My First Baby...On Her Way!

Hello, I guess I’ll tell you a little about my self...I’m 24 years old and expecting my first baby with my husband. I have been married for a little more than a year but have spent eight years prior to marriage with him! i am high risk due to diabetes, i was considered boarder line diabetic when i was 18 but now i currently have to use insulin. also at the age of 18 I was told i had pcos and i do not ovulate. do to the pcos it was a extra small chance that i would be able to conceive, by the way let me add that i hardly ever got my period do to unbalanced hormones...making it hard to get pregnant. well I gave up! what do you know 5 years later I’m expecting my blessing, i hank God every kick i feel!

I'm now a few days away from being 8 1/2 months! i am just now experiencing heart burn, once again morning sickness and shortness of breath. i see my ob/gyn once a week, starting this week. he has ordered NST ( non stress testing) once every other week due to the fact of one dizzy spell i had. i have gotten ultra sounds once every month and as of today gained only 12 lbs. i cant wait to see what we have created!

Hi I am also a diabetic and I have to have a c-section Iam due August 7th but am having my c-section on July 29 due to the baby being bigger and to watch for her sugar level being to low. I hope this helps you out alittle

-Steppie- - Wednesday, 23 July
Hi,
Sorry that your Dr is being like that...
Everyone Ive known who have been diabetic while pregnant have all had Csections, with the 2 most recent ones Ive known it has been because of the size of the baby and also so that the baby is out faster so they can check their blood sugar levels, apparently if the natural labour takes too long the baby can get low blood sugar and get really lazy in all aspects then they have to watch them really closely...

I know how scary it must be to be told you would need a Csection I would be petrified, though I guess when it comes down to it, in the end youre going to have your beautiful baby to hold either way...
Good luck... tell your Dr what for and unless he/she can give you a really good reason as to why you 'need' a Csection tell em to jam it :)

Shelbyandbaby - Wednesday, 23 July
hello, you definatley have the right to tell your doctor that you dont want a c-section. Your doctor has to go by your wishes this is your and your babies birth experience not his, he wont have to deal with the recovery afterwards. Ive noticed that alot of doctors will push for c-section because it is easier for them and then they wont have to wait out the whole labour and delivery, i actually watched a documentary on this called the buisness of being born, its really really good, talks about how doctors now prefer c-sections over vbac because it only takes about an hour and then they are done and can go home.....there is no way that your doctor could tell at this point if you wont be able to deliver an 8.5 lb baby....you have to at least try to see if the baby will fit through your pelvis by trying vaginal......if you dont want a c-section then tell him no!!!

TWINSX2 - Wednesday, 23 July
Hey, You are the patient! unless you or thebaby are in danger, there should not be a need to section you without you having the option of trying to push first. If thisdc will not let you try first tell him you will be getting a second opinion unless he can tell you why a section is MEDICALLY NECESSARY and why pushing isn't an option.

Hi sondra, I know how you are feeling! I have GD also and would like to try to avoid a c-section. Eventhough my baby weighs 8lb6oz already, my dr knows my intentions and is willing to let me push first. Not only can women deliver 9+ lbs vaginally, the U/S is not 100% accurate! My GD S-I-L delivered a 6lb11oz baby a day after she was told her baby was over 8lbs! My doc did discuss with me she would like to induce sometime during 39 weeks because he went from 6lb10 oz to 8lb6oz in a wk! (But then she said she isn't sure how accurate the u/s is b/c if the measurment is even a mm off, it throws the weight off) So I find out friday what's going on. I would talk to your doc and see why he is shooting for the 3rd... Is he going on vacation, and trying to schedule what's convienient for him? Or ask why its medically necessary, and you want to try vaginal first. Good luck to you :)

rojonah - Wednesday, 23 July
I know your pain....why wont he even give you the benefit of the doubt to at least get induced? i had gestational diabetes and we agreed that at 6 1/2 pounds
i wanted to be induced. he was 6/10...but now 6 years later with this pregnancy...I would not go through induction again. you are the patient, and you have the right to tell him how you feel...if for some reason he cant agree...get another doctor...that is not fair. why give you a c-section, and one isnt needded yet....screw him! hit me back though.

sweetnightmare - Wednesday, 23 July
I say do some research first online about being diabetic and giving birth natrually. Find out the risks, and then weigh the risks vs. the benefits for your situation. I think that can help you decide what is best. Also try getting a second opinion.

The only reason that I can think of that he may be suggestion a c-section is because the baby maybe too big to get through the birth canal. I actually was just reading about it in the book "What to expect when your expecting" They have a website where you maybe able to find the article. Good luck.

Doctors aren't always looking out for your best interest...that is a major misconception that many women fall into. He can't MAKE you do anything you don't feel comfortable with. If there is a different OB you can go to in the practice, I'd try them. Just make sure that any choices you make are informed and that your doctors have a reasonable explanation. C-section, regardless of what some say, also carries numerous risks and is major surgery, so it shouldn't be taken lightly. Good luck!

mommyofnaters - Wednesday, 23 July
I would talk to your doctor about not wanting a c-section. I was induced with my daughter at 36 weeks and she was perfectly healthy. She was also 8# 12oz. Also, I had that same thing happen one week I was dialated and the next not. I never thought to ask why because I was being induced at the time. I wish you the best of luck and Congrats!!

