I'm 39 years old (40 in August) and totally shocked (still everyday) at the fact that I am pregnant with #3. I have two beautiful girls, ages 7 and 10, and needed surgeries and drugs for them to even be here. Many years ago I was told that with all my problems that it would be highly unlikely I would ever be able to get pregnant again, so my husband and I never worried about it (or used birth control, being good catholics) and what do you know? They say if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans, well he must be laughing!

This is life-changing and my husband and I are still getting used to what this means. But with so many sad and horrible stories you hear everyday, how can you look at this miracle as anything but positive? I have to admit, I'm getting excited. I always loved being pregnant. This time around seems similar to the other two, but I'm much more TIRED.

(Sarah & Lindsey)

Hi, Sorry to hear about you failing the 3 hour glucose test...GD...what a pain that must be. I hope your appointment goes well with the nutritionist. 2 weeks seems a long time to wait. Good luck with that!

I hope you have had a fantastic holiday! I am SO ready to get away... still working! My last day is Friday - it can't come soon enough!!
Looking forward to hearing about your vacation soon.
Valerie x PS Thank you so much for your kind birthday greeting...the best present was seeing our little bubba at the ultrasound appointment! It was an amazing experience.

firstbabyd - Saturday, 19 July
it took me a long time to get into the nutritionist too, which i thought seemed odd. if you want a few tips as to what some serving sizes are and how to "count" carbs just let me know...i'd be happy to share if it would help out until you have your meeting!

i told my family and friends if they want to come over and see the baby they must bring goodies...the first things on my list - a gallon of apple/cherry/grape Welch's juice, a pitcher of those Perfect Margartias from Applebees and a box of Lucky Charms cereal. so i'm right there with you on the fat alcoholic plan.

have a great weekend too!

Daisey - Saturday, 19 July
Oh crap! I'm so sorry to hear that. :-( I can't imagine. I take mine again in 2 weeks. You ate half a large pizza? Sounds like something I would do. My husband is making pizzas this very moment - yummy gourmet ones. No doubt I'll out do you! ;-) Enjoy your time at the beach! You deserve it. I'm doing ok. Had cosmetic eye surgery on Monday (fat eyelids) and so this has been an even more uncomfortable week, but I do think I look a little cuter! From the neck up, that is! :-)

stacy5175 - Saturday, 19 July
oh bummer, so sorry! I know how you feel, no alcohol, no sushi...I've been eating cold cuts and soft cheeses though...not a lot..why aren't you supposed to eat cold cuts? Nitrates? Soft cheeses because of the unpasturization right? Have fun at Hilton Head Island, sounds relaxing! My little one, is having a hard time since her surgery yesterday. Pain all day/night :( I can't wait til after the baby, to drink some wine or a martini and have some fun with a little buzz!

Hi Jessica!

I am guessing that you are pretty busy getting ready for your holiday? Is it tomorrow that you go away? Don't worry if you can't write before you go away - I know from experience how hectic things can be in the day or two before a vacation. I hope that you can relax and enjoy it!

Have you had any news from your 3hr glucose test? Just wondering how things are? My appointment with the midwife yesterday went well. All the usual checks were fine - blood pressure nice and low (117/61) and the baby is measuring spot on target for 28 weeks. She took blood for various tests including glucose to check for GD. If I don't hear anything soon then I have to assume everything is ok and if not I will have to go through the same 3hr testing the you have just had.

I have booked an appointment for a private 3/4d scan. We (the whole family) are going on Sunday at 1pm. It will be great for my two girls to see the baby....we are all looking forward to it.

It has been a good day here. I have just been for a nice lunch with my husband as it is my birthday today (I am 37 - eek! Getting closer to 40!!) and it is also my Wedding Anniversary. I got married to Antony 16 years ago today. As we both work at the University we could meet up for lunch easily - so we went to a nice restaurant for lunch without the children. It was very relaxing! The only downside is that I have to work today....only a couple more hours to go until I can go home!!

On the subject of names then we think the baby will be called Erin Iris. Just in case we have chosen a couple of boys names too - Harvey and Alfie!! I know these scans are normally right, but you never know....

