pregnancy week by week

Hi everyone! My name is Heather, I'm 24, and from Southern Ohio. I found out I was pregnant for the first time in September 2006 but sadly, I miscarried @ 6 weeks. We continued to try (with no luck!) until December 2007, at which time I decided enough was enough. I made plans to go back to school this fall and it felt good not carrying around the TTC weight. I honestly didn't even know if I could get pregnant again. I had my LMP on January 18 and when it was time for me to ovulate again, I had very bad cramps which isn't normal for me. I think I ovulated on Feb. 1, and I wondered at that time if we could have conceived but I bit my tongue. On February 16, I took a Dollar Store test I had leftover from last year and it immediately turned positive!! I almost fainted =] I went straight to the store and bought 2 First Response tests and took one of them 3 hours later. It turned positive instantly. I took the other one 3 days later, which as expected, was positive also. According to the pregnancy calculators, I'll be due October 24. I am over the moon and so nervous at the same time. My fingers are crossed that this pregnancy will be a healthy, happy one!

*Pregnancy Timeline*

January 18--LMP

February 1--Approximate date of ovulation/conception. Bad cramping, layed in bed all night moaning and groaning.

February 16--Period due. BFP's at 7 and 10 PM. I used a dollar store test the first time and a First Response the second. My results were very dark and appeared almost immediately. On the First Response my test line was much darker and thicker than the control line. Weird?

February 19--Positive test @ the health department. Another BFP with the extra First Response. *Guess I just couldn't believe it!!*

February 21--Because of previous m/c and difficulty conceiving, I requested my hCG levels be checked. Had blood drawn, will get those results tomorrow.

February 22--hCG came back at 3,237. Nurse didn't say what my progesterone was. I go back Saturday to have more blood drawn to see if levels are rising. Just wondering if those levels are normal??

February 24--Ok, here are my results from the hCG and progesterone levels. On 2/21, my hCG was 3,237 and prog. was 18. On 2/23, my hCG was 6,542 and my prog. was 17.86. I was advised by the lab. tech. to go to the ER because my progesterone lowered and my doctor isn't available on the weekends. I panicked and cried the whole way there but once I talked to the doctor on duty, she said everything is FINE! They drew more blood to test my hCG again to make sure it's still rising and it's went from 6,542 yesterday to 8,000something today. She said they don't test the prog. level so I don't know what that was, but that a .14 drop was negligible. She told me to call my doctor tomorrow to see if there's anything I should be doing. I'm trying so hard to relax and enjoy this pregnancy but this is all very scary!

-February 26--First visit with my doctor. They had me come in early (I'm assuming) because of my hormone levels. She did an u/s and we could see the gestational and yolk sacs but no baby yet! Scheduled follow-up appt. in a week to see if the bean is growing.

-March 3--Visit with the nurse. No ultrasound, just went over my health history and had MORE BLOOD DRAWN to check my hCG levels again. YUCK. So tired of being poked and stabbed with needles!

-March 4--OK, finally we saw the little bean and it's heart is already beating!! Sooo excited we've made it this far =) From the crown to rump measurement, I'm 6 weeks and 2 days and my due date is October 24. DR said my levels are rising and everything looks great.

-April 8--Next appt. with DR

-May 23--It's been a while since I've been on here because I lost my password and had to create a new account. Fortunately, everything has been going great and I couldn't be happier. We had our last u/s on May 6 and the baby's measurements looked good. Unfortunately, our little flump was on it's head with it's legs crossed so we couldn't get a clear view of the gender. (Stubborn like Daddy!) Hopefully at our next appt. baby will be spread eagle for us =)

-May 27--BIG ultrasound appointment!! I can't wait!
EDIT: Baby was stingy with its goodies! The tech. said it looked like we're having a GIRL!!! but we couldn't verify it with any clear shots. After an hour and a half of poking, prodding, walking, and all sorts of jiggling, we win the award for Most Stubborn Bean!
-June 19--Appointment with my OB/GYN. Maybe she'll be nice enough to do an ultrasound and let us know whether it's a hamburger or hot dog??
-July 23--DR's appt. @ 26 weeks 6 days. Check out my blog!

