Devyn's poop are still on the green side too. It varies from orangeish to very dark green. I am not pumping anymore though because my milk supply actually went down and regulated itself more for Devyn which is great for me no more engorgement. And no over supply any more. I want to make sure she is getting enough fatty milk though so she usually gets one bottle of formula before bed. It fills her tummy and relaxes her. I also believe it may help her sleep longer. I don't know what else to do because I love bf but I want to make sure she is healthy. When I told my doctor she had green poops she said that's fine. So she obviously wasn't too concerned but I am.

Hi, Good to hear from you. I agree that it seems silly to stop breastfeeding. You know that is not what would be causing blood, how could formula be better? I'm still mad at the nurse for wanting Jacob to have formula in his second week when we were still getting the hang of things. I wonder what the GI doctor will say. I hope it is something that will go away on its own or be easily fixed. Jacob's poop was green 2 more times after I last wrote to you. It does seem to make a difference if I switch sides as opposed to letting him stay on one to get more hindmilk. I also started exercising more and that did something to him too, so I time it better and don't try to nurse right after exercising. Last week was stressful, but so far this week is better. I'm keeping track of how much sleep he's getting. I don't think he was sleeping enough last week. I'm at least starting to get dressed each day (though not today) and we went to Home Depot with him, so we didn't feel so trapped in our home. It will be nice when we can go out to dinner and bring him along. We'd try it this week, but the stomach flu is going around. Don't need that.

Now Jacob is pooping green as well. He did yesterday twice and the day before once, but barely. Nothing green today and I tried having him eat only on one side to get the hindmilk. He's been drooling a lot lately too.

It took about two weeks to return completely to normal. She is now 11 weeks old and still has the occasional green one and sometimes mucousy as well. I think it bothers me much more than it does her. I wouldnt worry unless there is blood present.

busybeemom - Sunday, 4 May
It's normal for your baby's poo to change color. Green and yellow are both fine. If there is blood then you should be worried. Breastfed baby's poo is always changing with what mom eats. I really wouldn't worry unless you see the baby acting sick, not eatting, fever, or blood. Your baby also may not poop for days and that is normal also. Is the baby gaining weight?

eCCAbOO - Friday, 2 May
i don't know about the mucus thing...poop sort of looks like watered down honey? i asked that question a while ago and a lot of moms said their babies had that too, the honey textured poop, so i'm assuming that's normal. right now, mack's poop is back to when he was a couple weeks old...yellow and seedy, no honey :) it's fascinating that we are so poop oriented now we have babies!

Unfortunately for me whenever I feed her off the breast her poops turn green so I have to pump if I want to keep it a regular color. OR I pump off some of the foremilk and then feed her on the breast. When pumping you can tell the foremilk from hindmilk because the foremilk is watery and almost grey in color kind of when water and milk is mixed together. ANYWAYS Last night I pumped 3 ounces, 3 OUNCES!! of foremilk from my left breast before the hindmilk started kicking in! Thats ridiculous, no wonder my baby's poop turns green so quickly!

I fund this for you!!!

Not pooing for a few days is fine in breastfed babies - they are using it all up and there can be very little waste to come out. Green poo can be a sign of a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance: when your baby begins to feed they initially get foremilk which is thin and watery and low calorie - a thirst quencher, then after nursing for a while on the same breast they get the hindmilk which is the calorific stuff and is more creamy. If you swap your baby over on to the other boob too quickly when he or she is feeding, they can get nothing but foremilk and this can turn their poo green (this is a result of their getting too much lactose and their intestines not being able to digest it effectively). This is still not a problem in the short term - just make sure you get your baby to empty one breast first before swapping sides. Watery poo is not so good - could be diarroea. Diarroea is only a problem if your baby gets dehydrated. To tell if he or she is dehydrated keep a close eye on wet nappies every day - should be two to three big wet ones :)

The probiotics work great I get mine at the health food store and just wet my pinky and let him suck it off my girlfriend puts it on her daughters soother it you bottle feed you can put it in the formula.

