Sunday, 20 April My fanily did too--until I showed them numerous articles about all the risks associated with the drug, and about how medical journals have explicitly stated that after 34 or 35 weeks the benefits do not outweigh risks, and about how the meds only work for 48 hours anyway--I don't understand why docs prescribe it long term when numerous studies have found it only is effective for 48 hours in order to give time to take a steroid shot. My number one reason for not taking it though was when I saw it had been associated with brain damage and autism in the babies. I'd rather have a baby in an NICU for a short time than a permanently brain-damaged child. Maybe that risk is small, but is it worth it? For me, no. On top of everything, doctors prescribe this off-label (meaning the FDA has not approved of its use for this) and they don't even explain all the risks associated with it and people like my hubby just take whatever a doctor says without question and don't do their own research. I take more responsibility for my own health because I'm the one who has to live with my decisions. Anyway, so happy to hear you are being strong and following your instincts. I think they are stronger during pregnancy more than ever, and they are nature's way of ensuring the health of our babies. Just 11 more days until full term for me-woo hoo!!! socalgal -
Saturday, 19 April Hi Stefani,
I am 35 weeks and the doctor just prescribed me to take Terbutaline, which is the same thing as the Brethine. I took one pill and that was enough for me. I personlly feel that the benefits at 35 weeks do not outweigh the risks and side effects. So I am not taking it anymore. I would rather take my chances that the baby is born a week or so early. Since I made that decision, I have come across a lot of medical studies and articles that have come to the exact same conclusion--up to 34 weeks it is worth it, but after 35 weeks it is not. These medicines are very dangerous for mother and baby and there is not sufficient data to support taking them--that is why they are not even approved by the FDA for use for this purpose. Moreover, there iis no evidence that they work longer than about 48 hours, so if you take them longer than that, you are probably suffering for nothing. I hope you do not mind me speaking my mind, but it bothers me that doctors are rushing to prescribe this stuff so much and there is no evidence that it is doing any good at this stage of pregnancy. cGabby -
