut out A LOT of extras! We could manage...I don't know. I'm just frustrated that I've been replaced at the school I was at! Well that's my life...

I'm SO excited that your little bundle has moved into position! How fantastic!

bed rest is horrible! i try so hard to stay in bed but I get so lonley! I cried when my fiance' left for work last week! I just hate being alone!

sparklyval - Friday, 13 June
Hi! How do you cope with just drinking water or milk? (I ask while drinking a big mug of tea!) I love my tea - I can't imagine having to go without it at the moment. I still miss having the odd beer or glass of wine. Hey, but at least you can have cheese. I have been eating quite a lot of cheese of late! Maybe I need the calcium for the little bub!? I found myself buying 5 different types of cheese at the supermarket the other day. Maybe I am secretly an over-sized mouse!!?

June 28th is coming around so fast. I hope that you can get sorted out with most of the baby gear that you still need. I feel totally dis-organised. All of the baby stuff we have is out of my reach in the loft. I am going to have to pester my husband to climb up there soon and try and find things! I have bought a few clothes, and a baby monitor second hand. I also have a brand new pram/pushchair, which I was very excited about getting some time ago.

How is the nursery coming along? Is it ready for your little chap now?

Well, best go and put a few things in an overnight bag ready for tomorrow. We are planning to take the girls to the zoo on Sunday. It's great having kids as you get to do all these kind of crazy things!! Have a good weekend. Valerie x

carriecouch - Friday, 13 June
I'm finding myself getting lazier and lazier each day! I've also been a little light headed, so I have to sit down more than usual. I get short of breath SO quickly now!

As far as the job situation goes, I don't know if I'll even have my teaching job back again in August. I've put my resume in at another school here in town. The plan is that I'll teach right up until I have baby Ryan. I'm hoping the timing will be right to where I can go on maternity leave and stay gone through Christmas (since I'm due in late October and there will be a Thanksgiving break and Christmas break in there as well). I don't know if that's going to work or not. I'll go back when I have to.

I'd love to stay at home, but my husband just bought a new $40,000 truck, we're in the process of building our first home $175,000, and we're having a new baby! We could make things work if I don't get a teaching job in August, but we'll be able to live a LOT more comfortably if I have a job too! My husband is a vet and makes GREAT money, but our budget would be TIGHT if I didn't work! We'll see...

Yay that you're getting SO close! Sucks that you are on partial bedrest and have gestational diabetes!! It will all be over before you know it!! :) Keep in touch! Good luck dear!

firstbabyd - Friday, 13 June
OMG - you poor thing! I can't imagine having to take those pills 2x a day if they smell like that. That has to be horrible! You have my complete sympathy! I bought those individual packets of Splenda yesterday and used one in my coffee this morning and it was good. I haven't tried it in anything else yet though. You know what really freaks me out about this GD stuff...and maybe I'm just being an irrational worry-wart (this is highly likely...lol) is that our risk for developing diabetes later goes up. We're likely to develop it with any additonal pregnancies (this is my first so that news REALLY broke my heart) and with each pregnancy my book says the risk for diabetes later goes up by three. I wanted to have at least 3 kids and to tell you the truth - all of this news has really sort of scared me out of having any more. I never hear anyone else worry about that stuff...am I over-reacting you think?

firstbabyd - Friday, 13 June
i loooove my cereal in the morning so trying to eat toast or english muffins with peanut butter and glass of milk just makes me want to gag. i can eat oatmeal too but she said it has to be the unflavored kind...what fun is that? she did say i could add some splenda to it if i need it to be sweeter because splenda is ok for me to use (in small quantities). i don't have a prescription for insulin pills...hoping i won't need them. i have to go back next wednesday for them to review my food journal and blood sugar levels that i've been documenting and we'll take it from there. it's interesting to see what some foods do to your numbers. last night for dinner i had a steak, 1/2 cup corn, 1/2 cup cottage cheese, dinner roll and a glass of water then walked on the treadmill for 15 minutes and when i used my meter my score was 106! with all that food! my levels have been really low today though for some reason. it's weird. do you have to use those ketone strips in the morning? i do - and it wasn't good for me today! i'm thinking i might have to drink a small glass of milk in the middle of the night during one of my many bathroom trips.

carriecouch - Friday, 13 June
How are you? Is your little one having fun in there?

carriecouch - Friday, 13 June
I'm sure will stick with the name Ryan Matthew! I'm feeling FANTASTIC!! My husband's boss's wife just brought by a baby Speedo she bought for me in Colorado. They're hilarious!! He won't be able to wear them except to play in the bathtub at home, since he's due in October. They're SO cute though I'll take some pics of him in them when he comes!

sparklyval - Thursday, 12 June
Good evening (well, it is evening here anyway).
Wow! Your diet sounds a little complicated, although it does seem that you have plenty of things you can choose from to eat. Initially I thought you were going to have a lot of 'regular' food cut out. It must be a bit of a pain having to measure out everything and combine things accurately. It is all for the best though - best for you and for your baby boy. I am glad to hear that your sugar levels have already reduced to what they should be. I bet you are pleased about that, especially if you are feeling better too. Things sound as though they are going well (right?) Don't get too hung up about weight gain (easy to say, although that is exactly what I have been doing!). The last 2-3 weeks I have gained as much weight as I have put on up until that point. Like you I am guessing it is related to the baby growing.
I can't believe it is nearly the weekend again already. We are having Saturday night away - just a little break for the weekend. It will be nice to be away from home for a short time. Life has been so busy recently! How are you? Have you got anything on this weekend? It can't be too long until you have your next baby shower?
Hope you are OK. All the best, Valerie

firstbabyd - Thursday, 12 June
The problem I sort of have with my dietician is that I wasn't really given much for examples. I basically just need to figure out how many carb units I'm eating and take it from there. Mostly I've been snacking on a piece of string cheese and wheat thins. She said as long as I stay within my guidelines of 1-2 carb units per snack I can eat anything I want (though noted that 10 wheat crackers is healthier than 1/2 cup of ice cream...hahaha!). What kind of cereal are you eating? I tried shopping around last night and it looks like the majority that I find - even the "healthier" brands seem loaded with carbs (some as much as 47 grams (which is about 4 carb units for me) per serving!
