Week 39

Your baby’s crown-to-rump length at this time is approximately 14.4 inches and the total length is approximately 21.5 inches. The average baby weighs a little more than 7 pounds now and is preparing for birth. You are probably as big as you are going to get and may be uncomfortable now. Most women gain between 25 and 35 pounds during their pregnancy. Your uterus is about 7-8 inches above your bellybutton now.

Although your baby continues to grow and develop inside of your uterus, there is not much room for him to move about. All of your baby’s organ systems are now complete and the lungs were the last to fully mature.

If you are uncomfortable with your pregnancy at this time, you are not alone. Most women are ready to deliver their babies. It would be very unusual for you to not be uncomfortable at this time. Your uterus has grown a lot and now fills your entire pelvis and abdomen. Try not to ask your doctor to induce you, unless it is medically necessary. Your cervix is ripening in preparation for delivery and your bladder is under a lot of pressure. You may feel nervous about the upcoming labor. You will know when you are in labor because contractions will get worse when you move around and they will also get stronger and more frequent. Other signs of labor are the breaking of your water or a bloody show as the mucus that plugged your cervix becomes dislodged.

Most of the lanugo on your baby should be gone by now. Your baby still may have some on his shoulders and in the creases of his body. Your baby’s toenails have reached the end of his toes. The umbilical cord is about a half inch thick and may be wrapped around him. The umbilical cord still supplies the baby with nutrients that he needs. After delivery, your baby’s umbilical cord will be clamped and cut. After it is cut, he will be an independent human being and must perform all of his body functions on his own. Your baby will get antibodies from your body that give his immune system a boost.

Can't believe it is 39 weeks for you!!! Any contractions yet? It can't be long:)

  2. angelfree77 23 February 2015

I know...it's so crazy! I can't wait!! No contractions yet. Really no signs of labor.

  3. angelfree77 25 February 2015

So, my belly has drawn forward. Is that a sign that labor is close? I have an OB appointment today, so maybe I'll see how long they'll let me go before they want to induce. I don't want to be induced.

  4. kentsmommy 25 February 2015

Good luck at your appt! They may strip your membranes today to try to get things going. I was induced with my first and I'll never do that again unless there is a health risk to me or the baby. That was the most painful and long labor I've had. They thought I was 42 weeks but I had 35 day cycles back then so I think the dates were skewed since they base them on a 28 day cycle and the first day of your last cycle. This time I had an ultrasound to date the pregnancy very early which I think is more accurate. I know that the last weeks are miserable but I would say that it is worth the wait to not be induced if possible. My other two labors were a breeze in comparison to that induction. I don't mean to scare you but I wish someone would have warned me:) Let me know what they tell you today. So exciting!!!

  5. angelfree77 25 February 2015

Don't worry...you aren't scaring me! I have heard that about inductions before and I already told them that I wanted to avoid induction unless it was medically necessary. Our 'plan' is to go without any kind of medication, so I really want to avoid anything that will make it harder to follow through on that. They didn't do anything special today. They just said that if I'm back next week, they'll check my cervix, which may be enough to tip me over the edge. They don't consider me late until I have gone a full week after my due date. My next appointment is Tuesday, so I'll be 40+2 then. I'm pretty sure that our 'true' due date falls anywhere between the 26th-29th, because we were trying to conceive and I was tracking everything at the time.

  6. kentsmommy 25 February 2015

Nice! It's good that you know when. I was nursing and did not start my cycle yet when I found out I was pregnant this time around so I had no idea when it happened. That's why I had the ultrasound. From what I read, sounds like the early ultrasound date is pretty accurate. I had an appt this morning too - same old thing; weight, blood pressure, measurement, heartbeat. All 5 minutes:) My next one is next Thursday at 38 + 2. Hope to see an update with progress from you soon:) I've been having mega contractions (6 within a half an hour last night) but they disappeared when I got up to take a shower. It drives me nuts because I always assume that its false labor but then start to wonder 'what if this is real?' Doc said this morning to call if I have more than 4 in an hour... I laughed because that happens every day.

  7. JDH 25 February 2015

39 weeks tomorrow! I have an appointment in the morning and I'm trying to decide if I want my midwife to check me or not. I'm a little curious but I know it's still early. I'd just love to have a baby this week!!!

