My profile
Hello all, when writing this I am 26 weeks pregnant. At 21 weeks our baby’s ventricles measured 10.7 after which they sent us to a normal hospital (in the Netherlands these measurements/20-week ultrasounds are only done since January 2007 and so still quite new). this hospital measured the ventricles at 11.3mm (22 weeks) and we were sent to an Academic hospital in Amsterdam the same day as it did not look good at all. The same day we got another ultrasound and the ventricles were measured 10.6mm and 9.8mm second time. We had an amnio done and bloodtests done, all results were good, although they did discover by accident that in some of the cells the sex-chromosome is missing (which is nothing special in 95% of all cases). So we had to go for another ultrasound (24.3 week), everything looked fine except the vents were measured at 11.8 and then 10 minutes later at 11.3. We thought the worst as the measurements had increased. We had a follow up appointment the week after and the dr. told us it is mild abnormality and they consider the condition stable. Next week we will get confirmation of when our next ultrasound will be and they are thinking of doing an MRI at 30 weeks of which we are not convinced we should do. My first born son was never checked; he is now 4.5 years old and seems to be healthy.
UPDATE May 2008
We have our next u/s on 10 June 2008, by which I will be 29 weeks. I feel really nervous about it, but at the same time I realise there is not much we can do, other than sit and wait. I hope that, like it has done with many other babies, the measurements will come down. Keep you posted!
UPDATE June 2008
We went for our first ultrasound on 10 June 2008 in 5 weeks time (at 29 weeks). The vents are now measuring 12.4mm and the third ventricle is dilated too (4.2mm). Brain tissue and head all looks good and the baby is still well within the average range. Our dr. said that is too much fluid on the brain, that's why the third ventricle is visible too. I asked him if he considered this stable as it has not gone up much (measurments between 9.8mm - 11.8 up to present). He is not entirely convinced this is stable, but having said that he would have expected a lower measurement at 29 weeks. (less than our first measurment) that's why he is not convinced this should be consired as stable. So for now he thinks it can still go up or down. It could be due to a narrowing in the neck. As everything else looks good he was not worried. And we....we were relieved due to all the experiences on this board, combined with the fact the braintissue was all developing as it should do (as far as they can tell ofcourse). Our next u/s is 7 July 2008. The hospital still wants us to consider the MRI, but as we heard today you actually have to take medication to tranquilize the baby, we are not convinced if we should do it. As after birth it is way easier to do a scan, which the doctor confirmed. Our MRI is now scheduled for 20 June 2008, but we can still cancel. We had hoped the measurement would have dropped (who wouldn't) but stable (allthough not confirmed) will do for now. Keep you all posted!!!
We have cancelled the MRI which was scheduled for 20 June, our next hospital visit will be 7 July.
UPDATE July 2008
We went to hospital today (7/7/2008 - 33 weeks) and we got confirmation that everything seems to be stable. Baby is growing well and the ventricles were 12.2mm this time. The third still visible too, but the dr. says the too much fluid on the brain is the only 'thing' we can tell you and we just do not now if there will be an impact and if there would be, what it actually would be. Braintissue does not seem to be under pressure. We do not have to come in for follow up scans, they trust that our little one is stable. The head is still a little bigger but within the graph and the baby weighs almost 2200 grams (sorry do not know lbs). It has turned, yesssss!! So it seems no c-section necessary. The neurologist we spoke to last time definitely was not talking about our baby, so I will give hime a piece of mind when the baby is there (which my partner is looking forward to LOL) So we are happy and going to enjoy the rest of the remaining weeks. We also got a 3d picture and the baby looks really cute!! I only have one more week at work, so let the summer begin!! (it is raining at the moment :(() Thank you all for the support on this forum, could not have done this without you.
Last check at hospital was 21 July (35 weeks), only to check growth, blood pressure etc. They told me not to worry about the head size or the head in general that will adjust itself when giving birth. So the ventriculomegaly was just skipped like it was no longer an issue. However, the doctor, saw her for the first time, did think my tummy was not growing fast enough. "Nothing to worry about and I may not have said anything if I had seen you before, but because I haven't, I do want you to go for a scan to check if the baby is growing fast enough.....". I was annoyed at first, but I will just go on 1 August. I do not think she is right anyways (I was affraid they were going to tell me my bump had grown too fast ;)). Keep you posted!!
Update August 2008
We went for an ultrasound today (1/8) to check the growth of the baby. They measured everything there was to measure and the baby was measuring 36+3 weeks, which is what I exactly am. The baby weighs 2950 grams (approx 6.5 pounds) which is almost as much as my son weighed when he was born (39+2 weeks). They had the look at the head and we got the impression that the fluid was not really visible any more and the ventricles looked a lot smaller. The head size which was 3 weeks a head is now measuring exactly the same as everything else. We have the feeling that this baby is doing really well and we really want to meet the little baby.
20 August 2008 (20-08-2008!!!) Baby Benjamin is born. Our little boy is born at 00.42 and he was doing great from the very first start. Benjamin and myself had to stay in hospital overnight en dad had to go home. They had several checks scheduled the next day and the outcome of those would be leading for the follow up actions (so we had no clue when we could go home....) They have checked his genitals extensively because of the 45X, 46XY mozaicism. Everything looks good, he is missing a tiny part of his foreskin, but everything else looks really good. We do have to come in 6 weeks so they can check his hormones. They made an scan of his head....which was the last test....it was nerv wrecking. After they did lots of images of his brain (poor thing) and looked at them in details (without telling us what they were looking at.....arghhhh) they told us "he just has a large ventricle system, not enlarged, therefore we consider him healthy and no follow ups are needed. We bursted into tears of relief. We are so happy that everything appears ok!!! I will keep this forum updated on his progression, so future moms may have something to hang on to. Thanks all and good luck to those who have not given birth yet!!! Big kiss for all of you on here :))
Update September 2008
Today (4 September 2008) we had a house visit of a nurse (standard practice in the Netherlands), who weighed Benjamin and had another look at him. He is growing as he should do and he does everything according to the book. She had not opened his file yet and the first comment she made (without really knowing how proud it made me feel) "what a perfect little boy and he has such a perfect shaped head".....So I told her the story and she was in disbelieve too. So everyting is still going as it should do :))
Update October 2008
Today (14 October 2008) Benjamin got his 2 months check. He is now 57 cm and weighs almost 4800 grams. His head circ. is 39,2 cm. All seems to be within the curves. He is doing everything he should do and was marked as "very strong" as he is very capable of lifting his head. Does not want to do it for long as it is still a bit heavy, I guess. We do need to watch the back of his head and make sure we turn his head when he is a sleep as he does not seem to do this himself, but again this has nothing to do with the ventriculomegaly. He seems to be a happy and healthy baby.
On 23 October 2008 we got the results back regarding the possible impact the 45X,46xy (discovered by coincidence) may have on Benjamin's hormone production. Apparently his male hormone production is perfect. So again another positive result. All the things they thought/discovered during my pregnancy seem to be ok. We are so happy and so is Benjamin, he is smiling more and more each day also his baby speech is improving everyday :))
Too too cute for words!
Hope you and Benjamin are doing well?
Dawson is getting big and funny, will post more up to date photo's soon.
