I have had 4 M/Cs in the past 3 years, last one was Jan '07. My DH and I were scheduled to see a genetic counselor in June and found out that I was pregnant before going. I am waiting on all the test results but the geneticist believes my problem sounds like a B-6 and folic acid deficiency, a condition called thrombophilia which can be inherited or acquired. This is most likely acquired because I have two beautiful and healthy teenagers and I am over 35.
The good news is that I have been taking vitamins B-6, folic acid, and biotin since Feb - for longer hair and nails - so I have been treating this potential deficiency without even knowing it may have existed. The last 4 pregnancies which terminated around 5-6 weeks when I lost all my symptoms and started bleeding and cramping. All showed empty sacs on the ultrasounds. This time, I was able to wait until my first regularly scheduled ob appointment at 7w5d - which is exactly one week longer than any of the previous 4 times. We half way expected to see another empty sac, but much to our surprise this time I actually have an embryo with a beating heart, not just another empty sac. Our doctor said everything looks perfect.
I had a second ultrasound at 9w6d and again everything is just perfect. My baby has graduated to a fetus and she was kicking around and throwing her arms about. It was so sweet. My doctor has the 3D/4D ultrasound machine and there was so much progression in just two weeks. The first time she just had nubby hands and feet - and the arms and legs were kind of short too. This more recent one looked like a baby with arms, legs, hands, feet, eyes, nose, ears - Gosh she is a cutie.
Bottom line ladies... if you've have recurrent miscarriages - don't give up. My DH and I just about called it quits this year and I was seriously considering a hysterectomy. This may not be your problem, but if you have experienced repeat miscarriages similiar to mine, I suggest you give it a try - the geneticist said that about 1 in every 2 women who have multiple miscarriages have this disorder and it goes undiagnosised far too often. It is just a simple blood test to confirm, but if your insurance does not cover it, then just try the cocktail of vitamins at least 3 months before trying to conceive again. If nothing else - your hair and nails will grow long and strong and your skin will look better too. Daily I have been taking one Folic Acid 400 mcg, B-6 100 mg, and Biotin (B-7) 1000 mcg. One vitamin I had not been taking but found out is beneficial with this deficiency is B-12.
As of my last exam, the doctor said that I am 'officially out of the woods!'
God bless you...
