Week 38

Your baby continues to grow this week and weighs about 6.8 pounds. His crown-to-rump length is still about 14 inches and total length is around 21 inches. Most women do not grow any larger during the last few weeks of their pregnancy. From the top of your uterus to your bellybutton is about 6.5 to 7 inches. You may be very uncomfortable now-you are almost there!

Just before real labor contractions start, you might notice false labor contractions. These should not be confused with Braxton-Hicks contractions. False labor contractions can be as strong as real labor contractions, but do not get closer and may go away if you get up to walk around. Contractions help dilate the cervix and encourage your water to break. Your baby could be born any day now, but only 5% of mothers deliver on their actual due date!

Over the last few weeks of pregnancy, your baby has been building up waste materials in the intestines. This waste material is known as meconium and is greenish-black in color. Meconium is made up of cells that your baby has shed, lanugo and other substances. Meconium is the first waste that your baby will pass after birth. However, sometimes babies pass meconium before delivery and are delivered with greenish-black waste covering their body. Special care must be taken when a baby passes meconium in the womb.

If your baby is a boy, his testes should have descended into his scrotum by this time. When your baby boy is born, both of his testes should be in place. Approximately 1% of babies are born with undescended testes. Because an undescended testis can cause infertility issues and increase the risks of testicular cancer, your baby’s doctor will examine both testes after birth.

The baby’s skull is not fully solid as the five bony plates, known as fontanels (little fountains), are still separate and can be pushed together. Birth may mold and elongate the fetal head, a safety precaution to reduce the skull’s diameter for an easier birth, without damaging the fetal brain. After delivery, the baby’s head returns to a rounded shape. Eyes have no tear ducts yet, they appear a few weeks after birth.

Where is everyone? Are you out having babies??!! I was 1 cm dilated last week but I'm hoping to hold onto this little bean for a few more weeks as all of my kids and I are sick with a cold. I want to disinfect the house before we have a brand new baby in it!

  2. AVG2012 15 February 2015

oh hope you feel better soon Kentsmommy. fingers crossed for you until u r able to sanitize :) your home.

  3. angelfree77 16 February 2015

Feel better soon, kentsmommy! No baby here yet. I think he is quite content where he is. 38w2d today!

  4. kentsmommy 16 February 2015

Glad to see you are all hanging in there with me:) I'm estimating another week or so of this cold as the last person in the house just started with it this morning. But we started the stomach virus chain yesterday. So far it has only struck my oldest son; I'm holding my breath that everyone else misses this one:) Why couldn't we run through this in December or January? Ha! How are you ladies feeling? We are really getting down to the wire now:) I'm sure having trouble getting much done. I have to keep stopping to take breaks! Maybe once the little guy drops a little further I'll be able to breath easier and get more done. My Mom and Dad are spending the winter in Florida. They are coming home next week for a few weeks to help out. Hopefully I'll have the energy to sanitize and finally get ready for baby Kade while they are entertaining the other kids!

  5. angelfree77 17 February 2015

Oh no...stomach viruses are the worst!! I think you jinxed yourself in your post on week 35 :( We've been healthy here, but there's no little children, since my step-daughter is 18. I've just been dealing with the heartburn/acid reflux, which is really getting old. That's my biggest discomfort. Lately, I've been dealing with bouts of nausea. I feel like I have a decent amount of energy; though, 2 flights of steps with a full laundry basket will make me have to catch my breath lol Other than that, I've been swelling horribly in my feet, ankles, and legs. My husband and I even nicknamed my toes snausages. I'm getting so antsy to start seeing signs of progression toward labor, but I haven't really seen anything yet :(

  6. kentsmommy 17 February 2015

I probably did jinx myself! My littlest is really sick with a cold now and it is so sad to see him so miserable. Not to mention, Daddy is in the worst phase of it now too and you know how men handle sickness! Lol! As he's whining about needing some quiet time to rest I try to remind him that I have it too... and I'm cooking and cleaning for six... and taking care of all six... and working full time... and getting ready for our new little one... oh, and I'm 8+ months preggers - but hey, go ahead and take a nap; you deserve it. Too funny! I'm hoping that you muster up something too with all of those stairs! My Braxton hicks are getting so intense that I swear I'm in labor 15 times a day. This is why I never know when to go to the hospital and I don't want to pay the medical bill for a false alarm:) You can't be too far away now!