I hope that things are OK with you. I will try and add some images from the scan done on Sunday. Take care and have a great weekend/holiday.
Valerie

The GD diagnosis sucks...sorry! I guess it is better to know. Do you manage just with diet? Or are you taking something? I finally got the much needed antibiotics for this sinus/throat infection I had picked up along with this cold...I can't believe I let myself suffer for 7 days! My husband says I'm too much of a martyr. After taking them for a little over a day now, I'm starting to feel human again! I KNEW it wasn't just a cold...and yet 2 of the 4 doctors I saw in the past week (OB appt., c-section pre-op appt.) didn't even look in my mouth or take my temperature after I told them how I was feeling. All they said was 'oh, it's just a cold'. I'm telling you, Some doctors are under the mistaken assumption that MD stands for 'Medical Deity', not 'Medical Doctor'. Too much power and no accountability...next time I'll go with my gut and find someone who will listen to me the FIRST time I say something! Only 4 more days until my delivery and now I have some catching up to do on my 'list'.

twinstwice - Friday, 18 July
Sorry to hear about the GD. I too was diagnosed with it and am expecting twins - it has seemed impossible to eat enough - I am always hungry. Since my first week of testing I was able to control my sugars the dietician said I could every hour (instead of every two) and now I just have to test once or twice a day when I able just to monitor the rest of the pregnancy. Good luck.

firstbabyd - Thursday, 17 July
i read your comment about GD and I don't think you're being selfish at all. i was very angry when i found out i had it! on top of losin out on the usual goodies in life while pregnant you have to miss out on the carbs and sweets too! a couple of good snacks i found are some organic fruit strips by archer farms at target - only 8 grams of sugar...and now quacker oats makes a low sugar oatmeal that i found is great in the morning or even as a snack! pringles individual snack packs are great for snacks or with lunch. smuckers makes no-sugar jams and preserves which i find are great for lunchtime pb&j sandwiches. good luck to you!

mamacakes - Thursday, 17 July
Hi..read your comment about the GD....I have it to...UGH! Sucks big time! But atleast its not forever! Anyhow...Some little tricks i have learned that work for me is at the end of lunch and dinner, if i finish it off with a tossed salad and a walk it gets my levels WAY down. Also for that sweet tooth...those 100 calorie packs are real good. I also find that i can splurge just a bit with a handle full if M & M's or something as long as I have it RIGHT after a testing. This way, by the time i have my next test, its outta my system...LOL...if you need any meal ideas or anything dont hesitate to ask. I have some good ones that are good for the whole family....I REFUSE to cook seperate meals! LOL Good luck!

Angiepangie - Wednesday, 16 July
Well, today is my last OB appointment before my c-section on the 22nd for my breech boy! I hope it doesn't get postponed...I am still very sick. Hopefully I will find out if there is anything I can take to clear it up...I'm really suffering. Last night the only way I could sleep was to put cold packs on my face and neck...I fell asleep like that! I don't think I'll believe them if they say it's viral...judging by what I've coughed up this morning (sorry TMI), there is something else in play here. I just hope they are sympathetic and give me some antibiotics. I am aware of the problems of over-prescribing, so I've been suffering and waiting for the swab results, but frankly, I want some relief ..and my 5 year old is sick too now, so I just might 'find' a doctor willing to give me something without the swab results if they are not back yet. I can't wait anymore.

Daisey - Wednesday, 16 July
6lbs in a week? Is that even possible? Only if it were all water and a full colon. I've gained 3 in a week, but not 6. I think you're fine. How often do you use the scale at home? Yep, I am going to mark my weekly progress consistant with the beginning no matter how big, stretchy, or nasty I may get. It helps keep me in check and answer for myself. If I like what I see, I'll keep up the good work. If I can't stand it, I'll work a little harder. :-)

shelm2 - Monday, 14 July
Hello there, thanks for your well wishes. The test was ok, a little dull of course, but no big deal. Although I now have track marks on my arms and hope I don't have to promise my co-workers I do not have a problem .

I did get a little worried cause when I got home, I hadn't eaten in 14 hours, and I just bottomed out. I started shaking and feeling faint and weak. I had to have my ENORMOUS lunch laying down on the couch! Not a pretty sight I can tell you. I hope that is not a bad sign. I couldn't believe how much I could actually eat!

Anyway, they tell me it is going to take a couple of days for the results to come back, so I am just going to put it out of my mind until then.

Hope all is well with you! Take care!

stacy5175 - Monday, 14 July
gosh, GD sounds yucky...I hope you don't get it! What a pain! Can you imagine being diabetic all the time? Especially insulin dependent!

Why do they do the full bladder ultrasound? I don't remember doing it with the first 2 pregnancies. The nurse told me to check and see if your cervix is long enough and to make sure it's not dilated.

Yes, my kids start school after labor day. I can't believe I'm coaching either, every year I say that...and here I am again :)

Are you going on vacation before your kids start school?

