Sunday, 29 June Oh my! How adorable. She is getting so big . I love those chubby cheeks. She is too cute. I'm not sure how much Jeffrey weighs. we go to the dr next month, I'll have to try and weigh him here at home. I know he's growing though, getting heavy. His sleeping is much better and not fussy like he used to be. He smiles alot and laughs outloud. it is so cute. They sure do grow fast, don't they. margysd -
Saturday, 28 June I was just checking out your pictures. Emma is beautiful. I would love to know how you were able to deliver her without pain relief. I tried so hard and even got a doula with the birth of Elsa, and needed an epidural 2-hours before delivery because of the pain. I so think that each birth is different, so hopefully on our next baby I can go drug free. havefaith -

Saturday, 14 June Hi there, I'm glad to hear there isn't anything serious wrong with Emma. Sounds like she is doing well as far as weight gain. I can sympathize with you and being lonely. You are so lucky to have your mom still, my mom passed away 5 years ago and I miss her more then ever now. I feel the exact way you say you do. I get so lonely and with the fussiness it makes it worse. I do see where Jeffrey seems to be growing out of some of it (thank God) but he's still a handfull and my husband is very seldom around to help or just keep me company. My girls do drop over from time to time and Jeffrey just loves them. He smiles and laughs when they talk to him. Hang in there and take care, you aren't alone.

Tuesday, 3 June I read your comment on another page and just wanted to mention something to you. I of course don't know your story or what you've tried but with my son his extreme screaming was always gas pains. I have always breastfed and it was the dairy in my diet that was making him so gassy. I have read about a ton of other little ones on here with the same thing in breastmilk and formula. If you're formula feeding definitely try a soy brand or one that is specifically engineered towards colic. I have a hard time with the diagnosis of colic as I always feel like there has to be a reason, sorry, not trying to make this worse for you. Does your little one pass a lot of gas or have really hard stools? It's so hard to hear your baby cry, I'm so sorry and I hope you're able to figure out what's causing this!!! teresa08 -
Tuesday, 3 June I received this email today and thought you might be interested in reading it.
Could it be Colic? The Rule of Three
How to gauge whether your newborn is simply fussy or has joined the ranks of the colicky.
So what happened to that sweet, sleepy baby you brought home from the hospital just a few weeks ago? Has he been replaced by an inconsolable crying machine whose wails never seem to end? You may just have got a case of the colic on your hands (or in the crib). Here's how to gauge whether your cranky newborn has ratched it up a notch (or seven!) and joined the ranks of the colicky:
His crying spells are severe and persistent — he's not so much crying as screaming.
He's very active, even frantic; he won't settle down to sleep or eat no matter what you try.
He can cry for two or three hours straight. And the worst outbursts occur in the late afternoon and evening. And they happen pretty much every day — you never get a break!
The true definition of colic follows the rule of threes: unexplained crying that begins sometime after the third week, lasts for at least three hours each day, occurs on more than three days per week, and continues for at least three weeks. The good news is that it usually subsides by three months (there's that magic three again), but that's certainly no consolation to you right now as you try to just get through yet another afternoon of unending high-pitched wails.
Is there anything you can do to survive the next few months of colic with some semblance of sanity? Luckily, there is. The first step is to stay calm (easier said than done, certainly, but it can be done with some willpower). The second is to remember that the crying isn't your fault, and it won't last forever. Then try some of these potential tear-reducing strategies:
AdvertisementCarry him for at least a few hours every day, in your arms or in a sling or front carrier (during the crying jags, and at other times too). Most babies enjoy being walked or swayed.
Ban smoking around your baby. There are countless reasons to keep tobacco smoke out of your home; one is that it can reduce colicky crying.
Ask your pediatrician about trying simethicone drops (such as Mylicon); these can alleviate gas, which causes pain and crying in some babies.
Shut out excess stimuli by keeping your home quiet and dimly litl. One colic-cause theory is that newborns lack the ability to block out the overwhelming cacophony of sounds, sights, and smells that surround them. Rhythmic sounds (the hum of a humidifier or a soothing recording of waterfalls) and movements (a spell in the swing or stroller) may also help.
Take breaks, and enlist support from your partner, mother, friend, or a babysitter. If you're on your own and at the end of your rope, leave your baby safely in his crib or bassinet while you flee to another room for a minute or two. While it's always best to respond promptly to your little one's screams (after all, it's his only way of communicating with you), a brief escape may be healthier for both of you teresa08 -
Monday, 2 June Hey. you mentioned vacuuming and I just thought have you tried running the vacuum to see if the sound settles her down any. When they cry like that you get to where you'll try anything. I know it's hard but try not to worry too much. Are you getting any rest. Take care teresa08 -
Monday, 2 June Aww. I feel so bad for her and you. Poor baby. I hate to see them cry like that and you feel so helpless..I hope it is just colic and and something she will grow out of. Have you tried any of the mylecon or gripe water. How are her bowel movements? Jeffrey wasn't pooping every day at first and we had to use suppositories or apple juice. His burps and gas sounded like a grown man and also sounded painful for such a little guy. Now he goes about once a day but still has terrible gas at times. I keep hearing 3 months is the magical number and alot of babies grow out of the colic a that point. I wonder now what his problem really is and does he really need the zantac and other medication for reflux. We went to the dr the other day and we always have a hundred questions, by the time we leave his waiting room is packed. I know we have probably driven the pediatrician crazy with all of my calls to him. Steve says the dr is probably sorry he ever took Jeffrey as a patient. LOL....Jeffrey seems to be settling down some. I am trying to stretch out the time between feedings. I feed him most of the time but occasionally his father feeds him and I have to keep reminding him that he has to finish the feeding. He'll give him 2 ounces and then Jeffrey is temporarily satisfied or falls asleep so he just stops feeding him and a short time later he's hungry again. He's still not on much of a schedule. Sometimes he sleeps 3 or 4 hours at the most but I can't depend on that because it's only a night here and there. He loves the swing and will usually settle down and sleep in that but I hate putting him in it all the time, makes me feel like a bad mother for some reason.
I hope Emma is ok, Let me know how she is doing. Take care teresa08 -
Sunday, 1 June Jeffrey is still on the Nutramigen and I also noticed his stools are very loose but didn't occur to me until you mentioned it that maybe it's the formula. I know he's spitting up less and still has gas but doesn't seem to be as much as it was before so i'm not sure if the medication has helped or the formula but I was thinking I may try to give him some of the other formula again just to see if it makes a difference. I had a problem with him where he would get up in the middle of the night to eat and then I couldn't get him back to sleep, that drove me crazy. Don't feel bad I was feeling the same way like I was a terrible mother, seemed like I didn't have enough milk to exclusively breasfeed and he was always fussy and gassy. I would just like to get him on some kind of schedule. Have you been able to get out any without the baby. Take care

