Week 38

Your baby continues to grow this week and weighs about 6.8 pounds. His crown-to-rump length is still about 14 inches and total length is around 21 inches. Most women do not grow any larger during the last few weeks of their pregnancy. From the top of your uterus to your bellybutton is about 6.5 to 7 inches. You may be very uncomfortable now-you are almost there!

Just before real labor contractions start, you might notice false labor contractions. These should not be confused with Braxton-Hicks contractions. False labor contractions can be as strong as real labor contractions, but do not get closer and may go away if you get up to walk around. Contractions help dilate the cervix and encourage your water to break. Your baby could be born any day now, but only 5% of mothers deliver on their actual due date!

Over the last few weeks of pregnancy, your baby has been building up waste materials in the intestines. This waste material is known as meconium and is greenish-black in color. Meconium is made up of cells that your baby has shed, lanugo and other substances. Meconium is the first waste that your baby will pass after birth. However, sometimes babies pass meconium before delivery and are delivered with greenish-black waste covering their body. Special care must be taken when a baby passes meconium in the womb.

If your baby is a boy, his testes should have descended into his scrotum by this time. When your baby boy is born, both of his testes should be in place. Approximately 1% of babies are born with undescended testes. Because an undescended testis can cause infertility issues and increase the risks of testicular cancer, your baby’s doctor will examine both testes after birth.

The baby’s skull is not fully solid as the five bony plates, known as fontanels (little fountains), are still separate and can be pushed together. Birth may mold and elongate the fetal head, a safety precaution to reduce the skull’s diameter for an easier birth, without damaging the fetal brain. After delivery, the baby’s head returns to a rounded shape. Eyes have no tear ducts yet, they appear a few weeks after birth.

Where is everyone? Are you out having babies??!! I was 1 cm dilated last week but I'm hoping to hold onto this little bean for a few more weeks as all of my kids and I are sick with a cold. I want to disinfect the house before we have a brand new baby in it!

Glad to see you are all hanging in there with me:) I'm estimating another week or so of this cold as the last person in the house just started with it this morning. But we started the stomach virus chain yesterday. So far it has only struck my oldest son; I'm holding my breath that everyone else misses this one:) Why couldn't we run through this in December or January? Ha! How are you ladies feeling? We are really getting down to the wire now:) I'm sure having trouble getting much done. I have to keep stopping to take breaks! Maybe once the little guy drops a little further I'll be able to breath easier and get more done. My Mom and Dad are spending the winter in Florida. They are coming home next week for a few weeks to help out. Hopefully I'll have the energy to sanitize and finally get ready for baby Kade while they are entertaining the other kids!

Oh no...stomach viruses are the worst!! I think you jinxed yourself in your post on week 35 :( We've been healthy here, but there's no little children, since my step-daughter is 18. I've just been dealing with the heartburn/acid reflux, which is really getting old. That's my biggest discomfort. Lately, I've been dealing with bouts of nausea. I feel like I have a decent amount of energy; though, 2 flights of steps with a full laundry basket will make me have to catch my breath lol Other than that, I've been swelling horribly in my feet, ankles, and legs. My husband and I even nicknamed my toes snausages. I'm getting so antsy to start seeing signs of progression toward labor, but I haven't really seen anything yet :(

I probably did jinx myself! My littlest is really sick with a cold now and it is so sad to see him so miserable. Not to mention, Daddy is in the worst phase of it now too and you know how men handle sickness! Lol! As he's whining about needing some quiet time to rest I try to remind him that I have it too... and I'm cooking and cleaning for six... and taking care of all six... and working full time... and getting ready for our new little one... oh, and I'm 8+ months preggers - but hey, go ahead and take a nap; you deserve it. Too funny! I'm hoping that you muster up something too with all of those stairs! My Braxton hicks are getting so intense that I swear I'm in labor 15 times a day. This is why I never know when to go to the hospital and I don't want to pay the medical bill for a false alarm:) You can't be too far away now!

Angel - Thinking of you. Hope all is well! Just wondering if you are holding a baby:)

Had my weekly appointment today. Not much progress noted in internal exam. Soft cervix still long and closed . Cephalic presentation at -2 station. My doctor asked me come bk after a week. And to plan for c-section if things don't progress on their own:(.

Thanks, kentsmommy! No baby here yet. He must be really cozy in there. I had an appointment yesterday, but since they don't check for progress, I have no idea how things are looking. Just that he seems to be about where he needs to be for weight. He's been head down since the anatomical survey, so that's good too. And his heartbeat is still good and strong! Avg2012, I'm hoping things progress for you, so you can have your baby naturally :)

May be TMI but I started shedding my mucus plug over the weekend. I'm trying to talk the little guy into staying put for a couple more weeks though so we can all get over this stupid cold or whatever we have. Ha! It's getting really hard to get up in the morning and come to work these days. I just want to stay in the warm house in my PJ's! How are you all feeling? I've been looking for a baby announcement on here:)

  12. june2012 23 February 2015

38weeks today, and only a maximum of 14days left for me. This journey is nearly coming to an end. Kentsmommy- i am also looking forward to baby announcements in here, haha...
