darci - Tuesday, 22 July
Hello.., My husband has been out of town so I haven't been able to get on here as often. Greyson still has blood in his stools. He turned six months today!!! I had a GI appointment last week and they are FINALLY doing some tests! They are checking his red/white cell count, testing for a blood disorder, the RAST test and one other thing. Depending on how the blood work comes back, they want to do a scope and a biopsy. I am not going to allow the biopsy. That just seems to invasive for such a little guy. If he was "sick", not gaining wieght, throwing up and crying alot, then I would be more likely to do it. But he really doesn't seem sick at all. He is happy, plays, laughs, is really such a good boy. He had his six month checkup today and wieghs 19.3 and is 27.50" long...So I think a biopsy is a little much at this point. I want, more than anything, to know what is going on with him. I should find out this week the results to his blood work. HOPEFULLY something shows up in there that can gives us an answer. I am going to try formula again. I have a few samples of Neocate, which is horribly expensive but at this point I would much rather him be on formula than have to have a biopsy! I did start him on rice ceral and he just got approved for oatmeal but no other solids until we get all of this figured out. I am glad to hear Mary is doing well. I bet it's nice being able to eat a normal diet... (I'm still eating rice, chicken and orange veggies... I strayed for a couple weeks but am back on track) How was it introducing her to solids?? What did you start with? It will be fun to let Greyson try new foods... He wants to eat so bad!!! He drools when he watchs us eat, it's sad... but so cute!

darci - Wednesday, 11 June
HI how is Mary doing? Did you get her results back? Hope all is well...

darci - Friday, 30 May
I haven't been on for a few days because my husband is out of town, I have a HORRID toothache and get to have a root canal on Monday and Greyson had his shots on Tuesday so it's been tough this last week... but the blood is still improving. I am still on my diet and haven't started to introduce much into yet. I have eaten a few pieces of candy and started drinking 7up but that is about it. The ped. said that I could start him on solids if I wanted and I told him I would like to wait until he is six months at least. He said that would be fine. Greyson wieghs 17lbs 10oz and is 26 1/2" long, so he growing like a weed. The doc. still isn't concerned about the blood. He told me that I am safe to continue nursing as long as Greyson isn't showing any signs of trouble; IE pain, rashes, wieght lose ect.... I wish I could go to the same doctor you went to. I would LOVE to have those tests done... I have asked them to test him and they won't. They said that are confident it's a dairy/soy allergy and we'll just have to wait it out if he won't take the bottle!!!! You will have to let me know the results when they come in. When will you find out? I am glad that you are finally getting some answers. Has Mary had blood very often lately? Keep me posted!!!

Leah also had the blood draw from her little arm. That was heartbreaking:( I hope I never have to do that again!

That's interesting, what the GI said about the elimination diet. I was just thinking earlier that there doesn't seem to be any reason to keep avoiding these foods if she's not truly allergic and/or the symptoms haven't really gotten much better. She doesn't seem to be in pain anymore, which may have just been ordinary colic earlier. She's 95th percentile for weight, so no problem there:) Now that the blood has cleared up, she just spits up all the time and has gross poops. I'll be interested to hear what Leah's doctor has to say about my diet. The lab results were e-mailed to me but she was not in the office yesterday. If I don't hear from her today I'll send her an e-mail.

Hoping you get the negative results and the green light for ice cream soon! I crave and ice cream and a chicken cheese enchilada with sour cream- mmmmmm :) Okay, better not get ahead of myself!

leahsmom - Thursday, 29 May
Well, Leah tested negative for all the foods they tested her for. So, it is still unknown whether they were false negatives or she does not have a true allergy to milk, just an intolerance. I hope her pediatrician can shed some light on how to proceed from here. She is somewhat better- no more blood. But has not completely resolved the mucusy bms or the spitting up. I guess it would just have been easier to have gotten some definite information...

