Well, I'd say I was glad to hear abou the solids but not if the blood is still there... I have done the same thing. I get excited about it finally clearing up and then, BAM it happens again. Greyson has been unusually fussy this entire week. The blood has improved so I am not sure what is causing him to be so cranky. I haven't heard back from the doctor about his blood results. I hope he calls soon.
So, with you daughter does she act upset before or during her bowel movement? Does it seem painful to her? Do you think when the blood was happening more often, that she was in pain? I am just trying to get an understanding about Greyson. To me it seems, if there is blood, there has got to be some type of discomfort but the doctors all have told me that it's unlikely he feels anything. Aslo, did your daughters poo change? For instance Greyson sometimes has regular poops (bright yellow, seedy) other times it has mucus in it, sometimes it's thick others, really watery. When it first started happening, they were super green and filled with mucus. I swear this is driving me crazy!!!! Greyson has never had his stool tested. I have asked several times and they dismiss it saying if it was something other than an allergy he would be sick. Throwing up, loosing wieght, extremely fussy... I have seen three seperate peditricians and all of them have said that. Should I demand them to test it? Have they tested your daughters stool and if so, what do they test for? I am sorry that I am writting a novel and I realize you are plenty worried about your own baby, so I hate to be so demanding.

Hopefully the red string is the culprit for the blood. To bad they won't just give us the blood test kits, so we can test it ourselves! When you do start solids, what are you starting her off with? As far as my diet, I haven't been adding any spices but sure would like to. I have stopped eating boiled chicken and started baking it with a small amount of olive oil. So far he's tolerated that just fine.
Good luck with everything, sorry to be such a pain...

Good idea! Never thought of that! :)

I'm hoping that it becomes second nature quickly... we're off on holiday to Toronto and Niagra in a few weeks and am wondering how I'm going to manage eating out all the time without eating soya and dairy products! Guess I'll be on plain salads! lol. I don't think we have caltrate her, I'm taking calcichew, feels like you're eating chalk when you take it!

Also, you might check to see if there is a Great Harvest bread company near you. They make a variety of bread that is dairy/soy free as well as GREAT ginger snap cookies...

How is it going with your daughter? I think I am finally seeing some improvement with Greyson. He had to get his blood drawn today. Hopefully the results come back okay and I continue to nurse. I am having a hard time on this diet. Rice, chicken and orange veggies just don't cut it. I can't WAIT to eat fruit again!Good luck at the doctor tomorrow. Let me know what happens.

Hi. I think for now, I'm going to allow a bit of soybean oil. Maybe just in bread since that seems like the most time consuming thing to have to make homemade. If I don't see full results from the diet, I'll cut it out. I did go to our local grocery's health food section and found some chips and even a dark chocolate bar with no dairy or soy whatsoever. The chocolate was not very creamy but rationed in small amounts might help me with this diet. I'll let you know how it goes with the oil. It'll probably take a few weeks to sort it all out though.

leahsmom - Wednesday, 14 May
Hi, I'd love any info you have about b/f without dairy and soy. I've been researching and reading labels. My big question is whether I can have soybean oil. Some sites say yes, others no. It sure would make things easier if I could... Thanks!

treasa - Wednesday, 14 May
yeah his is an 18 right now but i have been taking him out in the sunlight. yeah i was a little scared at first and they said that everything is going to be alright. so i am not worrying to much about it.

maimai - Wednesday, 14 May
I've only been on the soy/dairy free diet for a couple of weeks and already lost quite a bit of weight since I can't eat chocolate anymore!! How are you finding sticking to the diet? Has it been easy sticking to it for 5 months? I suppose you get used to it. The only soybean oil that I have is in the extra strength calcium tablets that my doctor gave me. Since I can't have soy or dairy products my calcium intake is right down and my mum has had osteoarthritis since she was 40, so wanted to make sure I keep my calciumk intake up! Isn't it mad how soy and dairy seems to be in absoloutely everything! I never noticed before until I had to start looking at packs for ingredients!!

Very easy to tell. Breastmik poo is a little runnier then paste, bright yellow and seedy. Kekoa's was like that before three months. Now is it very watery. No seeds at all. Before the amoxicillian it was brown (from solids) and now it is almost clear with stuff in it. Really gross. It also burns coming out.

I'm hoping that this no dairy diet will in the end be good for me. Cheese and ice cream aren't good for me anyways. HAHA! Even if it is skinny cow!

(Sorry for the broken messages. I'm typing one handed - someone is eating right now. HAHA!)

darci - Saturday, 10 May
How is it going with your daughter? Did you have your appointment yet? Hope everything is going well!!!!

