Hello all. My husband and I are expecting our second child. Our first was was born via unplanned c-section 6 weeks prior to my 38th birthday. This little one is due 4 weeks prior to my 40th. I am very lucky as I have very easy pregnancies - no morning sickness, bleeding scares, etc. We are very excited for our son to have a sibling as his great love is other children. I wish you all joy in this amazing journey!

Quad screen results came back today, all within normal limits. Different labs characterize results differently; some issue stats that reflect risk of the three issues (Down's, Trisomy 18 and Neural Tube Defects), such as "your risk is now 1:200"; others (like the lab my perinatologist uses) grade results as "normal," or "abnormal." Both characterizations are based on a complex formula that involves the mother's age, LMP, weight and medical status. If you receive a risk statistic, it is to be considered in contrast to your existing risk based on age alone and you likely don't know that exact number unless you've had genetic counseling (dad's age and family backgrounds figure into this as well, though that's not generally well-publicized). This test has both a risk of false positive and a lesser risk of false negative results. Please know most mothers (somewhere near 95%) who receive a risk factor greater than that based on age alone still go on to have chromosomally normal babies.

Next step is the Level II and this time, we are finding out the gender! (Hubby would NOT go along with that last time).

2/6/08

More evidence these risk numbers are ever-evolving and must be considered in context; my perinatologist re-presented my Quad screen results today. My risk of Downs was reduced to 1:4999, greatly reduced from the original test result of 1:149, which was still a postive number in relation to my age-alone stat of 1:104. The 1:149 number was due to inaccurate presentation by the nurse. On today's Level 2 ultrasound one "soft" Down's marker, an echogenic heart foci (small calcium deposit in the heart muscle) was detected. I was counseled by my doc that, even with my advanced age, this finding warrants no further testing and we will do none. We did have the pleasure of a privates shot so obvious we didn't need the US tech to point it out. Another boy for us! We are thrilled!

4/1/08

Had my 26 week check-up yesterday. I am measuring 5 weeks ahead - April Fools (not). I consistently measured 3 weeks ahead with my first son and was warned he'd be a big baby. He was 8 pounds on the nose, so I'm taking this latest development with a grain of salt, though I will agree to take the Gestational Diabetes test at the earliest point (28 weeks) due to my age.

4/17/08

Gestational diabetes test result came back yesterday - all normal. I just have a big belly - when you're 5' 3'', there's nowhere to go but out...

sorry about your situation, i pretty sure it is hard for your sister to find out that you are pregnant but she should be happy to know that a new baby will be in her life as well. I don't have kids yet have been trying since last year but no luck instead we ( Husband & I) found out i have PCOS :(....but i'm very happy to be an anutie!!!!!!!!!! My younger sister has a 20 months old baby girl and both of my SIL have kids a 3yr old boy and an 8 month old baby girl and i'm glad they are in my life cause it makes easy on to have them around and know that at least i'm blessed have those kids in life even though they are not mine, i still love as they were. I hope your sister come around and realizes that she is lucky to have a new nephew on the way and at least she is blessed to have a baby in her life....Good luck with your new baby..

I've been TTC for 3 years now, my DH lost 3 pregnancies and now we're going to an infertility Dr. I've had 3 close family members get pregnant at the same time of all 3 of my pregnanices and I have to admit, it was VERY hard for me. Especially during the baby shower times where I've had to shop for babies that aren't mine. But personally, I knew I had to be supportive of all of my families pregnancies and not allow my experiences bring them down, that would be too selfish of me. It was very hard not being selfish but you know what, it is worth every effort and every bit of my energy because seeing these little baby beauties now I have no regrets working hard to be a good Auntie and cousin. Please try not to be angry, just give your sister some time. She will come around. There are a lot of ways your sister could be but unfortunately she's choosing to do and be the person she is so all you can do is be patient and continue to love her. Let your family know to give it some time, don't judge, just let her come around when she's ready. I hope that helps. Congratulations on your new little one. I wish you a very happy pregnancy, enjoy every second of it, I know I will when I become pregnant!

Being a TTCer I know that is really hard when it seems as if everyone around you is getting pregnant and you can't. It is very discouraging and an emotional rollercoaster. With that being sad you have not done anything wrong! Your sister should be excited for you and if anyone is being insensitive it is her. She is thinking about herself and not thinking about the effect that it could have on you and the kids. I am familiar with the situation... my sister conceived on her first try and I have been trying for years. It is hard but I am very excited to know that they are going to try to conceive again this summer. Having a new addition in your family is something to be celebrated where it is your own baby or you are becoming an aunt again. DON't Feel like you are doing anything wrong. She will come around... Just remember what a beautiful gift you have to be pregnant. Don't ever be sorry for that!

Hi, sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, I've been super busy, anyhow the amnio went well, I'm back to work now, I requested the fish test and it came back normal, no DS, thank God and also my blood work came back negative no Torch infection or Cystic Fibrosis.
In 2 weeks I'll have the final results of the Amnio. I've been told that it's more likely to be the same as the fish test results.
Thank you so much for your kind message, it gave me so much hope and optimism. We found out that we have another girl so we are very excited, glad and thankful that she is healthy.
My 6 years old daughter is thrilled and overjoyed to have a sister.
Well, thank you again for your thoughtfulness.

well it went very well,
they said that everything looks fine,
I'm still waiting for my Dr. to get a full detailed report so I can learn more about how my numbers are reduced.
thank you so much for asking.
after the ultrasound, we went back to the counselor and she said that everything looks normal. I'm still anxious but not as before. it's taking them for ever to send the report to my Dr. I'm so stessed out right now. :-(

pargy - Sunday, 27 Jan
Congrats on the second experience. My hubby and I also want one more after this. It is so wonderful being AMA and a little more settled in life. We are enjoying every minute of this experience. Thanks for your message.

pargy - Saturday, 26 Jan
Hi, i enjoyed your comments on the AMA board. I am the exact same age as you were when you had your first and hope to be the same age difference when me and hubby have our second.

If there is one thing this whole process has taught me, it is to have a positive and upbeat attitude. Take care, Margy

Yes we have the same thing happening here in NZ. I think its great that there are tests available for those that want them but I've so many false positives and false negatives here that I guess I don't have much faith in the results. I trust the rest of your pregnancy is thoroughly enjoyable. God Bless!

Hi there, I just read that you will be nearly 40 when you have your baby. I say well done to you. I will be 43 when I have this baby. I personally have chosen to have no screening tests as I am happy to have what the good Lord gives me. I wish you all the best with your pregnancy. Blessings!!