PRETTIEST MOM
Once you have been hit, you have to hit 5 pretty Moms.
If you get hit again, You will know you are REALLY pretty!
So hit 15 pretty moms on your friends list to let them know they are
pretty!
Before I was a Mom
I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom - I had never been puked on.
Pooped on. Chewed on. Peed on.
I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts.
I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom
I never held down a screaming child so doctors could do tests.
Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put her
down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop
the hurt.
I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom -
I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body.
I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.
I didn't know that bond between a mother and her child.
I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important
and happy.
Before I was a Mom -
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to
make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the
wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much, before I was a Mom.
Send this to someone who you think is a special Mom.''

leahsmom - Thursday, 22 May
Oh no. I hope the GI can sort things out for her. I hadn't really thought forward to starting solids. I bet it would be hard to know whether she is reacting to what you are eating or what she is eating.

The RAST test uses a blood sample to test for allergy to the top 8 foods. I guess for kids under 1 year it is more accurate than the skin test. From what I understand a positive result is accurate but a negative could be a false negative.

leahsmom - Thursday, 22 May
I just took Leah to the doctor for her 2 month appointment. She ordered the RAST test for her. Even though the results might be inconclusive, I hope it might give us some information about what is going on with her. Has your LO had this test? Her symptoms have improved but she still has the watery, mucusy (very messy) poops. She has only had visible blood for two days (not consecutive days) I know I allowed lapses in my diet the day before. So, I am trying hard to be very strict. Her weight is still n the 95th percentile. So, at least she isn't having problems with weight gain.

darci - Thursday, 22 May
I haven't had to do the scope yet, but my aunt had to with her son when he was three years old. They don't put them out completely and from what she has told me, it horrid on the little baby. The GI said that we may have to do it with Greyson but I don't think I would allow it unless they put him out all the way... but then that is scary too. It feels like a lose-lose situation!

darci - Wednesday, 21 May
Gosh dang it... I am sorry to hear that. The scope thing is NO fun at all. I really hope they can get to the bottom of it. What cereal did you start on? Greyson's anemia test came back fine so the GI said to continue nursing and doing the elmination diet. The diet isn't SO hard now. I am a little more use to it. The blood has gotten much better and he even went one day with no blood at all. I started adding spices in, watching carefully to make sure I am not getting anything I am not susposed to. I have also started to bake the chicken and turkey instead of boiling it. I am going to try and stay on this diet until the blood is totally gone! Greyson's ped. said he could start solids at four months. His four month appointment is on the 27. I am not going to start him on anything until the blood is gone.
Hang in there. I know how frustrating and scary this whole thing is. When is your GI appointment? Let me know how it pans out...

darci - Friday, 16 May
Well, I'd say I was glad to hear abou the solids but not if the blood is still there... I have done the same thing. I get excited about it finally clearing up and then, BAM it happens again. Greyson has been unusually fussy this entire week. The blood has improved so I am not sure what is causing him to be so cranky. I haven't heard back from the doctor about his blood results. I hope he calls soon.
So, with you daughter does she act upset before or during her bowel movement? Does it seem painful to her? Do you think when the blood was happening more often, that she was in pain? I am just trying to get an understanding about Greyson. To me it seems, if there is blood, there has got to be some type of discomfort but the doctors all have told me that it's unlikely he feels anything. Aslo, did your daughters poo change? For instance Greyson sometimes has regular poops (bright yellow, seedy) other times it has mucus in it, sometimes it's thick others, really watery. When it first started happening, they were super green and filled with mucus. I swear this is driving me crazy!!!! Greyson has never had his stool tested. I have asked several times and they dismiss it saying if it was something other than an allergy he would be sick. Throwing up, loosing wieght, extremely fussy... I have seen three seperate peditricians and all of them have said that. Should I demand them to test it? Have they tested your daughters stool and if so, what do they test for? I am sorry that I am writting a novel and I realize you are plenty worried about your own baby, so I hate to be so demanding.

