My First Baby...On Her Way!

Hello, I guess I’ll tell you a little about my self...I’m 24 years old and expecting my first baby with my husband. I have been married for a little more than a year but have spent eight years prior to marriage with him! i am high risk due to diabetes, i was considered boarder line diabetic when i was 18 but now i currently have to use insulin. also at the age of 18 I was told i had pcos and i do not ovulate. do to the pcos it was a extra small chance that i would be able to conceive, by the way let me add that i hardly ever got my period do to unbalanced hormones...making it hard to get pregnant. well I gave up! what do you know 5 years later I’m expecting my blessing, i hank God every kick i feel!

I'm now a few days away from being 8 1/2 months! i am just now experiencing heart burn, once again morning sickness and shortness of breath. i see my ob/gyn once a week, starting this week. he has ordered NST ( non stress testing) once every other week due to the fact of one dizzy spell i had. i have gotten ultra sounds once every month and as of today gained only 12 lbs. i cant wait to see what we have created!

I dont believe your doctor can make you have a c-section.. I am having problems out here in vegas cause everything out here seems to be a scheduled Delivery. That doesnt mean you have to have a c-section but they can endose your labor for a Natural. I am wondering how that is natural when you forced the labor. Hope everything works out.. Please keep me updated..

jutterback - Tuesday, 22 July
tell your doctor how your really feeling, he cant make you do something you dont want to do. Switch doctors if that dont work. Its your baby and your labor, you get to decide.

kokimama - Tuesday, 22 July
Sondra, if you don't need an emergency C-section, your DR, cannot force you to do it. Ask him more information, besides he doesn;t know if the baby will be 81/2 pounds. no one really knows exactly how big the baby will be.

You have a choice!!! The only reason doctors love c-sections is because it takes them 30 min and it's scheduled and they're not stuck with you in a hospital for 24 hours missing other patient appointments. You can tell the punk to take a flying *uck at the moon, have a home birth or seriously get a different doctor! What's a week to change if you are not overdue???? I had an emergency c-section with my first and now I am thinking it wasn't so emergency after all. I am going au naturel this time and I have no qualms about kicking my ob/gyn out of the delivery room if she mentions c-section. There are always other ob/gyns on staff at the hospital. Do what you want and what your body tells you is right. If it's not meant to be, you will try your best and then have a c-section if it is truly a must, otherwise hopefully will deliver our babies they way it was intended, no scalpels!!!!

hey mamas,congratz on your preganncy.

bluspirit - Tuesday, 22 July
In my last pregnancy my cervix was opening and closing. It sounds crazy but it can happen. My Dr. wants me to have a c-section also. Try asking him what his reasons are for wanting you to have a c-section and ask if you can try to deliver before having to have a c-section. that's what I did with my Dr. and then he better explained things to me.

sunnydelight - Tuesday, 22 July
My best friend is diabetic and had a vaginal birth. Her doctor never insisted on her getting a c-section. I would tell your doctor that you won't have a c-section unless it's absolutely necessary. If he doesn't like it see if you can get a different doctor who won't force the issue on you.

mommad - Tuesday, 22 July
Dilation and effacement is kinda a gray area. They can tell you but it isn't always 100%. Just like with me, one dr told me I was dilated 2cms and 70% effaced at 37 weeks, today I was told I was 3 cms and 50% effaced. Doesnt make alot of sence. I would ask your drs exactly what your risks are for having your baby vaginally. Just being a diabetic doesn't warrant a c-section! Ask for another opinion.

Cailet - Tuesday, 22 July
You might have been just almost 1 cm last week, and you are the same this week but if another doctor examined you, they might not say you are dilated until it's more pronounced. Kind of like them all measuring our stomachs differently.

Yes you have a choice about a c-section. Maybe he meant he would induce you. Normally they won't just decide to do a c-section unless there is a medical reason, and an 8 lb baby isn't a big enough reason unless you are teeny teeny tiny, and even then they would let you try and have it vaginally first. I would ask at your next visit if he meant he would INDUCE, or if he meant c-section. If he says c-section, make him explain why. he can't force you to do it and if there is a reason it needs to be done, he needs to explain it

BTW my first was 8'7" and my 2nd was 9' 9", they were both vaginal deliveries and everything was fine!

ladybugang - Tuesday, 22 July
Well if your sister has already been through it and it is 6 days ahead i'm not sure i'd want that either. Sounds like maybe he is trying to do this around his schedule instead of yours. yeah be firm. there is really no reason you can't try and then if something starts happening they can do the c-section. If that happens you won't care anyways at that point. My doctor is trying to refrain from the c-section cause i asked for one since my first child was so hard for me but i was only 17 so i'm just scared. You need to do what you feel is right for you and he needs to be understanding and if it is a real health issue he needs to explain it to you.

babynguyen - Tuesday, 22 July
Well im sorry for the way he is acting, maybe the best thing is just to piss him off. He's not having this baby and he isn't the one that has to recover from a c-section. Just try to put your foot down and keep pressing him to see it your way. Good Luck hon.

cmmbear - Tuesday, 22 July
You most definately have a choice!!! He is feeding you a bunch of crap I think. One of my best friends just gave birth to a 9lb 4oz baby so you will be perfectly fine. You can tell them NO that you don't want a c-section unless the baby is in danger or something. Don't let them bully you just because he doesn't want to do a natural birth. If they are worried about you tearing or something you can always have them do an episiotomy (sp?)

