Friday, 25 Jan Cali! Hey. The study was done by Kaiser Permanente. I read it, but also the nurse in childbirth talked about it. The women who were at higher risk drank 2+ cups a day, daily, and BTW- you can't have a miscarriage, you are 33 weeks! Preterm baby is the term...LOL...tell her that! However, the study also showed that the caffeine caused a decrease in the amount of blood flow to the baby, so go easy, but one cup is NOT going to hurt the baby! LiseyB -
Thursday, 24 Jan They say that 3 instants or one real coffee a day is fine. I have a weak instant about every two days because I haven't quite been able to kick it.
Sounds like you need to put the invisible ear plugs in when your around her. Just smile and think how miserable she must be to be so judgemental and critical all the time. srm31 -
Thursday, 24 Jan My doc said that it's safe to have up to 330 milligrams of caffeine per day. I think thats like one grande Starbucks (they have a menu now with how much caffeine is in all their drinks so you can check) But it does act as a diuretic and you'll need to drink more water or other fluids when drinking caffeine. One cup of coffee a day is fine (you can even put milk in it!). Your mom is acting crrrazy ! Ignore and sip away !!!! nicci -

Thursday, 24 Jan Having some caffeine is fine. I even read in the what to expect when you're expecting book that you can have a cup of coffee a day. Sorry your mom is being so annoying!!! bellybumbles -
Thursday, 24 Jan I see a ton of people already commented, but i had to leave a msg and let you know i think your mom is being a b*tch! How dare she say that? My doctor actually told me that if I really want a cup of coffee or a soda, that it was fine. This was in the begining when I was doing anything to avoid caffein (only to find out the hot choc i was drinking had as much as my coffee, lol)...but they said the studies aren't conclusive and that while it is better to avoid caffien overloads, a cup a day most likely won't cause any harm. I've actually had a cappacino on occasion and they have espresso (gotta fill the cravings right?)-the doc said at this stage that's fine too. Don't worry about it, and if you want to ask a doctor i posted a link yesterday (its my new fav thing to do regarding being pregnant...www.rwjobgyn.org/ask and a doctor will give you advice on the situation - you don't have to be a patient). Tell your mom to get a life :) bellylove -
Thursday, 24 Jan My doctor tells me that a baby will be ok if the mother consumes up to three cups of coffee a day, he says he suggests no more than two, but to play it safe only have one. since i've found out i was pregnant i've had a cup or two a day and my baby boy is growing big and strong. a friend of mine who is also 32wks told me her doctor admitted she didn't even give up coffee while she was pregnant! i'm sorry your mom made you feel that way because you're doing absolutely nothing wrong. hang in there. i know unwanted advice and can be the worst! it's better that we only trust professionals and not those who claim to be 'experienced.' Thursday, 24 Jan You and your baby are going to be fine. I drink one cup of coffee a day....and I did with my son as well. Your mom stressing you out is probably more harmful than that one cup of coffee. Take care and try not to stress. crazyeights -
Thursday, 24 Jan You will be just fine. One cup of coffee isn't going to hurt you or your little one. I drink a glass of pop a day. I'm a cola addict!! Don't worry. Our mom's came from a totally different era. They worry about a lot more than we've ever had to. flgrl -

Thursday, 24 Jan I read a scientific study a while back published in a medical journal that looked at the risks of caffeine after 20 weeks of pregnancy and the risk of pre-term birth and low birth weight. They found no difference between the group that drank moderate amounts of caffeine and a group that avoided caffeine. Therefore they concluded that in the later stages of pregnancy moderate caffeine intake posed no risk. On a personal note, I'm not a coffee drinker but I do like a cup of tea. I avoided caffeine during the first trimester but I do allow myself 2-3 cups of tea a day now (I'm 32 weeks). Keep in mind also that chocolate also has caffeine in it and I've munched on that my entire pregnancy. I would say if you want the occasional cuppa just go for it! Good Luck! peanutmommie -
Thursday, 24 Jan i saw that on the news... but i since i hit the 2nd trimester i drink diet coke every single day. your baby is fine! what a study to release to the most paranoid people on the planet: soon to be mommy's! no worries, your Anthony will be perfect. thesweetestthing -