Bri - Saturday, 10 May
I'm so sorry. My doctor said soy was ok. We don't even know if this is what is giving him cronic diarrhea. We are just testing it. So for the next few weeks will be no diary. If it doesn't work we are going to do a stool sample and some testing. I think I can give it up for a month and we'll see. After that I'm sure if that is the problem I will be feeling much better about it and since I had already done it for a month I can for several more.

he gets restless and fussy before the bowel movement. but it doesn't happen every time, just once in a while... as far as the blood, it's more than a streak or spec but not a teaspoon full... I am going to try the bottle with each feeding... I hate doing it because it ends up wasting so much formula but I want to figure out what is going on...

darci - Thursday, 8 May
just as I say the blood is decreasing... it happens again!!!! It's not in every diaper but it has happened two times now and there is quite a lot of blood. i am worried that greyson is going to become anemic (sp). I find this kind of strange also A lady that works at the grocery store that i shop at, said a customer came in that works in a daycare center and said two of the babies in the center started having blood in their stool so they got sent home and then a week later, it started happening in the toddler section!!! it freaks me out... she is going to find out what daycare it is and I am going to call and see if they figured out what is causing it. at this point I really wish greyson would take a bottle so we can see if it clears up. it's been going on over two months now and I am so worried. the diet is horrid. i felt okay eating meat, veggies and fruit... but rice, boiled chicken and orange veggies are NO fun at all... hopefully it will hlep to figure out what is wrong with my little guy!!!

Yay! Ok, here is the website that has been my bible as far as food making goes: http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com
On that website there are instructions for the best way to cook each fruit and veggie, charts with each age range and what they can have, and some great combinations if you want to mix them.
Almost all fruits and veggies have to be cooked before you feed them to your little one. Bananas and avocados are great first foods and two of the very few that don't need to be cooked. I take half of an avocado and half of a banana, mash them together and my son loves it. If you keep the pit with the other half of the avocado and put it in a plastic bag you can do the same thing the next day. This has also been the perfect combination for my son because bananas tend to make him constipated and avocados make him poop so together it's perfect :-).
With most of the foods you will use the water that you cook them in to thin them so that any of the vitamins or minerals that steamed or boiled out into the water are added right back to them. Carrots are the exception though as they are high in nitrates and you will want to throw out the water that you boil them in and thin them with fresh water.
After I bake, steam, or boil the foods I put them in my food processor or blender and mix until they're pureed. Then just dump them in ice cube trays, the thicker items I end up using a spatula to spread them into the trays. Then wrap each tray seperately with foil or sometimes I just use the "baggies" storage bags and wrap them all together putting a bag over each end and overlapping them. If you wrap each tray seperately it doesn't take them as long to freeze solid. Once the cubes are frozen solid you just dump the cubes into ziploc freezer bags that you label with the type of food and date. They will keep for up to three months.
I use all organic foods which does make it a little more expensive but it still is cheaper than buying the jars in the store. The difference between the homemade and the jars of food is honestly incredible. I have bought some of the organic containers of food to keep on hand in case I run out of frozen or if we have to go somewhere and I can't keep the frozen cold.
I typically get the cubes out of the freezer and put them in a covered bowl the night before so it is thawed by the time I need it. My son will eat everything cold as that's what he's used to. It might change when he gets teeth though. I also tend to mix and match the cubes, pears and squash, applesauce and sweet potatoes, etc.
Ok, hope this helps now that I've written a novel. If you have any questions, let me know!

maddietx - Tuesday, 6 May
I hear ya on the conspiracy, I think SOME babies sleep through the night, and they mean 5 or 6 hours! We were doing so well and then my son just started waking up again at all hours, eeesh! I think it was easier in the beginning because I thought it would only last for a few months or so, now I don't know if we will ever sleep!

darci - Monday, 21 April
I didn't realize that there could be dairy/soy in meat! That never even occurred to me... I have seen some improvement in the blood then today he had more than just a few specs. Just when I think it's getting better or going to stop, it starts happening again.

I am going to my in-laws for a week this Thursday or Friday. I was supposed to start formula on Wednesday of next week. Do you think it would be safe for me to continue breastfeeding until I get back home that weekend? I don't feel right about putting off the formula because at this point, I KNOW it needs to happen.

kimmykat31 - Monday, 21 April
hi, thanks for letting me know about the milk/soy situation. i honestly saw improvement with my son, but the last 3 days have been hell on earth. 2 nights ago he was up every single hour crying...screaming! he is fighting sleep soooo bad. he cries for no apparent reason. i don't know what's going on...i think i need to get into the doctor, cause its starting to affect me a lot too with the lack of sleep. he just seems like he's in pain. i have been thinking its teething, but it seems to be more than that. i guess i'll make an appointment with the doc to hopefully get some answers. thanks:) i'll let you know how things go.
