My Story so far....

We werent trying for another baby but sometimes fate has other ideas. We have always wanted one more but the timing never seemed right to take time off from work etc

Well i did a test when i was a week late and much to my shock it was positive!! I was totally in shock and my fiance was over the moon! He has been asking for about 3 years when we were going to have another one and i was sitting on the fence. I already have a 14 year old son and an 8 year old daughter so to start again was scary.

We told the kids a week after we found out as i needed time to wrap my own head around the good news and they were ecstatic! After a trip to the Dr we decided to tell our family and friends. I figure if something bad was to happen then we would need our friends and family support so no point keeping the good news a secret while it was good news.

Everyone was shocked but very happy for us.

I then proceeded to have "all day" sickness from the day after i found out until about week 14 - 15 weeks. I work full time so i found this a little hard as i was never sick with my other two. The busy period leading into Christmas was hard as i felt so awful but i never took a single day off from morning sickness. I dont have anyone to fill in for me if im off anyway so that was incentive to go in.

I found brushing my teeth the hardest part of the day as it always (and still does at 20 weeks!) make me gag and sometime throw up.

I had the down syndrome test at around 12 1/2 weeks and the result was very low. The measurement of the neck was only 1cm (which is meant to be very low) and combined with the blood test the chance of down syndrome is 1 in over 10,000. I am very pleased with this result. I didnt have a feeling anything was wrong anyway but it is always nice to hear thigns are going well.

The baby was snuggled right up against my uterus so the picture came out looking like a skinned rabbit! I still love it to pieces but it is weird looking. Not sure what i was expecting as i have never had a 3D scan before.

I had my 18 week ultrasound at 19 weeks and the technician doing the scan was awful. She had no personality and made me feel depressed! It was great to see the baby kicking around and it kept kickinng where she had the doppler thing. My mum kept trying to see what sex it was but we are not finding out. We want the suprise when bub is born and we have one of each so it really doesnt matter what this one is. I think dad secretly has high hopes for a boy but will be happy with another daughter.

I have been able to feel the baby kick since about 16 weeks which is awsome.. It is the best part of being pregnant. It is getting stronger and my daughter was the first to feel it. Dad felt it for the 1st time this morning. (20 weeks tomorrow) It always starts kicking right after i wake up. I can get up through the night to pee (4 times last night not including before i went to bed!) and it stays asleep. As soon as my alarm goes off and i am awake it starts like clockwork.

I have started collecting baby things. I have laybyed my pram and carseat and have picked up a few things along the way. We have to renovate the garage into another room for my 14 year old son then we can get the baby's room ready. Until then i have nowhere to store anything.

All is well though, baby is healthy and all checkups are normal so i am very happy and content.

20 weeks 1 day

I had a work coaching sessionb that went all day today. The baby was kicking me ALL day long. Not more than 1/2 an hour passed where it didnt move. It did make it a little hard to concertrate on the coaching as i was enjoying the movement so much. I cant believe how much stronger the baby is in just a short time. I also noticed yesterday that my stomach has become really hard. It is much more comfortable as before my lower tummy didnt like any pressure on it fromm pants, undies etc. Now it is much firmer i am a lot more comfortable. I ahve only gained 3kg which is exactly on target. I only gained 1kg by 14 weeks and gave myself 3kg by 20 weeks. I now have 6kg i cann gain between 20 and 30 weeks. This is to be on track to only gain the minimum weight of about 12kg the whole pregnancy. After gaining 19kg with my son and 23kg with my daughter i am determined to not go there again. It is way too hard to lose after. And having a big belly makes you feel large enough. I am very proud of myself for doing so well. I have been eating constantly though and only really eating fresh veges and fruit and loads of water.

21 weeks and 2 days

This week i have really popped out. I can almost feel my stomach expanding! I have been so hungry too. Nothing seems to keep me full for more than 1/2 an hour, Im ok until lunchtime then i get starving! Bub must be growing.

My girlfriends are talking about organising me a baby shower in 2 months. this is exciting as i really dont have much yet. I have taken care of the big items but have no little bits and pieces. I wasnt going to have a shower as it is my 3rd and i felt funny having another one. But i agve most of my baby things away to all my friends and they all really want me to have one. I figure it will be fun.

This pregnancy is going so fast and i feel like the baby will be born and i will wonder where the pregnancy went! I am enjoying it though and if i could only sleep more nights i would feel great. Thr body pillow helps but i cant seem to shut my brain down at night.

