See how my baby is doing More....

Hi all! Diane here, newly married (November 24th, 2007) and anxiously awaiting baby number 1! We knew we wanted to try for kids as soon as we were married, so I came off the pill in September... thought I had my schedule down to know when we were 'safe' ...oops! But what a happy 'oops'! So, my wedding dress was a bit tight, but it was a great day :)

We're due on June 12, 2008 and it can't come soon enough!

Jan 6, 2008

So, I have come down with another sinus infection, blah. I woke up this morning with an awful headache, sore throat, stuffed nose.... hope this one passes quickly as I don't want to miss time from work. The good news is, I can feel the baby moving around more now than I could before, actual movements instead of just little flickers :) so that's pretty cool. I have my ultrasound on Jan 17 and my follow-up appointment on Jan 23. If we're lucky we'll find out if we're having a boy or a girl. My gut instinct says 'girl' but I am not leaning one way or the other for preference. My husband is the only boy, and his dad was the only boy, so he is hoping for a boy to carry on the name (you know how guys are :) but he would be happy either way. He is truly awesome with kids, he has three nieces that he adores, and they think he's the best thing ever. I am looking forward to watching him hold our little one :)

Jan 7, 2008

So I have to tell the story of how I found out I was pregnant, because it was such a surprise...

As I mentioned already, I thought it would take forever to get pregnant because of medical problems as a teen and in my 20's, so I came off the pill when I had my period on Sept 7, 2007. I was paying attention to when I was possibly ovulating, thinking I was beyond the time in Sept when I could get pregnant - we avoided 'the deed' for those days, knowing the wedding was coming up in a month, we would start trying then!!... little did I know I was running on a 36 day cycle (not the traditional 28 :) ... so October comes, and no period... I think that because I came off the pill the month before my period is just messed up... no morning sickness at all. Around October 10, I decide to be a zombie prom queen for Halloween (stay with me ladies, I am going somewhere with this!) I try on my horrid fuchia coloured prom dress from 1994, and it fits. Green wig, fake blood - perfect costume! Fast forward to October 25... gee boobs hurt, I assume that my period is finally going to show up... (ha!) ... Oct 28: Night of the Halloween party: Holy crap, I can hardly get the zipper done up on the dress! Thank goodness for Spanx! One and a half beers later (sorry baby!) I try a slice of my favorite pizza: Hawaiian with pineapple and onion. One whiff of the combo of onion and pineapple made me urge! Suddenly it hits me - OMG I'M FREAKING PREGNANT!!! The next morning a HPT confirmed it (INSTANT double line). The next afternoon, the doctor confirmed it: 7 weeks pregnant. WOO HOO!!! What do you have to say about that all ye doctors who prepared me for years of infertility!!??

Anyway there it is, a little late in the telling, but told none the less :) Good luck with your pregnancies ladies!

January 9, 2008

Woo Hoo! I just got back from a doctor's appointment, and baby is doing great :) 152 heart beats/minute! I did not expect to hear the baby's heart beat as my family doc is not an Ob/Gyn, and I expected I would not hear the heart beat at my scheduled Ultrasound on the 17th. My doctor asked if I would like to have a listen, so I said 'sure' - swoosh - swoosh - swoosh!! Cool!

January 12, 2008

Good day all! Woah have I popped! I am HUGE!! 13 pounds gained now (thanks Christmas) I really have to post some belly pics :)

I purchased a fetal heart listening system yesterday, but only after reading the instructions did I realize that the monitor won't work to hear heart beats until 21 weeks (I am 18 weeks today). I can, however, hear lots of kicks, and my own digestion system - lol! Hearing the kicks is like listening to a bongo drum beat, and is the next best thing to hearing the heart beat.

January 22, 2008

Ugh, I slipped and wrenched my back on Sunday, and now have to have massage therapy and physio. I did not fall on my back or belly, just twisted awkwardly on the way down. My back is killing me, and I have missed two days of work - not good! Doctors say I have a bad case of Round Ligament Syndrome. On the up side, I have my first ob/gyn appointment tomorrow afternoon, so I'll get the results of my ultrasound if I'm lucky!

January 27, 2008

Ok, so I am officially off work for the next two weeks. My family doctor freaked me out by telling me I am at high risk for a slipped disc which would land me in hospital. The good news is the physio and massage therapy seems to be helping, and I have a maternity back brace which is keeping my pain level at a stand still rather than getting worse. Hey - if D.N. from work is reading this, please pass on that baby is fine, it's just my back that has me laid up!! :)

February 6, 2008

Still off work, likely until baby comes. My doctor wants me to see a neurologist if the numb sensation on my right side keeps up! Baby is pinching my nerve so badly that I am losing sensation from my hip to just below my right butt cheek (TMI!! lol).

On another front just wanted to update that all blood work and ultrasound results came back fine. Our boy is growing really well (and still loves to cozy into my right side... my bump is even lopsided! Funny, but OW! Me thinks I'm in for a rough time with back labor :( All worth it in the end!!!

February 7, 2008

Got good news from my step-mom last night - she offered to buy the paint and trim, etc. for the nursery AND she and my dad will come over on a weekend to do the whole room up. NICE!! I have been looking at what I would like to do to decorate the nursery but have been dreading how we'd actually get it done (with my back and JC working full time/over time). Now I don't need to worry about it anymore! Excellent (-:

I'm sad that my actual mom won't be here to help prepare for baby, and to see her grandson - she passed away in 1998 from breast cancer. I know she's got her eye on us from the great beyond, and I feel her presence every day.

