My doctor called yesterday to tell me se received the report from my last ultrasound. She informed me that in addition to having placenta previa there was a spot noted in the ventricle. It `s called echogenic intracardiac focus/EIF). She said it was most likely nothing of concern because my triple screen was very good, but I will have to have a level II ultrasound in 2 weeks to look for any other possible markers for Downs. Apparently this EIF can be a normal finding, but may also indicate abnormality if it `s coupled with other findings or risk factors. I `m trying to stay calm, especially since the MD kept stressing that it `s probably just a normal variance. Wish us luck!

In just a few hours we go for our level 2 ultrasound... I can `t wait to speak with the perinatologist. Hopefully all goes well : )

Wednesday, 12 March

All is well with Penelope Jane. The perinatologist who did the level 2 ultrasound said there are no markers indicating any problems and that we should not worry a bit about the EIF. We went to our first Bradley Childbirth Class last week and it was fun. Much of the material covered was review for me, but both my husband and I learned something new and we met some nice people. I've been keeping track of everything I eat, exercising, and doing my prenatal exercises too. Sleeping is becoming a little difficult as I wake up often to go to the bathroom and I've had leg cramping for the past few days. Sometimes I feel short of breath for no apparent reason. I guess it's the lack of lung space... Looking forward to this week's class and looking forward to 3rd trimester!

Friday, 18 April

Penelope is growing! All was well at last week's OB appointment. My labs were fine and I passed the 1 hour glucose screen. Penelope's heart rate was normal, amniotic fluid normal, placenta cleared cervical os, and she's was in a head down position. Appointments will now be every 2 weeks- not much longer now : ) The nursery is coming together nicely. Husband and I painted the walls and the furniture arrived yesterday. All we need now is a crib and a BABY! Yay!!!!

Hi there, I also have only just started having more noticeable movements because, like you, my placenta is on the front of the uterus and tends to block the kicks. Just today I finally noticed a kick on the outside just by watching my tum. All the best with your pregnancy.

Hey girl! Congrats on the little one. The doc found the same thing on my baby's heart. The told me not to worry that she looks perfect but how can you not? I pray that she will be fine and healthy. Let's just keep faith. I wish you nothing but the best! :o)

Hi Systolie,

I was searching online for info on EIF and found your entry. I'm 38 years old and this is my third pregnancy. I didn't have any problems at all with the first two, but that was 10 years ago. I was told yesterday that there is an EIF present, but no other 'markers'. There is a concern still b/c of my 'advanced maternal age' but that's it. I just thought I would say hello and it sounds like in your case it most definitely is nothing. Best wishes to you and your little sweetie!

Hello systolie, the same thing happened at by u/s appt. on Monday. Like you, all of my bloodwork came back normal and her measurements are normal for her gestation. I was offered the amniocentesis test, however, I decided not to take the test. Usually with downsyndrome, there has to be multiple markers, and I know from the u/s pictures, my blood work and age, my daugher is fine. I have been praying Psalms 139 over her every day and trusting God that everything is fine. Another reason I opted out of the amnio is b/c it can cause miscarriages, bleeding and cramping and I do not want to put her through any of that. Please keep me posted and I will do the same.

Yea!!! We just found out we're having a girl! The US tech is 85% sure. She also said my placenta is currently over my cervix, but that may change as things grow.
