BIRTH STORY

I went to the hospital on Monday 3rd March to be induced and was given 2 doses to soften the servix. Nothing much happened that day but by the teusday morning my cervix had dialated enough for them to break my waters. That was a very painful procedure! There was no sign of contractions so I had to go on the drip that afternoon to start my contractions and by about 5 pm they had started. I didnt want any painkillers except for gas and air. My contractions got really painfull later that night and it felt like i needed to push so the midwife checked to see how dialated I was. It turns out I was only two cm dialated. That was a very disshartening moment and that is when I decided I wanted some painkillers. I was told that the baby had become stuck and could not be born naturally and I needed an emergency C-section, this was terrifying but my husband and the medical staff where brilliant and put me a ease. at 00.29am wednesday morning Thomas Harvey was born and the c-section was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I stayed in the hospital for five days and came home on the friday. He is so delightfull and we are all in love with him and cannot imagine life without him, the diabetes and the difficult labour does not even matter any more and it is nearly forgoten. Good luck to all of you still wating for your babies they will soon be here!

I forgot to say that he weighed 8lb 8oz. The midwives all bet that he weighed about 10lb ! but I was carrying a lot of water.

My baby is two weeks old now and I cannot believe how quickly time is flying by. I am still recovering from the c-section which is a pain when you have other children to look after. We are managing to get the hang of breast feeding and my nipples are not as sore as they where a few days ago. That is a relief because I really want to breast feed exclusively for six months. I will be going back to work so I will introduce formula as well as breast feed at this point i think, although nothing works out like you plan.

Hey ya! It is really surprising how after a week you get so used to the readings and insulin that its not a big deal any more. Good luck with it all. Stay in touch.

Hi I noticed your comments re GD.

I too had the same scare last week and had further tests thankfully they came back all clear.

I am measuring 3 weeks bigger than I should be so I'm sure my baby will be early! The midwife doesnt seem to concered though.

Just wanted to wish you well.

Hi ya MummySteph, I was diagnosed with GD 14 days ago! I saw a dietician /nutritionist,and diabetes educator about it - Info overload. I then spent 4 days in hospital getting info on injecting insulin and doses. Their advice will depend on an assessment of your existing diet choices and patterns. But you will get more intensive care now through the rest of your pregnancy and attitides about it in hospital are changing - if bub/you are healthy the docs will let women go to 40 weeks. In the past everyone was delivered at 38 weeks just becaue they had GD! I felt terrible when I found out - but am getting used to it now. The thing is - some women have no control over it even with the best diet and exercise program in the world - so dont blame yourself. I was in the healthy weight range and good diet before I got pregnant, and still need insulin. We now believe my mum had it in two pregancies and didnt even know it! There is a genetic link which explains why people some get it and some dont . It doesnt gaurentee a big baby or complications - but now that we know we can just do the best we can and should have as healthy birth and bub as anyone without it. It also shows us that we are more susceptible to developing type 2 later in life so we can work towards trying to prevent this. Think of all of the people who walk around with Type 2 diabetes and dont even know it- and that is permanent, ours is temporary! The other thing is it should be completely gone in 8-10 weeks when that silly baby protecting/nourishing placenta comes out! We cant help it - if our placentas put our babies first! See if you can see another midwife - one who is more educated about it. There is nothing worse than a health care professional who judges and make you feel like sh*@t. LOL I was lucky - my midwife had a babyl ast year and got GD as well so she has been great. You will feel better with some time to process it. And your bub will be fine as well. Let me know if I can help you in any way X

don't worry about the diabetes. I've had it with both my pregnancies and really it's nothing. Maybe a bigger baby your dr. will watch that carefully. hang in there we are almost there.

Awww...hang in there girl. I get my results back for that test today...My SIL was DX with Gest. Diabetes and all was fine for both her and the baby, she did have to watch what she ate though. You have made it so far! YOU CAN DO IT! YEA!!!

Don't feel so bad. It's actually quite common for some woment to get gestational diabetes. Usually it resides after birth. Just be sure to watch your diet after baby is born, because with a few women after years have passed, they end up having type 2 diabetes. But most of my patients that had it while pregnant no longer have it. On the bright side you will surely have a big healthy baby :) Hope this helps a little.

for the heart burn i learned a technique in prenatal yoga. it sounds dumb but it works for me sometimes. u stick ur tounge out curl it up and breathe in through ur tounge then close ur mouth and breathe out thru ur nose. the cool air u breathe in is supposed to cool down ur insides. likei said it sounds dumb but it is worth a try!!