BabyEby3 - Wednesday, 23 July
you do have a choice and you really need to tell him you would prefer wait until your due date if nothing then start talking about a c-section unless you are having problems of course he may know something you dont so ask him why is he wanting to do this 6 days before you are due?? Be firm this is your body and you make the final choice!!

JENNIFERSD - Wednesday, 23 July
Hello, I had a c-section (which I chose). I had watched so many births on TV that the V-birth scared me, everyone looked like they were in so much pain. Whenever they showed a c-section, it looked so easy and painless. I have to say that for me, it was super easy and the recovery was no problem. If you have to go that route, don't worry.

mommy2bwithtwins - Wednesday, 23 July
he is only thinkin about givin u a healthy baby delivering it healthy either ur high risk or obese/over weight or theres complications and pushing will make it worse i think doc knows best n most cases but ya ask a sec doc get a sec opinion but think of a healthy delivery not just wat uuuu want...

mumofsix - Tuesday, 22 July
I would push for a natural delivery unless there is a really good reason for a c-section. If he wont listen I would get a second opinion or a new OB. At this stage I can't see any real reason for a C-section.

merarth - Tuesday, 22 July
HI, I read your post... if your dr wants you to deliver the baby by 3rd, can't he do something to start your labour before? ie, breaking your water or giving you something to start labour?

I've heard these days that drs want to do a lot of c-sections. I would definately get more info...

Ask him more questions. Already that you left there with questions, why were you dialated last visit and not this one...

It's your body! You gotta take control of it!

lil-mama-of-6 - Tuesday, 22 July
I'm pretty sure if you refuse they can't do anything about it....tell your dr. how important it is to you and it's your body and your choice...good luck!

Cinxia - Tuesday, 22 July
Get a second opinion, there will be other OB/GYN that will work with you on your choices. I'm not sure why he is so egger to cut you open, when you could still have an induced semi natural vaginal birth. Guy sounds like a moron, go see a different doctor.

kristenpaxton - Tuesday, 22 July
i was a borderline gestational diabetic with my last preganacy and delivered naturally at 42 wks. He was 10 lbs 11 ozs...i was a size 3 when i got pregnant so its very possible for you to deliver on ur own when ur baby is ready. Maybe u he would induce u for a natural birth instead?? id definately ask...

scorpgrl20 - Tuesday, 22 July
If I were you I would tell that doctor no..and if you can't tell him no ...then keep putting it off...just keep saying "we'll see what happens"...unless something is wrong with you or the baby there is no reason to have a c-section and don't let him push you into anything that you do not want. I even know people that are in that situation that get induced. Did he not think of that?? But whatever you do...do not let him break your water if he induces you because then your on a 24 time clock and you'll end up a c-section anyway. Even if the induction doesn't work that day you can always go home and come back two days later and try again. Just remember it is your body and no one can do anything to you with out your consent. Some doctors push c-sections because they are fast and fit into their schedules. Sorry about ranting and raving but this stuff upsets me...My friend was a nurse in labor and delivery for 6 years (now she switched) but she always tells me that it is my body and in labor if you are ok and the baby is ok don't let anyone do anything you don't want. She saw so many doctors talk patients into things and afterwards the patients regretted it. Good luck ..let me know what happens!

kathy24 - Tuesday, 22 July
Hi there, I have gestionational diabetes and now high blood pressure, my doctor is telling me that because of that I will probally have a c-section, I don't want that I would much rather deliver vagional and I told my doctor that this week at my 35 week check up but was told pretty much that if I continue with high sugar levels and high blood pressure than the baby will be stressed during labor and I would end up with an emergency c-section anyways.

banganbaby2 - Tuesday, 22 July
Sondra,
My friend had diabetes and delivered an 8lb boy at full term-without a c-section. The good news is that you still have time- go get some second and third opinions from other OB's....I actually think that is the option I will take because my Dr. wants me to have a planned C-section simply because my first child was delivered that way and because I had infertility issues. I really want to try and have this baby naturally. Keep me posted.

hopeuragirl - Tuesday, 22 July
i read your comment and i want to let u know you are the boss and that doc works for you!! its not too late for you to switch docs!!

lukxyz294 - Tuesday, 22 July
i totally agree with the last couple comments!they can't force it upon you if it is not absolutely necessary! A friend of my recently had a c-section as recommended by the doctor. The doc told her that she was going to have an 8 pounder... but when the baby was out....she was nowhere near that size and the baby actually needed to go to NICU because her lungs weren't mature enough!! So just follow your instincts and if your doctor can't respect your decision or address your concerns, find another who will! good luck!!

amberlynn1111 - Tuesday, 22 July
Well, it put me into labor.....but i was dilated to 1 cm. Maybe that did make a difference. Regardless, i wish you the best. Keep us posted!

danahlovesdoug - Tuesday, 22 July
Oh hun your Dr sounds like a real ASSHOLE!!! First he CAN'T make you have a c-section, and the last I heard women who are diabetic have been having babies for years and years. Get a good support team to go with you to the next Dr apt and tell him how you feel, and if he still acts crazy tell him to F off and get a new Dr (or at least a 2nd opinion!)
