Monday, 5 May I went to the doctor today, the perinatoligist says I have gestational diabetes and sent me to get baseline labwork to check for pre-eclampsia. While there I also recieved a lovely orange jug to pee in for the next 24 hours. I was right when I told my husband I thought they were paying alot of attention to the baby's heart on the last ultrasound. The doc says there is a small amount of fluid around the baby's heart but he doesn't seem concerned with it right now. He says I have a skinny baby and this one won't be anywhere near the 8 pounds 4 ounces my last weighed. I am scheduled for an another ultrasound in 3 weeks, my midwife appts will continue to be weekly and every other week I will have non stress tests. I am also awaiting a call from the diabetes clinic at the hospital to meet with a dietician for nutritional counseling. My husband went with me today and now undersands how strict my bedrest is supposed to be. I think when the perinatoligist went and got the wheelchair for me that must have done it. I am allowed to lay or sit but no walking or driving. Hubby has now offered to get up my 7 year old and get him off to school and is going to go in late on Mondays to take me to the doctor! I am so much less stressed than last week, even though I found out I do have GD. I can easily sacrifice 10 weeks of food I love for the health of my little boy.

Tuesday, 29 April Wow, 3 lbs 9 oz, my lil peanut is measuring 2 pounds 11 oz. I couldn't imagine being in your shoes and having to be working. Softening of the cervix is what allows the baby's head to drop down lower in the pelvis, it is also one of the last thing to happen before dialation. Watch out for lots of pelvic pressure. I hope you can hang in there for a few more weeks. Well time to look out for the school bus, catch you later. Take care! blessed-in-atl -
Tuesday, 29 April You haven't been on in a few days, I hope that tiny bit of a cervix you have left is still holding on!
I had an appt yesterday. It was with the perinatologist but he never showed so the ultrasound tech did the scan and said the baby's abdomen is measuring 2 and a half weeks behind, the baby has dropped to the 3rd percentile and my cervix has dropped from 24 mm to 18 mm in the last 2 weeks so scoot over and make some room cuz now I am on complete bedrest too. I told a nurse I would see them on Monday at my next appt and she said, "Oh you will be hearing from us way before then" great, now I am a worried mess!Meanwhile I have to figure out what to do with getting my 7 year old off to school. I told him he is gonna have to eat the school food the rest of the year cuz I can't get up to make his lunch every morning and I have asked the bus driver for a premission slip that will allow him to walk home from the bus stop so I don't have to be sitting there waiting on him but I am not comfortable with him being there waiting for the bus without me in the morning so I drove him there and just reclined my car seat all the way back while waiting on the bus. How in the world do you do it with 3 kids? Ahhhhhhhh, I feel a little better, always good to vent! nancy26 -
Wednesday, 23 April Hi honey, thank you so much for your message, I thought I was literally losing my mind there for a second, I just wanted to fall over and give up. I spoke to a Doctor here (she's from Croatia) who always has all sorts of natural remedies up her sleeve, and am currently on a mixture of lemon juice and honey (drunk straight), which is helping enough where I manage to get some sleep... although the abdominal muscles are still a total killer... they BURN (ironically, if baby is lying with his back to my front it's like I squash him and it BURNS long the shape of his back) lol. Ah well. Thank you thank you thank you. I can't tell you what it meant to me when I logged on here and saw I was inundated with supportive messages again. I don't think I'm ever going to leave this site! Hope all is well with you! JENNIFERSD -
Saturday, 19 April Hi, go to the hospital just to check it out. I called the Dr last week because I was feeling some pressure. He sent me straight to the specialist who found out that my cervix was 16mm. They sent me right over to the hospital to check for contractions. Everything was ok for now but they were way more worried than I was. So, dont take any chances Cece-Y -
Wednesday, 16 April Hey how are you doing? Id just nip to the hospital and make sure everything is ok....being on bed rest drives you crazy mad also, any pain or different feeling and I worry, but that's not good for you or baby, even if it's just to put your mind at rest it's worth going xx Cece-Y -

