i heard that sitting with your legs crossed during pregnancy can risk the chances of the umbilical (sp) cord to wrap around the babys neck, how many of you sit with your legs crossed & did it ever do harm to your child? also it dont take very long for my foot to fall asleep when i sit with my legs crossed, is this normal caise of the blood flow?
I’ve never heard of that risk…..and to me it sounds kinda iffy as to realistic, but I can’t say for sure either way. I don’t think it would have any factor in that….
But I sit with my legs crossed all the time and I did the same with my daughter and she was fine too. As for the numbness in your feet—this happens to me a lot too and it is because of decreased blood flow. As long as there is no extreme, sudden swelling or pain along with the numbness, it should be fine.
My doc said I should avoid crossing my legs. It’s not because of umbilical cord though – he said it is easy to get blood clots during pregnancy so you should keep your body relaxed and loose, in posture and clothing, so blood can flow freely. The only thing that can make the umbilical cord to suddenly wrap the baby is when you are lying down and suddenly change position – it is advisable to sit up and then turn to the other side. And also, always take your side and then get up from the bed. Hope this helps.
ive never heard that either. i know that how you sit can affect blood supply but not tangle a cord. it sounds alot like the old wives tale if you raise your arms over your head when youre pregnant the cord will wrap around the baby’s neck. blood circulation is probably why your foot is falling asleep. it happens to me all the time, even when im not pregnant. i dont know for sure if there is truth in that. but i think if there were, the dr. wouldve mentioned it to me.
I’m pretty sure that its an old wive’s tale not to cross your legs because the cord could wrap around the baby’s neck, however I’ve heard that it is bad for your own circulation and can lead to varicose veins. I’m trying to “teach” myself not to sit with my legs crossed – its getting more and more difficult as I get bigger anyways.
The other ladies are definitely right, its just an old wives tale. The only reason to not cross your legs would be for your own circulation, which I’m guessing is probably where this wives tale came from to begin with. Anyway, definitely no way that us doing any movement with our arms or legs would have any effect on the baby’s cord whatsoever. They are completely unrelated and its impossible for leg crossing to make a cord just suddenly wrap around a neck! Just ignore all the crazy stuff people tell you when you’re pregnant. People seem to love telling pregnant women scary, and usually incorrect, information. If it sounds questionable to you, you are most likely right. Try to just enjoy your pregnancy and ignore all the crazy stuff =) !