Hopefully the red string is the culprit for the blood. To bad they won't just give us the blood test kits, so we can test it ourselves! When you do start solids, what are you starting her off with? As far as my diet, I haven't been adding any spices but sure would like to. I have stopped eating boiled chicken and started baking it with a small amount of olive oil. So far he's tolerated that just fine.
Good luck with everything, sorry to be such a pain...

maimai - Friday, 16 May
Good idea! Never thought of that! :)

maimai - Friday, 16 May
I'm hoping that it becomes second nature quickly... we're off on holiday to Toronto and Niagra in a few weeks and am wondering how I'm going to manage eating out all the time without eating soya and dairy products! Guess I'll be on plain salads! lol. I don't think we have caltrate her, I'm taking calcichew, feels like you're eating chalk when you take it!

darci - Thursday, 15 May
Also, you might check to see if there is a Great Harvest bread company near you. They make a variety of bread that is dairy/soy free as well as GREAT ginger snap cookies...

darci - Thursday, 15 May
How is it going with your daughter? I think I am finally seeing some improvement with Greyson. He had to get his blood drawn today. Hopefully the results come back okay and I continue to nurse. I am having a hard time on this diet. Rice, chicken and orange veggies just don't cut it. I can't WAIT to eat fruit again!Good luck at the doctor tomorrow. Let me know what happens.

leahsmom - Thursday, 15 May
Hi. I think for now, I'm going to allow a bit of soybean oil. Maybe just in bread since that seems like the most time consuming thing to have to make homemade. If I don't see full results from the diet, I'll cut it out. I did go to our local grocery's health food section and found some chips and even a dark chocolate bar with no dairy or soy whatsoever. The chocolate was not very creamy but rationed in small amounts might help me with this diet. I'll let you know how it goes with the oil. It'll probably take a few weeks to sort it all out though.

leahsmom - Wednesday, 14 May
Hi, I'd love any info you have about b/f without dairy and soy. I've been researching and reading labels. My big question is whether I can have soybean oil. Some sites say yes, others no. It sure would make things easier if I could... Thanks!

treasa - Wednesday, 14 May
yeah his is an 18 right now but i have been taking him out in the sunlight. yeah i was a little scared at first and they said that everything is going to be alright. so i am not worrying to much about it.

maimai - Wednesday, 14 May
I've only been on the soy/dairy free diet for a couple of weeks and already lost quite a bit of weight since I can't eat chocolate anymore!! How are you finding sticking to the diet? Has it been easy sticking to it for 5 months? I suppose you get used to it. The only soybean oil that I have is in the extra strength calcium tablets that my doctor gave me. Since I can't have soy or dairy products my calcium intake is right down and my mum has had osteoarthritis since she was 40, so wanted to make sure I keep my calciumk intake up! Isn't it mad how soy and dairy seems to be in absoloutely everything! I never noticed before until I had to start looking at packs for ingredients!!

treasa - Wednesday, 14 May
hey girl i just read your post in the jaundice section i was wondering how long it took for your baby to get over it. cause my little boy has it.

Very easy to tell. Breastmik poo is a little runnier then paste, bright yellow and seedy. Kekoa's was like that before three months. Now is it very watery. No seeds at all. Before the amoxicillian it was brown (from solids) and now it is almost clear with stuff in it. Really gross. It also burns coming out.

I'm hoping that this no dairy diet will in the end be good for me. Cheese and ice cream aren't good for me anyways. HAHA! Even if it is skinny cow!

(Sorry for the broken messages. I'm typing one handed - someone is eating right now. HAHA!)

darci - Saturday, 10 May
How is it going with your daughter? Did you have your appointment yet? Hope everything is going well!!!!

Bri - Saturday, 10 May
I'm so sorry. My doctor said soy was ok. We don't even know if this is what is giving him cronic diarrhea. We are just testing it. So for the next few weeks will be no diary. If it doesn't work we are going to do a stool sample and some testing. I think I can give it up for a month and we'll see. After that I'm sure if that is the problem I will be feeling much better about it and since I had already done it for a month I can for several more.