  7. kentsmommy 18 February 2015

Uneventful appointment today:) I scheduled the next three appointments - hopefully I make it to all of them:)

  8. kentsmommy 19 February 2015

Angel - Thinking of you. Hope all is well! Just wondering if you are holding a baby:)

  9. AVG2012 20 February 2015

Had my weekly appointment today. Not much progress noted in internal exam. Soft cervix still long and closed . Cephalic presentation at -2 station. My doctor asked me come bk after a week. And to plan for c-section if things don't progress on their own:(.

  10. angelfree77 20 February 2015

Thanks, kentsmommy! No baby here yet. He must be really cozy in there. I had an appointment yesterday, but since they don't check for progress, I have no idea how things are looking. Just that he seems to be about where he needs to be for weight. He's been head down since the anatomical survey, so that's good too. And his heartbeat is still good and strong! Avg2012, I'm hoping things progress for you, so you can have your baby naturally :)

  11. kentsmommy 22 February 2015

May be TMI but I started shedding my mucus plug over the weekend. I'm trying to talk the little guy into staying put for a couple more weeks though so we can all get over this stupid cold or whatever we have. Ha! It's getting really hard to get up in the morning and come to work these days. I just want to stay in the warm house in my PJ's! How are you all feeling? I've been looking for a baby announcement on here:)

  12. june2012 23 February 2015

38weeks today, and only a maximum of 14days left for me. This journey is nearly coming to an end. Kentsmommy- i am also looking forward to baby announcements in here, haha...

  13. kentsmommy 23 February 2015

Hi June! Still hanging in there I see:) Can't believe that its almost over! Good luck - And I'm crossing my fingers for March for you! Although it could be a leap baby for either you or Angel:)

  14. stacey3 15 September 2016

Hello week 38! 14 more days! I am going for my 38 week check up today. I am excited to get checked. If I am dilating, maybe I can talk them into a stretch and sweep??? I don't know if they will do it today or next week, but it doesn't hurt to find out. My contractions seemed to slow down yesterday and stop even though I went on a long walk and got some love from my husband. What is up with that? I thought they would get stronger. I slept so good last night! I fell asleep around 9:30 and woke up at 11 to use the bathroom and get a drink of milk because of my heartburn, but I went back to sleep and slept the rest of the night, woke up at 6:15 this morning! I finally feel so rested! I hope that happens tonight too! It feels so good to get a full night of sleep...aaaaaaahhhhhhh!

  15. mumof3tobe4 15 September 2016

I'm really struggling to sleep now it's so difficult to get comfy for me I go scan again on Monday or Tuesday and go from that if above 10th centile they leave me if under book in for induction missed my scan yesterday due to transport or would of known today hopefully baby will move enough just to have a stretch n sweep instead I'd be amazed of above 10th centile how has ur appointment gone ?

  16. stacey3 15 September 2016

Appointment went well today. Dilated to 2. They did a stretch and sweep, but it didn't do anything. Next week at my appointment they will strip my membranes, so that's exciting! I really hope I keep dilating. I think he wants to stay tucked into mommy's belly as long as possible! After my sweep, I did lose some of my mucus plug. Soon it's time for baby! I'm feeling ready.

  17. mumof3tobe4 16 September 2016

Stretch and sweep is stripping membranes isn't it ? I've no idea how far dilated I am I suppose nothing since baby not way into pelvic bone s+s can take 48 hours to work so may go yet it will be me going after due date lol this baby gives me so much pain but really doesn't want to get ready to leave me

  18. stacey3 16 September 2016

That's what I thought, that it is the same. She said I was not very soft and couldn't do a very effective job. At 39 weeks, they usually strip membranes, so if it didn't work, which I'm sure it didn't, it should do something next week. My mother's birthday is the 25 th of September and my father's birthday is the 27 th of September. I'm really hoping this baby doesn't come on either of them. I was hoping to be more dilated so that the s&s would work this week. Oh well. I just want to be induced, like I was with my other pregnancies. It is so much nicer to have a date when baby comes. You have a scan next week? When they do that, will they be scheduling your induction?

