I'm 40, so I am considered "older mom". And I already have two teenage girls from previous relationship.

I wouldn't say I made the decision to have another child in my time of life easily. It took me more than 6 years of my new marriage to come to this. But here I am finally. Before getting pregnant I did piles of research. So, yes, I know all about risk. That is why I opted to do CVS testing at 10 weeks, which brought me a good news - no genetic abnormalities are detected. Why I didn't chose amnio? Because it is done at 16 weeks and in my opinion it is too late to terminate the pregnancy in case of severe problems.

I'm basically healthy. Before getting pregnant, I used to drink occasional glass of wine or a couple of beer with my husband. I stopped this as soon as I tested positive. I don't smoke or use drugs. I'm almost vegetarian with ocassional fish and seafood, but no meat of any kind. So I eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies and avoid junk food. I have been practicing tai chi for more than three years and I continue it now. Since I have a beloved dog, I go for a walk every day, at least three times a day. I live in Washington state in a very clean area near the forest. Oh, and I don't have extra weight. So you see, I have a reason to believe I am well fit for this pregnancy despite me being "older", so I look forward to having my baby with optimism.

14 April, Monday

30 weeks. Two-third of pregnancy is over and the big day approaches. Still feel relatively good. LIttle guy kicks me every nigh and every morning. He slows down a bit during the day, but I feel him often enough so not to worry. Continue my tai chi classes, although I have to modify movements a bit - not to bend too low, not to kick to high etc. Also I go for a walk with my dog 3-4 times a day, so it gives me additional hour or so of excercise.

15 February, Friday

Today I went for my 2nd level ulrasound. This was the first time my husband joined me for the doctor appointment. I was a little bit worried what if we discover something wrong and my hubby would be there too and there would be no way to soften the blow for him. But it went very nicely. The doctor showed us all pictures and explained that everything looked "beautiful" and "perfectly normal". He tried to involve my husband also. At one point he said, while looking on the screen, "I see your baby has a kind heart. Do you know why I can tell?", and then to my husband, "Because you have such a kind face, your baby must have a kind heart". Other time he showed us the baby holding his tumb up and said,"Look, he is saying, not to worry dad, I am ok." It was fun. Well, I am relieved that all results are good. In a couple of days I will be 22 weeks and time is flying.

28 January, Monday.

It is 19 weeks already. Almost half-way. Recently I felt the baby move for the first time. It was like definite pokes from inside. Most of them were low and some hit my bladder. Then for a couple of days there were nothing. Today I again feel something, although not as strong. I hope soon I will feel the baby moving all the time.

Hi- thanks for the advice. I would be 12 weeks when i announce in any case. I am thinking of just telling my mom and sis first and then waiting a couple of weeks to leak to the rest of the family. That way my cousin wouldn't be slapped in the face with it right after her m/c. Good luck with your pregnancy!

Thank you so much for the contraceptive advice. I have had problems with condoms in the past, I always seem to get irritation from them so maybe I need to try a different kind. Best of luck for a happy, healthy pregnancy

Thanks. I think I will allow the finger sucking. My sister is a director of a daycare and they agree there that its more self soothing than a binki. I remember sucking my finger when i was little ended up needing braces but oh well lol.. Im so much more exhausted this week but belly grew alot its weird how it appears over night! Hope your doing well.

Contgratulations on a Baby Boy! How exciting! I'm feeling better, now that my cold is nearly gone. My U/S is next week (the 23rd). However, I am going to ask the Doctor to put the results in an envelope. My husband & I have children from previous marriages. I'm going to wait until my stepchildren are with us. We will open the envelope then. That will be Feb 2 (1.5 weeks longer, UGH!!) JK, It's worth the wait to have everyone together. My stepchildren are so excited. I don't want them to be left out of anything.

Boys aren't too hard. I am sure your husband will be able to do all the 'guy stuff' LOL. The potty training is easy though... Just throw Cheerio's in the toilet and tell him to try to sink them! My son thought that was great! LOL

Hi, I was also worried about my ultrasound appointment, especially because i am 37. Every time i go to the appointment and see the heartbeat and see that things are progressing normally I seem to breath a sign of relief. In my appointment they did look at internal organs as well as take measurements of external features. The ultrasound tech was not able to get all of the measurements that she wanted to get because of the position that the baby was in, so the remaining measurements will be taken in my next appointment which is a month away.

I have been feeling the baby move on and off, but this is the first week that i am able to feel the baby move on a daily basis. I have also been itching at night, that is a weird feeling.

I wish you much luck with your next ultrasound, I am looking forward to hearing how it goes. Take care. :)

Hi, I had my “big” ultrasound on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 where they take all of the developmental measurements. I just put the pic on the page. In the next few hours, my husband will be adding the measurements on the page as well. (He has then saved in his palm pilot) The tech was not able to get all of the measurements that she wanted to get because of the position that our daughter was in, and will get the rest on our next ultrasound appointment in a month. We did get the most important news of all, and that is that she is progressing as expected and is healthy. We have been so incredibly happy to hear that so far everything is normal. I also really like seeing her personality start to come out. During the appointment, she was moving her legs and had one arm behind her head. It was really cute.

How has your pregnancy been going? I wish you much luck and look forward to hearing your latest baby news. Take care, Margy :)

My MIL lives in Colorado and we are in California. So she is at least in another state. LOL. I did recieve my crib today and i took one look at it and cried only because it is hideous. I even sent a pic to my mom to see if maybe i was over reacting and she even said that it was. I feel horrible because i can tell my husband feels bad because his mom tried yet he knows i don't like it. You know how men are a crib is a crib. LOL

Hi there!
Thanks for getting in touch.
Yes, I was worried that at my age that I might be pushing the barrier a little, but I really think a lot of the way we think about ourselves and what our bodies can do is influenced by other people, especially the medical profession. Years ago, I can remember my stepmum being told that 27 was an advanced age! sheesh!
As long as you feel fit and healthy there should be no reason why a woman of our ages cannot have a baby!
Hugs Niki

Hiya mama! Thanks so much for your advice, I really appreciate it. I know exactly what you mean re sex in the first weeks... my concern was the advice to have baby in the same room for 6 months! LOL

I know that I will probably suffer super separation-anxiety disorder, if I don't have the baby close... I've got a little bassinet which it seems will *hopefully* fit in next to my bed, and take it from there.

Thank you so much again, and congratulations to you! I hope all is progressing beautifully!