  8. kentsmommy 26 February 2015

JDH - I wouldn't say that you are early:) Good luck at your appt! Hope to see some good news from you soon!

  14. stacey3 22 September 2016

39 weeks today! Going in for my appointment this afternoon and I am so ready for baby to come! I feel like he is going to be bigger than the girls were. Their heads were dropped and putting pressure down there for a couple weeks before birth. This baby goes low, but ends up bouncing back up. Puts pressure but doesn't engage in my pelvis. Wondering what that means...probably nothing. I am ready for him to come, even if he wants to stay tucked in and cozy. We will see what the midwife says today.

  15. stacey3 22 September 2016

The Midwife said she was going to strip my membranes, but it didn't feel like she did anything. I am dilated to around a 3 or 4. Baby won't drop. Guess it is just a waiting game. I am so upset. I guess I went to the wrong midwife...the other one does a better job. Anyway, they won't talk about inducing until next week Thursday. Yay......

  16. mumof3tobe4 22 September 2016

Bless ya I'm hoping next time u r on hear we have better news of a baby being born lol ..babies don't tend to go down till labour willow-jade was at the side n didn't engage till labour but getting to 3-4cm worn out baby engaged is fab ur nearly in established labour usually once a 5cm it's all active from there I'd be more concerned that ud have a very fast delivery

  17. mumof3tobe4 24 September 2016

Since u havnt commented on here I'm hoping it's good news next time u do il keep checking in to c how ur getting on its time he comes so u can enjoy ur time with him it's so nice to have a baby around again

  18. stacey3 24 September 2016

I am so happy for you being able to snuggle that little girl! I hope everything is going good. How is breastfeeding going? How is she sleeping? How are you? How are you healing? I have just been having more of the same contractions. I scheduled my appointment for Tuesday instead of Thursday for next week. Hopefully she actually does strip my membranes. I want this baby to come, but I understand that he will come when he is ready. My body will eventually kick him out. I need to just be patient and let it happen when it happens. I go on here every day! I am excited for when it does happen. At least I've had enough time to get everything ready and even got extra stuff done. I ended up making a bunch of freezer meals. Makes me feel good to know that I just have to pull them out and heat them up. I feel so happy tonight, which is a change for me. I have been on edge all week. Waiting and wondering when and if the baby will come. I am giving up on worrying and anticipating. It will happen when it happens. Nothing I do will bring him down and out. I went on a long walk today, harvested beans and tomatoes from my garden, made Apple Crisp and a big homemade dinner and cleaned. It Did nothing but tire me out. Made me sore!

  19. stacey3 25 September 2016

Well, still nothing. 4 days left till my due date. 4th baby....thought he would come early because of that. Oh well. I may end up induced anyway! I wouldn't be upset about that. I had a dream last night that I went in for my check up and ended up staying and having the baby. It was so real! At least I got to dream about it happening...lol! I walked a bunch yesterday. I'm getting some good exercise. It is finally nice enough outside. Not scorching hot and uncomfortable. I am considering mopping my floors on my hands and knees tonight. Today is my mom's birthday, so I'm going to take it easy today so he doesn't decide that today is his birthday. I want him to have his own special day.

  20. stacey3 26 September 2016

Ok, no baby yet. My 3 yr old loked at me today all serious and said "Are you going to have that baby?" I think she is getting sick of waiting...lol! 3 more days til my due date. Last night I was having some major contractions, but nothing came of them. I am tired. I have no extra energy. Tomorrow I have my check up. Hopefully something good comes from it. I am really just hoping I can set a date to get baby out. I don't want him growing in my belly any more! He feels huge!

  21. mumof3tobe4 27 September 2016

How did ur check up go ? Sorry not been on much been checking just not a lot of time to reply Willow-Jade is great she was feeding 3 hourly but down to 2 hourly I don't breast feed I've never breast fed any of my kiddies I've never felt able to she sleeps pretty well started to have an hour up here n there during day but only wakes for feeds during night all in all she's a really good baby was told to feed 3 hourly due to being small n gaining weight etc she went down to 5lb4 on day 5 and 3 days later has gone up above her 5lb10 birth weight so doing great

  22. stacey3 27 September 2016

That's great! Well, my appointment went good. Last week, she did not strip my membranes. Today, the midwife I had stripped the heck out of them and told me to go home and have sex, pump, and come back with contractions at least 6 minutes apart and she would break my water. That's the plan. Hopefully it works!

