gonnab4 – There are plenty of websites that will tell you if it’s ok during breastfeeding. As for alcohol. It demends on how often you need to feed and how much you are drinking. It metabolizes out of your milk just like your blood. So, a glass of wine will be out of the milk in an hour give or take, depending on how you metabolize it. If you feed your baby and then have a glass of wine or a beer then you should be fine by the next feed. If you are planning on getting trashed then you might want to prepare some bottles for that evening. As for BC, any hormone based BC will get into the milk. Estrogen can have an effect on supply (ask Emilee) so that is why the pill is out. There are hormone free IUD’s that your doctor can insert for you. They last five years I believe. For me, it’s good ol’ fashion condems. We aren’t very active now with two boys under 3 in the house but I do want a third in the coming years so I’ll do something a little more long term the next time around.

number2luv, I have a 19 month old nearly 20 month old and a 4 week old baby. I fell pregnant again whilst breast feeding my son when he was 10 months old. I carried on feeding him until he was 15 months. I never noticed a difference in milk supply and I just carried on feeding as normal. I stopped at 15 months due to my nipples being really sensitive by this point James was only feeding for 5 mins on a bedtime so I didn’t feel as though I was depriving him. I would just carry on feeding as normal if I was you.

sydneemay – Thanks! That makes me feel better that yours was 13 months. I do hope that is what happens, like it will just click some day very soon and she will just start preferring the solids more.

Kelley I go through this a lot with my baby. She’s even gone 14 days without a bm. Now. At 5 months she goes about every three days. I know its easier said than done but if she’s not uncomfortable leave well enough alone. Breast milk is so good for babies and so easily digested there is sometimes no waste. It really seems to go either way cause my son pooped every feed.

Casen, do what you need to do but definately look it up. Bed-sharing does help baby sleep better. They mimic mom’s breathing and is more relaxed being near you. Have you tried putting one of your shirts in the bassinet with him. Then at least he can smell you. Just the tee that you wore today. It’ll have your scent and he may be able to relax a little bit more.

Casen – If you let the water soak long enough then it’s thick enough, all the water absorbs in the oats. I don’t use milk. I’ll add ice cream after it’s warm.

I don’t want to do shields unless there are problems. They lower supply and baby gets too attached to them. If she has problems in the beginning then I’ll get her one. As for covers, I’ve said it before….I don’t like them. I don’t like how baby is forced to eat while breathing in his or her own CO2. I know I’m odd. I know they help some people but I’d rather help her with confidence in the beginning. She comes from a very green family and would be doing a homebirth if her husband wasn’t so set on a hospital. So they are doing a birthing center instead. I don’t think she’d use one either.

Bri shared this on Facebook, but it was so good and interesting I thought I’d pass it along here. http://bfmed.wordpress.com/2010/08/01/running-a-road-race-without-shoes/ I’m curious how many of you had a baby-friendly hospital or birth center. Mine was the only East Tennessee one.

Have you tried any of the methods suggested to increase milk supply. Mothers milk tea is one and oatmeal is another. We are still here to some extent.

oh and thanks ladies for the congrats. i’m beaming on the inside! i’ve worked a few weekends for a couple of hours and a couple of other inconviniences along the way, and i hate to get overtime b/c i’d rather spend that extra time with my little man so i haven’t really been finicially compensated for my extra work. to get a finicial compensation was really exciting and completely unexpected!

Had a really bad night with Ollie. He was up most of the night. James woke at his normal 6.30, rather than get up with him Robbie tried to bring him into our bed. James hates coming into our bed. He shouted so much he woke Ollie up, who now wont go back to sleep. Men just don’t think. On another note just because baby made a noise does not mean baby is hungry.

We got it while he was teething and it works. He wears it everyday. No problem. And they are too cute. I actually get compliments on it.

Bri- i always wondered how big Ella was in comparison to you guys with the big babies because i only had her weighed like 4 months ago and couldn’t remember what she weighed then. But we went to her one year appointment on Monday and she weighed 23lbs 2oz! So that’s very funny. Now i have a comparison, and i can’t imagine. That’s too funny. Also.. you always say that babies triple their birth weight by a year. She didnt’. Plus it’s like 2 weeks later. She still followed her curve. Do you think that’s bad?

so two funny breastfeeding stories…one: two nights ago Isaac woke me up to feed in the middle of the night, so I did and he unlatched, i pulled my shirt down, and we both started to drift back to sleep. I heard him russle and knew he had decided he wasn’t finished, but i decided i was. he’d had his drink. he could go back to sleep. so i’m half awake half asleep and all of a sudden he bit me through my shirt and my nipple. I screamed out. i couldn’t help it. i was shocked and it hurt. it was still sore last night at the first nurse but seems to be better now. story two: this morning i was running behind getting ready for work and isaac had woke up early. a really bad combination. anyhow he wanted me to hold him and i had just dried off from the shower and was about to floss and brush my teeth. i set him on the sink vanity with his legs dankling off the edge, and leaned up against him to pin him there. i gave him his tooth brush and the container of floss to occupy him which worked for about a minute until he realized the ‘fridge door’ was opened. He thought cool don’t mind if i do. so he nursed sitting on the sink while i flossed and brushed. if i hadn’t have been completely all natural i would have made seth take a picture. i sort of regret it already b/c it was so comical it should have been photographed but naked baby butt=cute, naked mommy butt=not so much. anyhow, i now it think i have nursed during every feasible activity and mode of transportaion except plane and train.
