Week 1-3

Your baby, about 4 months old.
You may be thinking about having children. When planning for a baby, you should evaluate both you and your partners lifestyle to make sure you are both in the best physical and emotional shape. If you are planning a pregnancy, this should be done at least one month, but preferable three months, in advance. Before pregnancy, you should:

  • Quit smoking, refrain from doing drugs and avoid drinking alcohol
  • Be at an ideal weight and eat healthy meals
  • Have an IUD removed and do not take birth control pills

Most women do not know the actual date of conception, but they do know the date of their last menstrual cycle. This is the point from which a pregnancy is dated. Your due date will help your doctor determine when to do certain tests and to evaluate the growth of your baby.

Day one of your cycle is the first day of actual menstrual bleeding. This is when the lining of the uterus is shed. Around day five of your cycle, an egg begins to mature inside of a fluid-filled sac inside of one of the two ovaries. Around day 14, the sac ruptures and releases the egg. Because ovulation normally occurs around day 14, a missed menstrual period about two weeks later will indicate pregnancy. After ejaculation, millions of sperm travel from your vagina to the fallopian tube. Only a few hundred make it to the egg and release enzymes that will allow one of the sperm to penetrate the protective coating of the egg . Once one sperm has penetrated the egg, a change takes place and no other sperm can get inside. This is the moment of fertilization. The body of the sperm then dissolves and the DNA from the sperm fuse with that of the egg.

Because pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last period, for the first two weeks of pregnancy you are not actually pregnant. Your baby will be conceived by the end of the second week. Most women do not even know that they are pregnant at this time because they have not missed a period. Even though you are considered three weeks pregnant, your baby is in the first week of development. At this point of the pregnancy, the fertilized egg is very small and does not look like a fetus or a baby. The fertilized egg is actually a group of cells that continues to multiply and grow very quickly. The fertilized egg divides within a few hours to give a two cell zygote, then a four-cell zygote and after about four days a blastocyst. The blastocyst has approximately one hundred cells! It is size of the head of a pin and is about 0.006 inches long. Even though just a few days old, all DNA information is already there, telling your baby what color of hair to make, what sex to be, and even hair texture, eye color, height, and weight (to a certain degree of course). Amazing stuff, right?

Even though you might not know you are pregnant, there is a lot going on inside of you right now! The sperm has fertilized the egg and the sex is determined at the time of fertilization! A Y-chromosome-bearing sperm will produce a baby boy and an X-chromosome-bearing sperm will produce a baby girl. You may have been aware that you were ovulating, but it is too early for you to notice too many changes. Your breasts have not yet started to enlarge and you are not getting any larger yet. However, sometimes women do notice some slight implantation bleeding or spotting when the fertilized egg implants itself in the uterine cavity.

I have taken several hpt's. All are very, VERY faint positives, blink and you'll miss them. Different brands and everything. My cycle is usually between 27 - 30 days long and I'm on day 34. No idea why my period is m.i. a. My lower back and abdomen are sore and crampy, my breasts are sore and I look like a roadmap with all the prominent blue veins popping up. This will be my third pregnancy if I could get a clear answer. Anyone else having lots of symptoms but not sure about the hpt results??

I am waiting anxiously to see if I am pregnant. I'm excited and nervous, if I am pregnant based on the time we had sex I know it will be a girl. I have 4 boys, and throwing a girl into the mix is nerve wracking. Is anyone else out there waiting

Hi ladies, I'm due for my menstrual tomorrow, so I'm just playing the waiting game here. Hubby and I are working on 1 more to add to the family (as we already have 4, 3 boys and 1 girl). We've been trying for about 8 months now so we'll just have to wait and see what happens!

Beautiful mommy did you have a period? It would be great if we both were going through the same thing so we could compare symptoms. I'm still a nervous wreck. My baby just turned 1 and I feel like it's to soon for another but if it's meant to be now then it will be. I have a increased appetite other than that no symptoms. I am starting my 3rd week, so just waiting...😬

Hello Babylove5.... I am in the exact same situation.... I am soooo nervous..... My period is due on the 17th but I know I'm pregnant.... I can feel it

Thanks babe.... My boobs have been like basketballs since last week.... On 2 occassions I've randomly got that metallic taste.... I've also had slight cramping. I've also been exhausted.... falling asleep instantly. I haven't told anybody yet.... planning to give husband a positive pregnancy test for Father's Day :-) How are you feeling and what's your situation?

  5. babylove5 15 June 2016

That would be a awesome Father's Day present! I'm not due to start for 9 more days. I just have a increased appetite, I did have a unusual pull on my left side the other day it lasted for a few hours. I feel really good and was taking whey protein to build some muscle but now I can't take it until I know if I'm pregnant since it has artificial sweetener. 😒 I wish I wouldn't have spent 45 dollars on it. Will this be your first baby?

I totally forgot about my increased appetite..... I've been having that too. This will be my 3rd.... My boy is 7 and my girl is 4. Do you have any kids?? If so what are their ages? It's winter on this side of the world and i'm spending a lovely day eating and watching tv under a blanket :-)

I have 4 boys, my first born was a girl, and the boys are much easier for me! My daughter we did cheerleading, ballet, and soccer. The boys it's football and soccer! I stay at home with my 3 year old and one year old. I feel like another one this soon might be a little hectic! I was planning on waiting until he was 2. He's my baby right now. It's summer here and hot as heck! I'm wondering am I hungry from running around w the kids or is it pregnancy, that's always my only symptom in the beginning. I have been doing abs so maybe that was the feeling I was having or maybe something internal. All my boys were conceived on the 13th day of my cycle. My daughter was conceived on the 9th and that was when we had sex this time!! Girls are so much harder but much more fun to buy for. If I'm pregnant it's a girl! 🎀🛍

Are you guys hoping for a boy or girl? I'm so craving salt, I just had eggs and hot salsa! Yummy!

  8. babylove5 17 June 2016

It's so funny that before you know if you're pregnant for sure you Hv symptoms which could easily be pregnancy or just your lifestyle. I'll be so glad when I know for sure. If I am pregnant I am going to need a nanny! My hubby is wanting another one but he has no clue how much work it is to be healthy while pregnant and to stay your same size! Hurry up and wait! 😬😬

  9. babylove5 20 June 2016

I am still super hungry! I could get the 5 day early test. I only have 4 days until my period would start. I'm not patient, I really feel like I need to know. If there is anybody else out there waiting let me know how you're doing!

  10. babylove5 21 June 2016

I decided to wait on the early test because I took it with my last boy and it didn't work until the day I missed my period with the dollar store brand. I will just have to wait. 😁

    • Rob4ang 22 June 2016

Hello hello.... Sorry I have been MIA..... I've been down and out with flu..... and yes I took the test over the weekend and there were 2 stripes!!!!! Went for my blood test results yesterday and according to that I am 7-8 weeks already.... OMG!!!! I did not expect that because I had a normal period in May. How accurate are blood tests in determining the stage of your pregnancy? I have a gynae appointment tomorrow and I reaaaaally can't wait for that. I've been so sick and unable to take anything that will help lol.... I totally lost my voice and right now it's back 75%. I really wouldn't mind a boy or a girl..... 2 more days for your test..... can you wait till then??

  11. babylove5 22 June 2016

I had a light bleed while pregnant with my daughter too! It's odd but it can happen and everything be fine. That's sucks to be pregnant and have the flu. I never take the shot because the one time I took it is the only time in my entire life I got the flu. I am not patient but I don't have a choice but to wait for some reason the early test don't work for me. I have to wait until the day I miss. Hope you start feeling better, the immune system is always weaker when pregnant! Can they give you anything for it?