  23. stacey3 28 September 2016

At the hospital. Got an epidural, waiting for baby to come! My contractions were horrible when I came in. Now I can't feel them.

  24. stacey3 28 September 2016

Baby boy was born at 2:32 am. He is 8 lb 2.5 oz and 20 inches. Yay! Labor went really quick! So happy to be holding him in my arms! Still have no name picked. Lol.

  25. mumof3tobe4 28 September 2016

Awww yeay congratulations took his time in coming lol at least when u pick a name itl suit baby knowing what he looks like I was always scared to have epidural not just the needle but tends to slow labour too but when quick tends to be so painful I'm sure ul update more when u get chance so happy for u xx

  26. stacey3 29 September 2016

Thanks! The epidural was great! The labor/delivery went so fast! I ended up tearing and needing 7 stitches. Even though that happened, the delivery was good. He is healthy and doing really good. I'm glad he came when he did. He was a good sized baby. Any bigger, and I can't imagine the stitches I would have needed! He latched on and is breast feeding really good. Super sweet baby...

  27. stacey3 30 September 2016

I will put on my birth story after I get home and have a chance to settle down and relax. I get to go home tomorrow. My girls are so antsy for us to be home with little Levi. I'm excited for it too. This has been really hard on my 3 yr old. She has never been away from me more than one night. Makes me so sad for her...

  28. mumof3tobe4 01 October 2016

Lovely name my 2 year olds had a hard time adjusting got home the day after and he was so nervous he pulled himself away to a corner he's done pretty well with baby but he pulled himself away from me to its only yesterday and today he's cuddled or kissed me usually he's too loving but wouldn't let me pick him up or do anything for him

  29. stacey3 01 October 2016

Awe...well I went downstairs to do laundry, came back up and my 3 yr old was holding him.....I need to be more careful not to leave her alone with him at all...

  30. stacey3 01 October 2016

At least he is warming up to you now. I hope everything else is going great! I have 11 ounces of milk frozen already since yesterday. I just got done pumping my right breast and got 3 and a half ounces out of it. I'm going to start pumping my left now. I have to pump them at different settings because my right pumps out easier than my left. We have had so much company that I have not been able to nap since we got home. I'm hoping to take a nap in a little while. It won't be long until the next company comes. Gotta love it!

  31. mumof3tobe4 01 October 2016

We only had my mum in law here so not so bad we had a day where my sister was here my mum and her friend who brought her here and midwife just abit to much for me but been quiet since which is nice my 2 year old tries to pick baby up but he squeezes her he's not always very nice towards her either but it's nice to have my boy back wasn't nice when he didn't want me

  32. stacey3 02 October 2016

I bet that makes you feel better. It is so hard to teach a 2 to 3 year old that baby isn't a doll. I wish we didn't have so many visitors. It seems like every time someone leaves, someone else comes.

  33. mumof3tobe4 02 October 2016

I love the peace n quiet just to get into a routine I've found it a little harder this time not sure if cos there's a smaller age gap or if it's cos there's 4 of them 2-3 was pretty simple

  34. stacey3 03 October 2016

So far I don't know how this is going to be. The little guy is so content and snuggly. He is amazing!

  35. stacey3 03 October 2016

Today is my first day alone with little guy and my 3 year old. So far everything is going okay. He is sleeping, we ate breakfast and I'm pumping. I'm going to have to do some wash since he is a little pee boy and likes to spray everything. I found out that my right breast pumps out amazingly fast, but I can't get much to pump out of my left side. I think the size of the nipple funnel thingy is too big. Maybe I should just pump my right and feed him on my left? I'm trying to get a good pile of milk in the freezer so I'm prepared for anything. I had to get 7 stitches because I tore since he came so fast. It feels like they are ripping out when I stand up or move around. Every pregnancy, labor and delivery are different! I am sad that I will never have another. I have some good stories to tell. I feel so blessed and thankful to have my children. They are everything to me.