22 weeks tomorrow

Well all that stretching and hunger last week was for a reason! My tummy is HUGE. I put a pair of my maternity pants on yesterday and i could not get the button to the hole by about an inch! I was wearing them just fine lat week! I couldnt believe it. So bub has definately done some serious growing last week. I weighed myself this morning and only gained 1/2 a kilo so i know its not "fat" i have out on. I am so sick of going to the toilet every 5 minutes (literally) and think someone should invent a pregnancy cathedar so we dont have to keep getting up. Not easy to keep getting up when your belly is so big.... It will only get bigger though.

Other than that everything is hoing very well and not really suffering many symptons or complaints. Thank goodness, very tired though but everyone seems to be tired about now so im sure its all normal. Will update again soon when something else changes...

BIRTH STORY

I had the pains on Tuesday, Wednesday and again Thursday night. I was at mums for dinner and the pains were regular and quite painful. My sister asked if i had not had kids before would i think i was in labour and i think i would have but i knew they would probably stop when i went to sleep which again they did.
I was then woken at 3.40am with the same sort of pains and i knew as i was resting that it must be the real thing as normally when you rest they stop. So i stayed in bed trying to rest until about 6am when they were getting too bad to stay lying down. So i got up and had a nice hot shower and thought mmm i better shave my legs and bikini line while im there! So i did that between contractions and Mick woke up about 6.30am and came and asked me if i was ok. I told him we would be having our baby today. He asked if i was sure and i said yes. i still told him to go to work though as long as it was local as i know things take time. He said there was no way he was going anywhere.
I stayed in the shower for a while and then when i got out the kids got up and Mick had called Julie so she could get organised. I called mum a little while later but told her not to rush. As soon as they got there about 7.40am i got emotional and started crying as i was realising it was all about to happen and it was very real. Mum started about going to the hospital and kept asking if i was ready every time i had a contraction! The pains were ok and when i got one i just held onto the tv unit and rocked and circles my hips ( this really helps)
All i wanted to do was tidy the house up and mum would not let me! She was worried as it was getting close to school time and we had to drive past a school ( 40km speed limit) we would get stuck in traffic and i would have the baby in the car. I was getting annoyed with her nagging and the pains were 5 minutes apart so i agreed to leave. I had already called the hospital and they said come when i was ready and not to leave it too long though as 3rd babies usually come quicker than 1st ones.
We got to the hospital about 8.30am and they took me straight to aa delivery room. My midwife was called and she came in a little later. They checked me and i warned them not to tell me if i was only 2cm dilated as thats why i didnt want to go to the hospital so early. Anyway i was 5cm so i thought that was great. I was coping fine and chatting between pains. A few hours later the pains were more intense and i was still coping ok with the gas. The gas is awesome if you start sucking it as soon as you feel a contraction is coming and then the midwife told me to let go of the contraction and not to hold onto the pain and i feel this really helped as the pain stopped sooner if i relaxed at the end and i felt almost drunk numbness from the gas.
They checked me again and i was still only 5cm and i was not happy. The pain was more intense by then and as i had been in labour for so many hours they said i should be further advanced and wanted to break my waters. They did that and the pain got a lot more intense. I was still ok but then after they broke my water i started getting contractions that would go 2 and 3 at a time with no break in between. If i had a break i would have been fine but no break was hard and they convinced me to try the pethadine first before the epidural. I got a contraction with 3 in a row no break so i sent Julie out to tell them forget the pethadine i wanted the epidural right then. They said there were 2 people in front and i said i has to go first! For some reason he was in the room in 4 to 5 minutes and was ready. I had the epidural which the only hard part was sitting perfectly still while getting contactions but it did not really hurt at all.
After another 2 contractions with the gas still the block started working and i was in HEAVEN. I was pretty tired by then and happy to have the rest. That was about 3pm and i pretty much went straight to 8cm after that. Her heart rate slowed down and they put the little electrode on her scalp and told me i was dilated and to push but to not take long as her heart rate was dropping and she was getting tired. I pushed for no more than 10 minutes and she was born at 3.58pm. I could not feel the contractions to know when to push but the midwives were feeling my tummy and told me when to push. I had watched enough birth shows to know to put my chin to my chest and to push like i was doing a poo. As the epidural was in i did not feel the burning or any pain at all as she was delivered.
They told me to feel her head and i reached down thinking i might feel a little bit but i could feel the whole top of her head! I started crying straight away realising i would meet her in a few seconds. Then Julie offered to get the mirror and i watched her head being born and then her body come out. I was a bawling mess! They lifted her onto my chest and i gave her a cuddle and looked between her legs and saw her little fanny. I cried and cried and cried. I was so full of love and emotion for this little angel on my chest i could not stop crying. She is so perfect. I was suprised how little she was as well as i expected 7pd 4 and she was 6pd 14. Not much difference but still so little. My placenta does not come away so they gave me an injection etc to get it to come out and it didnt so i was taken to theatre and had it removed manually ( for the 3rd time!!!) They knocked me out both times before but this time they topped up the epidural as before i only had the block put in as she was born so quick so i still had feeling in my legs. It meant i was awake for the procedure but i didnt have to wake from a general aneasthetic si i could go back up to her faster.
Mick went and got the kids when i got back and they came up to meet their little sister.
When i got wheeled to the room Mick walked out with her in his arms and i burst into tears again so he handed her to me. She spent the night lying naked ( minus a nappy) on my bare chest to snuggle. I didnt get more than an hour or so sleep as i was on a high.
She is absolutely perfect and we are totally in love with our princess.