February 21, 2008

Hi fellow preggo's and moms. I am at week 24, and this sciatica has me sooo sidelined... I am on back rest for the majority of the day, and I can lift absolutely nothing. The numbness on my right side is frightening, but part of major sciatica and slipped disc, so as long as doc does not worry about baby's health, I won't either. Thank goodness for my Mac laptop! It sits nicely on my lap just under my bump! I have a nest of pillows surrounding me :) The best thing is the warm bath I have three times a day - the only relief as the weight is totally off my back thanks to our deep bath tub. Anyway, enough complaining! My husband has been so amazing. He cooks and cleans and runs errands for me, but he has a full time job working 10 hours+ a day, so it gets lonely some times.

Baby's room is coming together! I have not had a hand in helping because of the back issue, but I have helpers painting and putting the furniture together :) Can't wait to see it all complete!
We're going with blue and yellow with white furniture - very cheery. 16 weeks to go!

March 03, 2008

Wow, 100 days until my due date. Baby has now decided that he needs to stretch all his limbs alllll the time. This means I feel as if I have done 1000 sit-ups and my abs are killing me. My husband is going to think I am 'crying wolf' when I do go into actual labor, because I am already moaning and groaning and crying with one pain or another all the time! I don't hope for an early delivery (I want our boy to be good and ready before he arrives for his health's sake) but I do wish I could enter a time machine and fast forward to his date of arrival!!!

Also new this week - breathlessness - It's hard to catch my breath most of the time. My fundus is now well up in my ribcage area. I measured 27cm at my appointment last week (at 25 weeks I should have been around 24-25 cm) and I have a short torso. His heart is strong and he loves to sweep his hands and feet along the uterus wall. The other night I could actually feel knuckles as he swept over and over again :) too cute. *kick* there - he's awake again now. He has active times about five times a day while I am awake, and he wakes me up at night when he moves. I am glad to feel all the activity (despite the discomfort) as it lets me know he's doing ok.

March 12, 2008

Wow genetics! I've been missing my mom today, and trying to remember all she ever told me about her pregnancies before she passed in 1998. One thing that I recall now is her showing me the stretch mark that I gave her during her pregnancy with me. It was on her left side from her hip to her belly button... guess where the only stretch mark I have is? You got it - exact same place as the one she had! Cool or what? Well, stretch marks are not cool, but it's a cool connection!! I was her third and last baby, and with each pregnancy she got one (and only one) stretch mark during. I was the left hip, while my brothers gave her one on each boob! lol - she said she knew I was a girl because I gave her a stretch mark on the hip rather than the boob! Now I'm having a laugh/cry!!

I want to keep as much of my pregnancy experience written down for my child (children hopefully if I can have more!) so that they can have the details available to them. Maybe my son won't take too much from what it was like for mom to be pregnant, but if I ever have a girl, I think she would appreciate the information I keep should she ever have a baby herself.

Time for physio - be well ladies, and keep tracking your pregnancies - you'll have a laugh/cry when you look back at it all in 20 years!!

April 5, 2008

Much has happened since my last update, and I currently don’t have computer access. My husband J.C. is being my messenger by adding this update for me J

On March 13, while walking from the kitchen back to the living room, I ended up having such major sciatica pain that I instantly got dizzy and blacked out. I almost made it to the couch, but actually fell between the coffee table and couch. I was awoken by our cat Phoenix who was walking on my shoulder. My back was hurting so much, and I was still dizzy, but once I came around I called my husband to tell him I needed to go to the hospital.

My blood pressure was low (90/60) upon my arrival at the hospital, and it has remained about the same throughout my stay here… Yup I am still in hospital. The pain was so bad I had to have an epidural inserted in my back for three days, followed by a steroid shot. Neither worked to reduce the pain. My doctors decided to try the epidural again, this time for four days, however even after the first day I knew something was wrong. With the pain in my lower back and hip getting no better and a new pain developing at the epidural site, I kept telling doctors and nurses I had an infection. My concerns were brushed off, until night four, when I was crying in pain so much and telling the nurse I was going to pull the epidural out myself! An anesthesiologist was called to pull the epi-catheter. No shock to me – but a surprise to him, it was badly infected. The next morning (last Monday) I ended up having an emergency MRI done to see if the infection had made it to my spinal region – luckily it had not, but I needed to go on an aggressive course of “am-cef” antibiotic right away. A week later and I still have a lump on my back, but it’s getting better. The MRI revealed FINALLY what has been the cause of my lower back pain. I have herniated the L4 and L5 vertebral discs in my back on both sides – nasty! I still have the sciatica to boot, plus the low blood pressure (sometimes as low as 72/38) but at least now I know what I am dealing with.

Because I will not be able to push correctly, I have been scheduled for a C-Section on May 23. That is 2 1/2 weeks earlier than my due date, however, the sooner I get a healthy baby out, the sooner I can get my back fixed! Looks like I will be here the whole time, but I will update once I am home and baby Sebastian (yes, his official name) is here. Good luck ladies! Keep me posted on your progress!!

April 19, 2008

Another update from the 9 North B wing of the hospital: Sunday the 20th is my baby shower that will be held downstairs here at a conference room. My family and friends have really come together to help out with the prep and it looks like about 50 people will attend – crazy!
On another bright note, after three months of fighting with my insurance company, my short term disability payments have been approved! One less thing I now have to worry about – just have to stress about having a baby here in about a month!

Thanks for the information on Tums. Are these chewy like taffy or just chewable. The ones that I have are chewalbe, but they're still chalky and gross. They're mixed berry flavored or something. I miss my Rolaids chews that were like vanilla taffy :(