Daisey - Monday, 14 July
This weight is coming on too quickly. I hope I only gain 1 lb. in the next month like you. I doubt it! I haven't crocheted anything for the baby yet. I've been working on a huge blanket for Dad for many months now. My son's first blanket will be next. I'm excited to get started on it! :-)

Angiepangie - Monday, 14 July
I was getting really excited and trying to get everything done...but I think I over exerted myself. I ended up driving myself to the hospital last night to get tested for a strep A infection. I started off with what I suppose was a cold on Thursday, but ignored it and proceeded to clean the entire basement, finish painting the powder room, and run around like a mad woman over the past few days. Bad move! I woke up last at 12:30 am drenched in a cold sweat and sick to my stomach! Not to mention my throat felt like it was lined with razorblades! I had rheumatic fever as a child,(strep infection in my heart) which left me with a damaged valve, so when I start feeling this bad, I worry. This is NO time to end up with a systemic infection. So of course when I got there they sent me to Labor & delivery and hooked me up. After making sure William was OK and taking a swab, they sent me home to rest...but I'm still suffering, and I'm hoping to hear back from the lab so I can stop worrying that I might have strep or the flu 8 days before my surgery! Either way I hope whatever I've managed to get clears up in time...I don't know if they will still do the surgery if I'm really ill. Cross your fingers for me!

marsup - Sunday, 13 July
Hello! We just got back from camping, tent camping no less.. it rained a lot but all in all it was fun.
I gained 15 lbs so far, you are doing very well! When do they usually do that blood sugar test? Does the amount of sugar you eat lately have anything to do with it? If so I am SCREWED! lol

sparklyval - Sunday, 13 July
Hi! Sorry to hear about you failing the glucose test. I hope that it doesn't turn out to be GD. From what I have heard, that seems like a pain - with having to carefully monitor everything that you eat and keep an eye on quantities of carb's etc. I am not sure that I would cope with that kind of a diet at all! It must take a bit of organising. I got tested quite a bit for GD last time around as they thought that may be the cause of me having such big babies, but I never got a positive result, so it can't have been that. I am hoping that I don't get it this time around either. Keep me posted about how your 3 hour test goes.

At least everything else is good. I haven't had an appt. now since my big 20 week check. I am going to see the midwife on Thursday this week, just for all the routine checks. I feel good so hopefully everything is OK. The next big thing will be the private scan I am going to organise. I need to ring and make an appointment with the clinic on Monday. I have to fit that in before 25th July as I will be away visiting family after that for a while. I can't wait to see what the baby looks like now!! My two girls are going to be sooo excited!!

Sounds like you are just as busy as me with family visiting, your vacation to come soon etc. It is just mad where time goes to...hard to believe that we are now in the third trimester! Vx

maha55 - Sunday, 13 July
Aaahhh...we all have something to face in pregnancy!!!...I havent experienced GD but know its "sugar" related..can you modify results by changing diet???? I hadnt eaten sugar for nearly 5 years before I conceived and been on low GI diet....would this help???...well thats good you arent anemic..I border on it!!!! thats my thing generally so lots of parsley and iron tabs...and your bubba is doing great strong and healthy..yah!!
Yes sleep deprivation...trying to stay calm and surrendered..I have a great helpful partner (not like my first who helped when he felt like it!!)..Don is alot more conscious so am pleased bout that..I am lucky my boys school bus stops outside our gate ..its fantastic...even though I will need to help get them ready in morn I can go back to bed after they leave!!....aahh the joys of mother hood...and beyond...stay positive.....
yes my book is getting alot of publicity..its v exciting and good to have a little business after bubba born...
take good care..xx

stacy5175 - Thursday, 10 July
What do you have to do/not do when you have GD? Never had it, but it sounds like a bummer! I have to take the glucose test in 3 weeks, and the FULL bladder ultrasound, yuck!

This month is crazy, seems like all I do is drive my son around to summer school and x country practice...all over the hill. Then next month my daughter starts cheer, I'm coaching...so it'll be 2 hrs/day 4 days/week for the whole month of aug. Busy summer ;)

Hope your glucose test is normal!!!

shelm2 - Thursday, 10 July
Hi there, I failed my test with a 168 as well. This is my third baby as well (I also have to little girls) and I have not had this problem before. They told me, on my last pregnancy, that I was a little high but still within the window of averages. I have to go in for the three hour test on Monday morning. What happens if you have gd? What are the chances that you have it if you fail the one hour test? I am not looking forward to the test but I really really don't want gd.

debora - Thursday, 10 July
Hmmm...sorry to hear about the tests. Hopefully all will work out.

Yes, I am fine and happy. Just so confused with what to do with only two days to go until you know who.

Anyway, I will just do what I can and leave the rest!

Smiles,

Debora :-)