How`s my pregnancy doing?

Thank you so much for your help! We finally got Evin sleeping in his crib this weekend. Even though his nursery is attached to our room, I still wake often and go in to see him.

Oh good I'm so happy to hear that! It does sound a lot like my issues with Ava (although I haven't had issues with mastitis or anything like that, knock on wood!). You're really giving me a lot of hope and making me happy I perservered! Even my doctor keeps saying she would have given up by now. Congrats on your success!

Who do you go to in order to get the numbing cream for the ear piercing? I know you said a chemist, but do you mean like at a pharmacy, the doctor, or the peole who are doing the piercing?

lizzie287 - Sunday, 31 August
Yeah with the nipple shield she'll nurse forever. I try really hard not to use the nipple shield because when I was using that exclusively she lost weight and my milk supply diminished drastically. She's usually nursing fine without it but every now and then she screams and cries and refuses the breast until I put the shield on. It's so weird, you'd think she'd like the bare nipple better! But even without the shield every now and then Ava will eat and eat and eat ... I know she's getting lots because a) she ends up spitting it all back up, and b) she completely drains me. Must just be comfort sucking, which is comforting to me to know she's comfortable there, even after all the trouble we've had. I'm glad so many others are having issues feeding ... well, not really, but Im happy to know I'm not alone and my baby isn't a complete freak! My lactation consultant has never seen anything like the way Ava behaves and is shocked that I've perservered! The things we do for our children ;)

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement. I am finally enjoying breast feeding. I did not think I was going to make it but after the first week to ten days I turned a corner and I think I will make it. It was nice to hear that other people had felt the same way I had!

monikaOH - Friday, 29 August
I will look for equivalent here, hopefully it doesn't have milk in it since my baby seems to vomitt more if I eat milk products.
Thanks!

Where do you buy Sustagen? Does it have milk in it?

Thank you so much for your sweet message :-). I think that is what is so great about this site is that we all have something to give and can learn from each other's mistakes. I don't blame you for not wanting to leave your daughter! I am extremely blessed with a job that lets me work from home and bring my son into the office twice a week. I haven't been away from him for a whole day ever, only a few hours here and there when I didn't have a choice. I was a nanny for 5 years and after that experience I have huge trust issues. There were so many people that from an outside perspective seemed like wonderful nannies but once you saw them without anyone else around some of them were actually a little scary. I think all nannies should have to be Mom's first because once you know how much someone loves that child it really changes your perspective on a lot of things. I don't blame you at all for putting off going back to work for as long as possible! It just sucks that it's so hard to survive comfortably on one income anymore.

littlecavalier - Tuesday, 26 August
You're the best, thank you so much! I am ordering them tonight and I'll let you know how it goes. I think the hard part will be getting into some kind of pumping pattern so that I am able to pump a bunch all at once. I know people do it, I just have to figure out how to train my body I guess. I really do appreciate all of your help!

littlecavalier - Friday, 22 August
The only issue with giving formula is that it will mess up your supply of milk. Your body only makes what your baby is eating so if she is drinking formula instead of breastmilk you won't ever make enough and always have to give formula. Are you able to pump at all? If you're worried about her getting enough you could try pumping and then topping her off with breastmilk just so you don't have supply issues later. It is the curse that causes a lot of Mom's to stop breastfeeding because they have to resort to using formula anyway. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if it doesn't! Also they definitely go through phases where they will eat more and eat less. I would just keep an eye on her and nurse as often as possible if she isn't eating much at a time.