Wednesday, 16 April Sounds like you are having contraction if your whole uterus is hardening. I was in L&D at 28 weeks b/c I was dilated 1cm and soft and I also had a previous preterm delivery. Did they put you on bed rest or meds for contractions? If you are having 4 or more contractions in an hour at this point, I would get checked out. Actually, if you are worried about it I would go anyway. I did. Always better to be safe than sorry and the more time you can buy with baby inside, the better. Good luck! mommymathews -
Wednesday, 16 April Never feel ashamed to go get checked, better safe than sorry. That's what my doctor always tells me. With my first daughter I had painless contractions and had dilated to 5cm. With this pregnancy when I was 23 weeks I had the same thing and I went in just to check and was 1cm and 50% effaced. I had to be admitted. Think about this way if you go in and nothing is wrong then great, at least you tried...but if you go in and labor is stopped then you've saved your baby lots of time in the NICU! Hope this helps! Good luck!! blessed-in-atl -
Monday, 14 April 4 mm wow. Hang in there. I have another ultrasound with the periontoligist in 2 weeks, the last one was just with the ultrasound tech as when the midwife checked me she said baby's head was way down there so she sent me right to ultrasound. I am hoping to make it until atleast 34 weeks. I hope all goes well with you. Keep me posted! Cece-Y -
Sunday, 13 April Hey honey, great news your stable for the time being, week 26 aint bad either, just try and hang in there for another few weeks xxxxxxx Carmione -
Tuesday, 8 April I just looked at a ruler...are you on bed rest darling?? That's no length at all. Curious- are you in the states or over seas? I find that here in the US the dr's are a little more liberal with hormone supplements and cerclages to prevent pre term. My cervix is like mush and resembles the end of a "whoopi cushion" nothing to its fibers to keep the baby put after a certain weight. Honestly I was terrified about all of the complications listed for the procedure, but compared to having to endure another loss I was/am willing to do whatever I can to try and prevent another preterm labor. Monday, 7 April Hello,
They wouldn't put a cerclage on me either (too late and too risky) in fact a lot of studies don't show that it helps that much. It would have been a good piece of mind. The good news is that if a baby is born after 24 weeks, there is a good chance of survival. After 28 weeks, the chances are very good to have a healthy baby. Please keep me psoted. nancy26 -
Monday, 7 April lol sorry about that, I'm so fixated on my own little one that they're all he and him at the moment for ease of reference LOL. Congrats on your lil girl!
It should be pretty easy to find out - the UK is rather on-the-ball with keeping their info handy and on the internet... and I'm sure it wouldn't work too differently to here... But you're right, find out what the situation is when they're back from hols and figure it out from there.
Congrats again and good luck! nancy26 -
Monday, 7 April Heya nickijane... :) No worries man... where are you again? are you in the states or the UK? Can check out the law... but I know that most companies will only give you "x" number of sick days before they make it unpaid sick leave, which is a nightmare... I'm not sure if that's the way you should work it, depending on where you are, but it's definitely the way things work here... Maybe you should just take your chances and hand it in... they certainly should not be able to affect your maternity leave if you have him earlier.... i.e. they can't hold you to your original estimation of due date if you have him early... once you've had him, you're a mother, and therefore on maternity leave :P

Monday, 7 April Hey hon - saw your comment re maternity leave, and thought I'd pop in and say hi, congratulations, and don't panic. Call your HR department and figure it out, but what we do here is you fill in the form according to your EDD, together with how many weeks prior to the birth you'll be taking off as part of your maternity leave (here we have to take 4, company policy). Then, if you go early (like I think I might), the company just adjusts it to have your maternity leave start early/immediately, and you carry on from there... the catch is of course trying ot get all the work done so if you DO go early, it's all sorted... so far today I've spent more time on this site than at work, technically lol. Monday, 7 April Hi, I was just reading through the bedrest forum and went to your profile and saw that we have the same due date. My Dr. put me on "modified" activity about 8 weeks ago due to a somewhat short cervix (about 3.2cm). I was hoping they would put in a cerclage put they would not. Now I am down to 2.8 with some funneling. As of 2 days ago, the Dr. put me on moderate bedrest (laying down the majority of the day) and I go back in 2 weeks for a new measurement. Do you have a cerclage in place? horizontalmama -
Friday, 4 April I had a leep done about 6 years ago, so that is probably what is causing my cervix issues! Last time it measured 2.5cm, but has been as short as 1.3. The funneling gets bigger and smaller each time, we can actually see it change on the ultrasound, though yesterday there was no funneling. I have already had the 2 steroid shots for the lung development (got those at 26 weeks when all of this started) and have since been getting progesterone shots once a week. I am also on nifedipine to stop contractions (that I didn't think I was having anyway!) I just want to keep it cooking! horizontalmama -
Friday, 4 April Hi, I am in the same boat as you, just started shortening and funneling at 26 weeks. I am almost 29 weeks now, I see the doc 2/week, and last visit I was 2.5 with no funneling. Dr. said if it keeps shortening they will put me in the hospital. I am on nifedipine, progesterone, and already had the steroid shots. All we can do is make sure to take it easy and keep the baby cooking! Did you have complications with your other kids? I had my daughter at 35 weeks, was only on bed rest for 3 weeks for shortened cervix, no funneling that time, but my water did break. She was fine, over six pounds, and came home with us. I just hope to make it that far this time! It is hard for me to realize that 40 weeks is actually full term since I had her at 35 and she is just fine!
Good luck, keep me posted! Cece-Y -
Thursday, 3 April Hi Nicki...best of luck to you, keep me updated on how you are. I too have taken to my bed, 2 weeks ago my cervix was funnelling, I went to bed for the week, and the following week it had closed up, so all I can think is that it de-stresses me being in bed, and it must of helped last time, so that's were i'm staying again this time!! Hopefully we can keep on going for a good few weeks yet, the more weeks we can rack up the better hey? speak soon and good luck:-) xxx Cece-Y -
Thursday, 3 April Hi there, I was wondering how you are doing now? I am in a similar situation to yourself, 23 weeks tomorrow, cervix was funneled, then not and now is again, plus my cervix is now shortening. I too am on pesseries and if I have shortened more next week they will give me some different pesseries and steriods. I have taken myself off to bed and even though the doctor says i'm not an invalid, I feel worried everytime I move. What care plan have the doctors given you and how are you feeling? I hope all goes well for you :-) socalgal -
Thursday, 3 April So glad you have stopped funneling. I too read that there is no evidence that bed rest works and it freaked me out at first. I think that, combined with the fact that my doctor decided not to give me a cerclage had me going nuts the first week or two of bedrest. But once I started to gain confidence in my body and felt that everything would be okay, bed rest got a million times easier. It's not so bad if you feel that it is working and your baby is going to be okay. I hope you gradually gain confidence as well. Hang in there! nikolgr1 -