  19. mumof3tobe4 16 September 2016

If baby is under 10th centile they want me in for induction however they may give me s+s even if baby isn't in pelvic area so I don't have to be induced if I can help it but I just don't want to be induced if over 10th they just leave me ....when I had s+s with 2nd he was in simular position to this one high up not dilated stretched me to 2cm but only just said itl proberly not work and was in labour 12 hours later so it may work for u ...I think this baby seems to be going more higher

  20. stacey3 16 September 2016

My baby was higher too....I'm gerontology worried because i was shopping earlier walking a lot, and only felt a few contractions. I just got home 30 minutes ago, and my contractions are 7 minutes apart. I really didn't think the s&s would work...I don't really know if it did work, but I've had 3 in the last 30 minutes. They were pretty strong. I am just going to continue keeping track. I have to get a few things ready before baby comes, and my girls cheer this tonight for a football game. I don't know.....

    • stacey3 16 September 2016

Not gerontology...I dont know how that got in there. It was supposed to say getting...lol!

  21. stacey3 17 September 2016

Well, they got closer together and I hopped into the tub to see if they would calm or get stronger. They slowed down and got more irregular. False labor, or braxton hicks. No baby! Oh well! I have a few things to get ready before that happens anyway. I got nervous enough yesterday to get my bag packed up a little more. I don't have everything ready, but it was a definate wake up call for me. I have a ton of laundry to catch up on before baby comes. It always feels good to be caught up on that, but I have been putting it off a lot lately since it is downstairs. I need to get on it before baby comes. That's what I will be spending most of my time on until the baby comes. Fun fun! It's crazy how much laundry I have with a family of 5. Add one more into that mix, and it is only going to get worse. Oh the joys!

  22. mumof3tobe4 17 September 2016

Awww bless ya it maybe get better unless baby is here now I have a feeling my baby can't engage itself as she's really trying just not happening causes huge pain at the time too just hoping I she will as don't fancy c sec

  23. mumof3tobe4 17 September 2016

Well my waters have just broke still don't think baby is engaged il let u know how I get on and hopefully ul of told me u had baby by the time I reply

  24. stacey3 18 September 2016

Lol! Great for you! Let me know what happens! So far just lots of inconsistent contractions for me...bummer! I hope everything goes good for you!

  25. mumof3tobe4 18 September 2016

Only 1-2cm at moment they said my waters ain't gone but I know there leaking lol on ward to c what happens contractions r still coming though

  26. stacey3 18 September 2016

Thanks for the update! I'm checking in to see what's going on with you. 1-2? Are they just going to induce you now that your water broke?! Exciting! I'm having some horrible back pain tonight. I am having contractions too, but the back pain is so bad, it woke me up. The baby must be sitting on nerves or something. I got up and walked around and I'm changing positions, hoping that makes a difference so that can fall badly asleep. Please no labor for me tonight! Lol!

  27. stacey3 18 September 2016

Well, i was able to fall back asleep. Everything is calm. How is everything with you? Do you have a baby in your arms yet? What happened? I keep checking on here for an update. Lol!

  28. mumof3tobe4 18 September 2016

I have a beautiful baby girl willow-jade 5lb10oz got from one ward to another in 8 mins an deliver her from being 2cm dilated after pains r quite bad

  29. stacey3 18 September 2016

CONGRATULATIONS!!! So happy for you! That is such a pretty name! Hope you start feeling better! After pains are horrible!