Thursday, 24 Jan We (hubby and I) watch the abc and nbc news every night. There is a new study that says a cup of coffee in the first trimester can make miscarriage chances greater. A Doc Nbc interviewed said said they tell their patients not to have more than one cup a day. Nbc reported details and facts,(including they were talking about FIRST trimester, and more than a cup), but abc just reported that there is now a definitive study that caffeine can greatly (50%) increase miscarriage rates, and did not specify trimester or amt. I drink one cup of coffee a day, but did not in the first trimester. Abc news has the tendency to leave out details that are important to stories. You are fine!! Good luck. smz001 -
Thursday, 24 Jan Do not stress. I also have one nice big cup of coffee every morning. I checked with my gynae right at the beginning of my pregnancy and she told me anything in moderation is fine. Its when u drink 8 - 10 cups a day that your baby is at risk of being born with a low birth weight. There are so many myths about pregnancy, it can drive a person to insanity. With my first pregnancy I ended up listening to every1 and this time I decided people just make u go mad with all the advice. Do what u comfortable with and dont listen to any1 unless your midwife or gynae. I hope that helps mummysteph -
Thursday, 24 Jan I read on one of our official baby sites in the uk that you can have up to 4 cups of coffee a day and up to 6 cups of tea. There are people who say that it is best for baby not to. but those no.s are hte offical line in hte uk. Your mum sounds like a worryer! Proverbs31mama -
Thursday, 24 Jan even docs will tell you, a cup of coffee a day wont hurt your baby at all. And at 33 weeks you defenitly have nothing to worry about. UGH..isnt it irritating when people try to tell you how to treat your own pregnancy?? Marchbaby08 -
Thursday, 24 Jan You are fine!! I am not a heavy caffeine drinker but when I am craving a cappuccino (mind you I put about 6 big spoonfulls of sugar in it as well) or a mt. dew I don't hold back! Not to mention I practically live off chocolate! It's too bad that your mother is making you so nervous! I am 22 and perfectly healthy and I have had checkups at least every 5 weeks throughout my entire pregnancy so it has nothing to do with age! luvlyladybump -
Thursday, 24 Jan I don't know What I would do if I couldn't have coffee!! I have about a cup about every other day, depending on what I need to do and I haven't had ne problems. You've made it this far, I don't think coffee or caffiene would do NE thing at this point, as long as u don't overdo it.I'm pretty sure it's only a caution in the 1st months. Just let it roll off, what u Don't need is unwanted Stress, stress is def something that is Not healthy! Don't worry girl, u'll have a healthy baby :) jessy613 -
Thursday, 24 Jan my mom told me that she drank tons of coffee every single day of her pregnancies all the way up until she delivered, and nothing happend, so i would tell your mom to relax and stop stressing you out..u are not going to lose your baby alison3773 -
Thursday, 24 Jan One cup of coffee is not going to hurt you or your baby. When I got pregnant I was drinking over 48oz of coffee a day plus 2-3 no-doz ( I know, talk about unhealthy!) Of course I stopped, but my doctor told me that drinking 16oz of coffee a day is perfectly fine and that the stress of quitting cold turkey could actually put more stress on my baby. I have since then cut back to one 8oz cup on the days I work (3 days a week) and my doctors (along with other things I have read) have assured me that there is nothing wrong with a little caffine during pregnancy. Thursday, 24 Jan I asked my OB today about it and he said that the most concern is in the first tri. He said have 12 oz or less of coffee a day, some tea and a bit of chocolate here and there are fine. I have not been drinking much loaded coffee this time-makes me sick. collsbaby -
Monday, 14 Jan That sounds so scary! I'm sorry to hear it. I'd say heck with the on-call doc and go into emergency just to give you peace of mind! Good luck!! mommylaurie -
Monday, 14 Jan Cali- That pop could have been your ribs separating from your sternum. They are just held by cartlidge, and with all the hormones our bodies are making, it makes it easy to separate. If you are really worried, tell the dr. that you are having a decrease in baby movements and would like them to check him.