3rdtymeround - Tuesday, 22 July
I am scheduled for a c-section on 9/3/08. I have two other children age 5 and 2 which I delivered vaginally. I am 5'8" and normally 155 lbs, with hips for birthing. My babies were 8 lbs and 8 lbs 4 oz and they did horrible damage to my nether regions during delivery. I had to have corrective surgery down there so I gain can enjoy sex and go to the bathroom without leakage. Needless to say they will not let me deliver vaginally again and I am now scheduled for a c-section. AS you can see I appeared "built" to have babies, but in fact even normal sized babies were too much for me. If I knew then what I know now I would have had a c-section with all three. Am I scared to have a c-section, yes, but I would have done it everytime vs. that mess. If your doctor is strongly advising you to go c-section. I would just do it. Mine told me with #2 I should and I refused and then needed the corrective surgery. I should have just bit the bullet and followed his professional advise. Good luck in your decision.

Sondra - I think you should tell your doctor that you don't want a c-section unless it's absolutely necessary. An 8.5 pound baby is not even THAT big. My son was 8.2 and I had no problem delivering him and I'm a slender gal! It's your body. Tell him that you want to try to deliver naturally and if the baby is just too big after trying for a while THEN he can do a c-section. No reason for him to schedule one a week before you're even due. Just my opinion! Good luck! : )

Hi - I saw your post in 35 weeks. My SIL actually just had a baby and was a diabetic. They did an ultrasound around 36 weeks to see how big the baby was and if it was big, then they would have to induce her early. They never wanted to do a C-Section, they wanted to try to induce her first. Turns out the baby was small, so she went 1 day past her due date and then they induced. You should try to request the ultrasound and then ask to be induced first, there's no reason to go right to a C-Section. Good luck!

emmaflower987 - Tuesday, 22 July
another reason you may have to have a c-section besides your diabeties is because of the size of the baby... on some of the baby shows that i watch is the baby is 8+lbs they do a c-section... also alot of women that have diabeties often have to have a c-section because they do have diabeties... anyways, i hope everything works out for you

Mama2Miaplus1 - Tuesday, 22 July
Well I would ask to be induced not let them bully you into a section. My daughter got stuck as she had a big head not because of her weight but I had a ventouse and it she came out first push with that. My brother was 6lb10 but got stuck as he had an egg head my mom said so it is not always on the weight of the baby. Ask to be induced and have an epidural as soon as possible in case you end up having a section as then it will just need to be topped up for the operation. I can't have epidurals so my section will be under general unfortunately.

*babylicious* - Tuesday, 22 July
I've heard diabetes can increase the chance of you having a large baby, so maybe it's because he doesn't want to put that much strain on your body by giving birth naturally? I hope everything goes ok for you.

I had to have an emergency caesarean with my first and i really didn't want one, but I got through it ok and although it wasn't the most ideal labour, it was all worth it when I had my baby in my arms! Good luck! xxx

SONDRA-go to the pharmacy (walgreens/cvs/anywhere like that) and get a bottle of oderless/tasteless castor oil. it costs like 3 dollars. Go home, take two tablespoons, and pack your bags. I did it with both my other kids at 37 weeks and it put me straight into labor. it is not unhealthy--i even talked to the pharmacist and my dr and they both said it will do nothing to the baby.

ladybugang - Tuesday, 22 July
Hey, I have diabetes too and they have told me the same thing. It has to do with your health as well as your baby's. You can not have a large baby because your body and heart may not be able to handle it. C -Sections are nothing these days. How much does your baby weight right now? Mine is only at 2lbs but i am only 28 weeks. Having diabetes and being pregnant do not go hand in hand like normal people. We have lot of extra things to pay attention to and control. I did not control mine well at all before i was pregnant and still have have high blood sugar which they are still concerned about but everything so far is going good so hopefully all will be well. You doctor is right unfortuantly. Please don't concern your self overly on the c-section thing. Just keep your sugars down and try not to gain to much more weight whatever that may be and maybe you will not have to have one. Mine told me 9-10lbs though. It also has to do with whether you have had a child already which i have and your weight and height on how large of a child you can have. Your uterus may not be able to handle a large baby. Write me and we'll talk more. I'll help with what i can. I see 3 differnet specialists.

babynguyen - Tuesday, 22 July
My doctor says that any other doctor trying to push you to do something that you don't want like a c-section than you should get a second opinion. A doctor not working for you is against you. I want to avoid a c-section myself and my doctor does too, so I will have a (as he says) blast and enjoy giving birth. He said I might be looking at a 7 to an 8 pound baby and he is worried that the baby would become 9 pounds and then I wouldn't be able to deliver naturally. Im very small in my pelvic and vagina (sorry TMI) so I think we will disuse an induction. I would just drop this doctor and try quickly to find one to suit your needs and wishes.

agonzales - Tuesday, 22 July
I also have the gestational diabetes and my doc said if the baby gets too big they will induce me a little early but not a csection. I dont think he should do one unless its an emergency. Ask him if he can have you induced instead of the csection.