BabyH - Tuesday, 29 April
I got the probiotics at the health food store (if you have a Whole Foods they will have it). You can either put it in thier bottle, or put some on your pinky and stick it on the roof of thier mouth to make them suck it off. If you can't find any let me know and I can have my MIL send you some since she is a naturopathic doctor and has quite the supply. Hopefully it helps you out!

hi i read your question and wanted to tell you this..i fell while i was holding my daughter holly, she hit the corner of a door, and her head developed a bump like a real size of an egg, when i turned her over i was so horrified i dropped her again and fainted, by which tiime hubby took over, we called the doctor who came immediatly and told us as the bump was not split or bleeding and the fact she was crying was good, if she had paased out we would of been inreal trouble, i dropped her because the shock of not reconizing her because she looked so horrific threw me off, i watched her for days, even the hours after i wouldnt let her sleep, i cried and cried because i felt so sad about it...any way that was in 1991, holly today is 16, and is a very lovely teenager! we can still see a faint white line across her forehead, which i find so bizarre as she never cut her self and it was whhen she was a babe in arms!! your baby will be fine, its so hard in the beginning be are so over anxous because we are all out in love with these little mites!!! your a great mum..and your baby knows it!

Hi there, my baby always had dark green poop when she was newborn. I did b/f'ing and formula. Don't know about the mucous though. Gotta go - baby woke up! xx

And yes, it was great to have my aunts visiting. I was so bumbed out the week before. But I was crying when my 85 year old aunt left. Now I worry that each time I see her will be the last.

Hi,I was just thinking of you, my fellow worry wart. My latest thing is SIDS. My baby is making terrible noises at night and he only does it in his bassinet. He sleeps fine in the old bassinet at my mom and dad's. When we got the new bassinet, I remember it smelled terrible, so we aired it out for about 2 months. Then I was just reading online about a study in New Zealand that found it was the toxic gas emitted from the mattresses that really can cause SIDS. So I went upstairs and smelled the mattress and it still does smell. We still have to get a crib mattress eventually, so now I'm going to be really picky about what we choose. There is some kind of cover for the mattress that can keep the toxicity out or else buy an organic mattress. I see that a lot of people have written to you about the green poop. It would cause me some alarm also, but I've heard that theory about the hind milk as well, so it's probably OK. If I had two babies, it would be double the worry as well. The thing is that I'm a believer you know? Where is my faith that my baby will be OK? My husband doesn't worry at all. He had that dream a long time ago about a healthy happy baby boy running around, so he has full confidence that our baby will be fine. I hope that your baby will be fine and that trying some of the suggestions in feeding will help.

i had that same problem and it was because i was making too much milk and he was filling up on the foremilk before he got the hindmilk. i just fed him from the same breast until i was sure it was empty, then switched to the other one and did the same. eventually it all fixed itself. this website was helpful for me....

Okay you have the same problems we were having. I now have to pump my breast milk to make sure that the hind milk gets to her. I was told by my nurses that fore milk is full of lactose and when digested it will turn the poops green if they aren't getting enough of the hindmilk. So what you have to do is what I have to do now. Single-side feed. Make sure that during every feeding you aren't switching sides. Feed completely on one side then next feed switch sides. That way it will guarantee that the baby is getting enough hindmilk. You said it was working for a few days when you fed twice on one side but your body was probably adjusting and making more milk. My recommendation is to pump. I love bonding with her and feeding her myself but lactose also makes them gassy when it hits their intestines and she feels a lot better when I pump and feed it to her that way. Until her poops returned to normal I also supplemented a bottle or two of formula a day.

hello, How is everything? I was just reading your comment on the green poop. I have breastfed all five of my kids, and my youngest, Trenton> 2 months old, has green poop every once and a while. I was told this is because he had a tummy ache. Maybe gas. I know this is not what your baby has, but I wanted to tell you to go to a website. It is LaLecheLeague.org. You can find a local group in your area and they will be able to tell you what to do. The phone number of a woman will be listed on the site that you can call and she will be from your area. It is a GREAT way to get breast feeding answers. I hope you go to it , it will really help you. take care. and I hope all goes well.

My daughter had the green, mucuosy, frothy stools when she was 5 weeks old until she was about 8 weeks old. She had no other complaints and it never seemed to bother her and the doctor was not overly concerned. I tried cutting out dairy which didnt work, so thought maybe hindmilk/foremilk imbalance and fed her twice from same breast and made sure she emptied the breast to ensure she got lots of hindmilk. It eventually cleared up but I'm unsure if the block feeding is what did it.

Hi There,
I agree with some of the other posts, cutting dairy out of your diet may help. Also, mucousy, green or light yelloe stool can be the sign of a virus such as a cold, or a stomach bug. If your son is already six weeks old and just started to have problems now I would think it is not a milk allergy as this would have showed much earlier, however it is still possible. Does your son spit up alot? Does he have any other symptoms of allergy like hives, eczema, wheezing or nasal stuffiness? A baby with a milk allergy or intolerance can also be very fussy and cranky.
Try eliminating milk and dairy products from your diet and see in a few days if that seems to help.
I hope your son gets better soon!