littlecavalier - Friday, 22 August
My son is almost a year and has yet to bite me or at least hard enough to leave any kind of impression. Some babies are worse than others and will go through a phase that has caused their Mom's to stop nursing. I definitely would keep going until it becomes and issue and then you can either try to work through it or be content with making it for as long as you have. My sister and my Mom both quit breastfeeding when their babies started biting. Actually when baby is actively nursing they can't bite you as your nipple is way back in their mouth. The only time it can happen is after they stop sucking or if you try to force feed and they aren't really interested.

littlecavalier - Thursday, 21 August
It could definitely be teeth. Maybe you could try a little orajel on her gums before you nurse? I have heard mixed things about orajel though as my friend told me she heard that it affects their swallowing. I used it with my son and no harm came but I just wouldn't ever want to give out bad advice that caused some baby harm. Not sure if that all was helpful or not!!!!

littlecavalier - Wednesday, 20 August
Hey just read your comment and wanted to suggest that you try nursing laying down. I've heard that gravity can help slowing down the flow which might help your daughter to be more content.

beautifulbebe - Tuesday, 19 August
Hi - I am not a seasoned mommie having only breastfeed my 4 month old, but it is likely that your baby is just going through a phase. Mine did around that age. Just try to relax while feeding. Switch breasts when your baby starts screaming and see if that helps. Continue to burp and see if changing positions (like side lying) will help. Maybe nurse more often for a few days. It will pass. Don't give up!!

kelly714 - Monday, 18 August
Yeah, I secretly loathe the ladies that had no trouble with the feeding. lol Im glad were getting better at it, I dont know how long I could have hung on. I have to burp Jake quite often, and sometimes that is the reason he is flailing around, but I still have no idea why he does it the other times. I swear he is fighting sleep already! I bet when you do get your photos done they will be beautiful! You'll have to put them up for everyone to see and let me know so I can have a look! :)

kelly714 - Saturday, 16 August
Thanks for commenting on our picture, they turned out pretty good. Anyway, I hated the shield because Jake would flail around and always knock it off and we would have to start over again. For a long time he refused to feed even with the shield. Getting him latched on was the problem so having to start over really stunk. He would start screaming and around and around we went. It so much harder when he's tired too, he still screams sometimes, but less and less every time. The things we do for love! lol

kelly714 - Friday, 15 August
Jake wouldnt feed on the sheild too long. After 15 min or so he would have a fit and be done. Now that he is on the breast he feeds forever! lol He still has trouble latching on (which is quite painful) and once he does he doesnt suck very hard for very long and he never empties a breast? Now I have a whole new set of worries..lol But were plugging away and hopefully we'll get it all worked out in the next week or so. I soooo glad to be done with the sheild though!

kelly714 - Friday, 15 August
Thanks for the advice. He is back to nursing without the shield or anything today. I did use the shield last night, but today seems better. I just hope he keeps it up! Your LO is beautiful!

kirra82 - Tuesday, 12 August
such a pretty little baby even when she just woke up!!

kirra82 - Tuesday, 12 August
She is so cute with all her hair : )

MonikaOH - Thursday, 7 August
Just try each time on the beginning without shield. I squized nipple with finger to make "sandwich" If after couple minuted you get nowhere, get the shield back. Eventually baby gets used to eating without shield. It worked for me.

catsa79 - Monday, 21 July
Oh ya poor thing I hope you got an arvo nap!!
Ha, my luck ran out fed Cooper at 11pm-12, he woke again at 2am, dummy fixed that till 3am, then he woke up at 5am with pains and did big farts and poos, then woke at 7, 8, 9 grr!!! He has been unsettled all day I fred him at 12, 1 then I put him in bed with me for an hour he slept, now his in his own bed!!! Funny how it can literally change overnight!!

oldie44 - Sunday, 20 July
Thank you for reply. I felt guilty for using breastmilk, the way a nurse reacted when I told her. I actually got hold of the Dr and he gave me Rx eye drops, I will try it.
I started reading about clogged tear ducts and got scared, they even mention surgical procedure to open it up...
I am so anxious that I am doing something wrong and that it is my fault my baby has this infection. He looks so pitiful with one eye almost sealed with sticky yellow discharge...

catsa79 - Sunday, 20 July
its always the way u think i wont bother sleeping, then u could have had hours to sleep!!
Cooper is goo garing at me mainly when i change him and bath him and YES SMiled a real good one today when my mum was over!! heheh
have a good sleep!