Saturday, 31 May Jeffrey went for his 2 month checkup Wednesday and received 3 shots. He did really well. The dr did tell us to start giving him 1 tab of cereal for every two ounces of formula at each feeding but I think that is a bit too much so we decided to start off with his bedtime bottle and see how that goes. He also said if the ceral constipates him we could give him some stage 1 prunes. He is growing so fast. He has outgrown so many of his clothes already. He weighed 12 1/2 lbs wednesday but he still doesn't go that long between most feedings so i'm trying to stretch the time out between feedings. Take care

Sunday, 25 May Jeffrey is on absolutely no schedule at all. I wish he was but we are having the same problem that you have with Emma. I feed Jeffrey and finally get him to lay down and next thing I know he's up and crying and I'm constantly trying to figure out whats wrong with him. I hold him and next thing I know it's time to eat again I feel like I never get a break. Thank God for this swing, he will sit in it for a while occasionally and give me a bit of a break. My older children were not like this either so i'm at a loss as to what I should do for him. Take care margysd -
Saturday, 24 May Thanks for sharing your birth story with me. teresa08 -
Saturday, 24 May Hi there. It's funny, Jeffrey is doing the exact same thing as Emma. I go crazy sometimes trying to figure out what to do. I am still breastfeeding some and supplementing with formula. He is still on Nutramigen. I asked the doctor recently about him always seem to be starving. I feed him and he lays down for an average of 20 to 45 minutes and he's back up and seems to be hungry. The dr says just give him the pacifier. He says a 12 lb baby should eat about 3 1/2 ounces each feeding. Where are you getting the Nutramigen from, it sure is expensive. Take care margysd -
Friday, 23 May I sure will let you know how things go. I think that it is fascinating how they each have their own personalities. When you went into labor at 37 weeks, I was wondering if you had any warnings or premonitions? i feel the same every day. margysd -
Wednesday, 21 May Hey, Congrats on having your baby girl. Must be really exciting. I am very much looking forward to having my girl. I am 37 weeks today and counting down the days until I give birth. I will look forward to posting pictures and my birth story. Take care. munkobaby -

She is too cute. She is beautiful and looks so alert in her one month old picture. Take care teresa08 -
Friday, 9 May We are also trying nutramigen and I think the same thing, sometimes Jeffrey seems to be better and other times he's not. Other then the lack of sleep and being exhausted, motherhood in my 40's is wonderful. havefaith -

Sunday, 4 May Thought I'd check and see how you and Emma are doing. We've had a hard time finding a formula that Jeffrey could tolerate. I'm still breastfeeding but am supplementing with formula. I think we've finally found one and he's improving. Hope all is well with you. Take care Munkobaby -
