Baby Number 2- A Boy!

Hi everyone, I am preganant with my second child. I had my first baby, a girl, Tia, she is now 7 so I thought it was time to have another. Tia was dignosied with leukemia at aged 3 so I needed to get her all good before I welcomed another into the family. Tia has been in remission and off all treatment since 2006. I also finished my teaching degree and have been a high school teacher for 5 years now.

We found out that we are having a boy which is really exciting, however the experience was ruined by the finding of enlarged venticles. They are 10.2mm which is considered mild but still scary since no one really knows what this means until the baby is born. I am hoping that it will decrease like so many other stories I am reading about on this site.

I also have gestational diabetes again, which sucks because I love sugar and seem to be craving it. I think it is a mental thing really- its a case of wanting what you can't have.

Up Date!

We had our second ultrasound today- ALL IS GOOD!!! Baby's vents now measure well within normal limits. I am so happy and relieved. Patrick is over the moon too because it is the third ultrasound where they have told us that he has a big little fella- LOL

Bloody Insulin

I have now been put onto insulin injections twice a day. So far my counts have been all over the place and I am finding it very hard to control. The injections actually don't hurt. The finger pricks four times a day do though especially in the cold weather.

Will keep this section updated as time goes on and we find out more...

How`s my pregnancy doing?

Thanks!!! I don't know his exact measurement, but will be rescanned this coming Tuesday with a specialist. I'll be certain to post our results.

Did your doc order an ultrasound?
Did they say they are going to induce you around 38 weeks or anything?

Hi Kylie

Not long to go now?
I have three weeks left and had a scan last week to have a final check of my son's vents and like you, she struggled to get a reading due to babies head being low. She thinks that the right vent is 7mm (this one was never the problem) and the left vent is around 9/10mm.
The scan before hand measured the left vent at 11.2mm so looks like it's coming down.
I think you are like me, in that you won't be convinced on these mearurements until the baby is here and pronounced healthy.
Hope all goes well for you and the diabetes thing goes away once the baby arrives as I assume it is a pregnancy related thing?
Keep me posted on how your doing and also when you have the baby, it sounds like he's gonna be big, OUCH !!
Ali xx

Hi there, thanks for checking in. 3AM and unable to sleep. Between the heartburn, hip pain and pillow adjustments sleep is a rare thing these days!
Other than that I am feeling OK. Feeling a bit more positive. My next u/s is on Sept. 9 and I meet with the pediatrician after to see about follow-up after the baby is born. I'm sure your test next week will be just fine, all the best and keep me posted.

congrats on the pregnancy....

at the 21 week follow-up I had a "senior sonographer" do the scan and she said she measured both at 6mm. I guess I will never know if both measured high, one went down and one got a little bigger or if both went down and one has gone back up again. The most important thing is how they look the farther along we are which appears to be isolated and stable.

That is another good thing about the GD is hardly no weight gain. I have only but on 5 lbs and that was not until 3 1/2 wks ago and the baby had gained about 2 lbs herself. We are the opposite in diabetes. I am alway fine at lunch and breakfast but mornings are my hardest to control. Have a great weekend.

I saw your post in GD. I am on insulin. I have been since week 12 and now I am 32 wks. I had a hard time at first. It does take time to figure out what the right amout for you is and also as your pregnancy progresses you insulin needs will increase. I would have high readings after breakfast but then my sugar would drop around luch. Also, just a suggestion, ask your doc to check your thyroid. My high risk docs check thyroids as a general rule. Once they found out that mine was not producing enough hormones and I started the medicine, My sugars came under better control. The symptoms of having non-functioning thyroid and being pregnant are the same.( tired, weight gain, skin and hair changes, etc.) So it is not something you would recongize. My docs say once your thyroid gets under control then it helps with GD.

yes, it was negative.

Thanks for responding. I noticed on the U/S report that the biparietal measurement was 2.5 weeks ahead and the head circumference was also a little bigger. Doc didn't seem worried, but I am worried that the vents and head size are related.

Hi, good to talk to someone from this corner of the world! i know what you mean when you say you find the whole GD hard, im feel like im starving! its hard that i cant have the food i really want, i keep telling myself its just for a few months more, then reality sinks in and i think what if i have this forever, i didnt have this with my first, and the fact i have it now worries me....

Just read your news on the board- SO happy for you!!! :)
Take care and enjoy, and please do still keep us updated from time to time, the positive stories are so needed to counteract the medical over-negativity.
All the best!

What BRILLIANT news!
It just goes to prove that, I think, in a lot of cases, It's just a wee growth spurt that corrects itself through time.
Well you have had enough worry to last you a life time so enjoy the rest of your pregnancy, stress free.
I will keep in touch and let you know the outcome of our little fella XXX

mariska - Monday, 30 June
Congrats!!! that is great news, enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!!

It you feel it would give you some peace of mind, then going for a level 2 scan is not a bad idea. At the moment, you could be giving yourself and little boy alot of stress over nothing at all so there would be no harm in going early to get one done. At first, I just wanted to bury my head and hope it would all go away but I am now beginning to appreciate the regular scans as the doctors can then put together a better birth plan for you.
I am sure things are gonna be ok for you so try not to worry too much and just enjoy your pregnancy, I'm gonna do that too as its not good for our wee babies.

Everything went just fine thanks. Two weeks ago his vents measured at 11mm one side, 12mm the other. This week both are at 11mm and looking stable. No other abnormalities showing and all other measurements, head, waist etc are average for 28 weeks.
We got the same doctor as last time and she explained everything in such a calm manner. Next scan in 3 weeks time and I am gonna try not to stress myself out anymore .
Do you still have a few weeks to go until your next scan?
Try not to worry as I bet your baby is gonna be fine, If your doctor was concerned in any way , he wouldn't have left such a big gap between your appointments. Hope your keeping well xx

Thank you so much for replying. This network does help eas my mind!

Hi, thanks for your nice message a few days ago! Just wondering how you are doing, and if you decided to ask for any more scans or to wait until 28 weeks? We paid for an earlier scan regarding another condition we were told our baby might have, because I just couldn't handle the 10 week wait, and it was really reassuring to get an early heads up that it was unlikely to be a problem.

Also- I found some info that doesn't apply to us because we are expecting a little girl, but it made me think of you when I read it because I remembered that your little boy's ventricular measurements were truly borderline. Apparently there is a theory that very mild ventriculomegaly in boys is less significant than in girls, because on average boys have slightly larger ventricles than girls anyway. So 10.2 in a boy, if it doesn't increase, probably wouldn't even be considered 'abnormal' by some specialists.
Whatever you decided to do, I hope you get good news at your next scan!