-October 24--Due date

First of all you need to have the attitude that you WILL breastfeed. I am pregnant with my second and fed my 1st son until he was 13 months. You DONT need to supplement with formula! Just make sure you are constantly drinking lots of water and feeding A LOT. The more you feed the more milk you will have. And if you do it right you will have plenty of milk. It is just SO much better for your child and for myself is the only way. My son never even tried formula. I will be very honest with you though. It is NOT easy but worth every bit of determination. The beginning was the worst. I used Lanolin cream, gel pads and lots of breast pads (by Lansinohs in the purple box are the best) and it continuely got better and better. At first I was like "you have to be kidding me!" I read several books that encourage you to give it your all. I recommed you do too. I read a lot of times as I went along for extra help Le Leche League is a great support and looking at their website will help. http://www.llli.org/ It's so important to try at least to feed her the first year. I did not buy a lot of bottles. You won't need too either. The best breast pump is a Medela. A bit pricer I paid 100 for a single automatic pump. It came with bottles and then I transferred to bags and froze in the freezer. You heat it under hot water and use the bottles to feed. This was nice so for my husband, family or babysitter so they could feed him. To just enjoy it or help for you to get away for awhile. I wish you the best for you and your little girl. I'm having another boy due Oct 26th. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. Teresa

This is my second baby and I hope to breastfeed longer. I have a pump from before, I used it when I returned to work. (it is a $40.00 Avent manual pump) I am now a stay at home mom and a student. I plan to use the pump so that others can help, I can ocassionally leave the baby if need be, to keep up my supply, and to use if I am having trouble getting the baby to latch on, etc. I also recomend that if you think that you are going to switch between bottle and breast, use a bottle that is designed to do so. I use Avent and Playtex. They have a wide nipple more simlar to the breast then the little pointy little nipples. My son was able to go between the Avent and me easily since there was little to no difference in the way that he drank from me or the bottle. Also I know Avent specifically market themselves for breastfeeding moms. You may need to suppliment with formula if the baby isn't getting enough calories so bottles would be nice to have for that. I am getting 8-12 of the 4oz bottles. Good luck.

Hi there! - I have no experience on breastfeeding but here's the plan: I plan on breastfeeding for AT LEAST 6 mths, but just like you said, I'm stocking up on 4oz & 8oz bottles just in case breastfeeding doesn't work. If it does, you will use the bottles eventually. As far as the pump, I am getting one so that her daddy can also feed her, but only introducing the bottle after 3 mths of solid breastfeeding so as to not interrupt "the flow" and risk her favoring the bottle over the breast or drying up... Hope it gives you some ideas! :)

I know, I'm amazed that we're already 24 weeks!! So exciting!

I registered for a Medela pump. It's an automatic one but if it's not purchased for me I'll be getting a manual one. I don't plan on pumping the majority of the time so a cheapie pump should be fine!!

How are you feeling?!? Have you had any midwife appointments lately? Mine is tomorrow and I'm pretty excited!!

Advice about breastfeeding: #1, all babies are different. My mom said that with me, after she tried bottles, I wouldnt go back to the breast (guess I was too hungry...?) LOL - With my son, I breastfed full time for about 9 months, and then went down to night time. I wouldnt stock up on a bunch of bottles b/c your baby might be picky about which he/she prefers. I would buy one of maybe a few different kinds of bottles. Maybe your doc could recommend one, but ultimately its gonna be up to your baby! I saw that someone on your page said to do straight breast for at least the first 3 weeks, and I also heard the same thing recently from a lactation specialist when my friend had her baby in may... Pumping might be "IDEAL" but in the "REAL" world, my son wasnt havin a bottle!! I am trying to figure the same thing out myself this time around, b/c if I went anywhere before, my baby had to go, he was attached to my boob, LOL

In the hospitals here, a lactation specialist comes around to show you how to breastfeed, with a few diff techniques/positions. That helped me when my first was born, and I was glad to see them still coming around when my girl friend had her son in may. Maybe you could ask your doc if they visit rooms in the hospital where you live, and prepare a list of concerns/questions you have...

GOOD LUCK, and dont expect ANYTHING b/c it might/might not be what happens for you and your baby. Its a natural process... YOU CAN DO IT

I just read your post on 24 weeks about breastfeeding. Being that this is my first also I'm in the same boat. I registered for a set that includes the breast pump & bottles. I am getting the breast pump just so that my hubby can feed the baby too. Also, I wanted the pump just in case. I'll pump so we can go on a date night or in case I get sick. Hope this helps!!

Have a great rest of your weekend!!!

This is also my first, so take my "advice" with a grain of salt, as it comes second-hand from close friends. :)
I have always heard that you should do straight breast feeding for the first 3 weeks (no bottles at all so that they prefer your breast), then start introducing bottles every once in a while. That way, you will be able to have others feed the baby (if you want to go out for the night, you can be free to be gone for more than a couple of hours - or over night :)) - and someone else can have the option of getting up in the middle of the night every once in a while! :) From what I have heard and experienced with others' babies, they will have a hard time taking a bottle if they haven't ever been introduced to one (so, don't wait until they are with someone else to try a bottle). Also, I have heard very good things about the Modela (I know I totally spelled that wrong, but it's something close to that :)). breast pump.
Anyway, my apologies if I've covered anything that is too "obvious" or that you already knew - good luck! :)
