I put this on the GD forum also....kiggs: ketones and protein in your urine are 2 different things if you have protein in your urine that would mean a few things..but the most common would be preeclampsia. Ketones on the other hand is a follows........... Everyone needs fuel to turn into energy. Your body's first choice of fuel is glucose, but if for any reason your body can't use glucose it has an alternative - fat. To use fat as a fuel your body first has to break it down into small pieces; these small pieces are called ketones. If you have ketones in your urine that isn't a good thing because your burning fat which isn't a good thing when your pregnant or for anyone who is diabetic.

Ketones are formed when your body's fat stores have to be accessed for energy. Normally, you eat food and then the body converts it to glucose/blood sugar for use as energy by your cells. Your insulin is then like a key, unlocking the door to the cell so it can access this blood sugar. In pregnancy, placental hormones make you more resistant to your own insulin (in essence 'warping' the key to the door) and make it harder to get that glucose from your blood into your cells. So while your blood remains high in blood sugar, your cells can be starving. The fetus absolutely must have energy, so if your pancreas cannot make enough insulin to overcome the hormone-caused resistance, the cells start accessing other sources of energy, like fat stores. The by-product of this is ketones.

Ketones usually occur because you are either:

not eating enough total calories
going too long between meals
skipping meals/snacks
nauseous, not eating well/throwing up, and so not getting enough food for energy
so insulin-resistant from hormones that your body cannot access the blood sugar that's there

I saw your post in GD. Yes, stress can affect your levels. I had GD controlled by diet with first pregnancy and this time around I have been on insulin since week 12 and now I am 37 wks. I have to travel 1 1/2 hr to the high risk doc every 2-3 wks. My breakfast level is alway high that day. My doc says it is from trying to get out of the house and fight the traffic to be at my appt. If you have any other questions about GD or need suggestions on foods to eat please feel free ask away.

Sorry to hear you have GD too. I agree, it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. But it still stinks!! I miss my chocolate milk and junk food cravings. The hardest thing with this diet is eating only at certain times and not snacking all day long. How have your blood sugars been? Mine have all been on the lower end of normal, so I am happy with that! I am feeling pretty good.. just having normal pregnancy aches and pains. I am ready to have this baby!! Good luck to you!
