Is it normal for a 6 mo. old to nurse for only 5-10 mins at a time? I only give Kennedy 1 meal a day (1 cube of solids) and she is exclusively bf’ing the rest of the time. She is only in the 25th-50th percentile for weight and the dr. isnt worried but she only nurses for a short period of time and only 6-8 X a day (she sleeps from 7pm-8am)….

LJess, sorry I have no experience with nursing two babies, but kudos to you for adopting. Do you have a lactation consultant you can talk to about that?

Oh and I can pump 3 oz out of the left breast and only 1- 1-1/2 oz out of the right. Do I need to worry about this inabalance of production? How can I balance it out? Should I feed her the left breast first and let her finish the other to build supply or the other way around?

kebler98 – I completely understand you. I know how hard it is. I know you are doing the best you can. You know one or two bottles won’t hurt your baby. In my book, any breastfeeding is good. Don’t give up. Do the best you can and know you are doing just that. As for gaining weight, how is your baby with solids. Six months is a great time to start if you haven’t. The combination of breastmilk, formula and solids should help. And hey, maybe your baby is just a small guy. My son eats like there is no tomorrow and is only 24lbs at 16months. He has his dad’s metabolism. I wish I did… HAHA! In all honesty unless he’s losing weight I wouldn’t be too worried. Is he healthy, active and reaching his milestones. If so then you are doing it right.

jandrews nurse nurse nurse is the best thing but I also like fermented oats during those rough patches. That is old fashions oats soaked in water over night. You can also take fenugreek if you think you need that much help. As long as little one is having atleast 5-6 wet diapers a day. I found it interesting because I was never sure what their idea was for a wet diaper and found that it is 3 table spoons worth so if you put that in a diaper you will know how much should be there.

xpecting1: How long ago did you stop feeding? It took my sister about 4 months before she didnt have milk after she stopped feeding her daughter. Maybe it is a clogged milk duct? Maybe try massaging it under a warm shower and seeing if you can break it up. I would say get it checked by your Dr just in case but i think it would probably be just old milk in there.

Good Morning Ladies! So, I got big news! I’m pregnant! I got my positive this morning. I am due with baby number 2 on January 2, 2010. It’s crazy. I didn’t think it would happen so soon. Especially since Kekoa is still breastfeeding. He is turning 18months on the fourth. I was wanting him to self wean but I don’t think he is any time soon. He wants to eat like every two or three hours. He even wakes up once a night to feed. So, I’m going to see what I can do to only nurse at night and before nap. We’ll see if that will go over well. HAHA! I want him completely weaned months before I’m due so he won’t feel jealous of the next one. WOW! I’m still in shock

baby-m-and-m, persist with the breast as often as you can; Baby might just come around to the idea of nursing. My LO sometimes seems less keen on bf for a while, but then comes good again. Keep trying!

Natesmamma – My son wouldn’t latch on in the beginning either! He was almost two months before he latched on. It sucks pumping around the clock. Have you tried lately to get him to latch on? I truly believe some babies just aren’t ready yet and eventually get it. It was a miracle that Kekoa did. It was all on accident as well. I was fed up with pumping and the tears. One day after a shower I was laying on the bed with him and he latched on himself. If you haven’t tried lately, try, your baby might surprise you! It is much easier to just nurse then having to rely on pumping. Good luck! There used to be a E pumping section too cause it is actually very common. They may give you additional support!

I would recommend giving her some extra watered down cereal or some cereal with breastmilk in bottle at bedtime (like 1/4 tsp to 6 oz. – makes them fuller, longer – and do you give her nice warm bath before bed?

1byFaith- My son did that in the beginning. I used a paci for about 6 weeks to help him soothe. After that he found his hand and could self soothe. I didn’t want him getting too attached to the paci so I took it away when he found another way to ease the suck reflex. Some mom’s prefer the paci, some prefer the thumb…it’s really a personal thing. My son sucks his first 3 fingers…it’s pretty funny. My daughter never had a paci and sucked on her wrist. Each child is different. Good luck!