  30. stacey3 18 September 2016

I lost a big piece of my plug this morning. Ever since, I have been having pretty big contractions. I told my hubby to pack his bag but he must think nothing is going to happen, because he is messing around outside. Baby might be coming. I have been so confused about it though...out of the tub, contractions closer and stronger. Heading in to get checked

  31. stacey3 19 September 2016

Contractions have become Irregular. Yay...guess we have to wait a while longer.

  32. mumof3tobe4 19 September 2016

Mine was irregular never regular as such some 10 mins some 7 mins it was only when got to 2cm and all thinned out etc we just managed to get to labour ward before delivering I'm hoping this is the day for u

  33. stacey3 19 September 2016

How is your sweet baby doing? How is your recovery going? What is your labor story? I want to hear everything! So exciting! Overnight, my contractions seemed to stop. This morning I have had a couple. I am going on a long walk today and I plan on pounding my stairs a bunch. I tried sex last night, but it did nothing. I'm ready to have this baby, but he will come when he is ready. On the bright side, everything is packed up and ready for the moment I have to go in. However my hubby hasn't gotten his stuff packed up yet.

  34. mumof3tobe4 20 September 2016

Recovery isn't to bad baby cut me a little so quite sore after pains r horrid this time round but due to contractions all being around pelvic area it's all in same place labour story...waters broke around 12am had afew contractions nothing bad went into hospital due to not knowing if baby was engaged so had scan head down apparently waters didn't break (but didn't break any other time while actually in labour) I was 1-2cm dilated after being checked I was told I could stay on ward or go home being an hour away thought it was safer to stay so hubby went home and looked after kiddies When woke up they checked me started having bad pain too was only 2cm dilated but really soft I was offered pethadine so we went to labour ward so I could have pethadine I didn't get it I got a baby instead after I did manage to get abit of gas n air though went 2-10cm within afew mins

  35. stacey3 20 September 2016

Wow! That's crazy! I have no idea what to expect with this one. My contractions are strong enough to take my breath away. Had sex tonight too. Hubby was funny about it, but I told him it was doctors orders..lol! He said "2 nights in a row? Are you sure?" Lol! I spent the day shopping. Walked and walked and walked some more... Had some sharp pains. Felt like baby's head was trying to come out. Hurt so bad, but went away. I spent some time on the ball and going up and down my steps. Now I'm just having really painful contractions that are irregular. I am ready to give up. Maybe what I really need to do is just rest and he will come. I don't know.

  36. stacey3 20 September 2016

Oh, and hubby still has not packed his stuff. He must think we have lots of time.

  37. mumof3tobe4 20 September 2016

It is rough going having contractions on n off all the time hopefully itl all help for the real thing

  38. stacey3 20 September 2016

True! I have an hour drive to the hospital, so hopefully my labor doesn't go too fast when it does really start. Lol!

  39. mumof3tobe4 20 September 2016

I'd of not made an half hour drive if they sent me home that night time before having willow-jade hope u can make it in time

  40. stacey3 21 September 2016

My contractions are completely irregular again. Some are very painful, others are not. I have done a ton of stuff the last week hoping to kick start the labor. I am just going to be spending my time relaxing tomorrow. I am so tired! 8 more days until my due date. I will get checked thursday and find out what I am at. At least baby is super active. He loves moving around in my belly, which I love. I am going to miss this. My husband is planning on having a vasectomy done shortly after the birth of this baby. Makes me sad and happy at the same time. I love having a baby move inside me, so it will be sad that I will never get to feel this again, but I am happy that I never have to put my body through this again.

  41. mumof3tobe4 22 September 2016

Hope baby comes real soon for u vasectomy make a it so final not to have any more children it's quite overwhelming to even think about it even when u don't want anymore

  42. stacey3 22 September 2016

Yes, final for us. No more babies. Makes me sad, but I can look forward to what is next though. I have been having contractions tonight, but I'm sure it is nothing. Just like every time. More pressure though. I can't wait for my appointment tomorrow. I would like to figure out if I am dilating more or not. She will strip my membranes tomorrow regardless of what is going on. Too bad I couldn't just talk her into keeping me and inducing me. That would be amazing!
