    Hi Moms!!!
First of all, congrats to you all!!
I was in your shoes last summer, when I found out our baby had SUA. Just like most of you, I freaked out; cried, worried, read the internet and did not enjoy my pregnancy. DON’T DO THIS LADIES!!!! Being pregnant should be a wonderful time and unfortunately I let this minor setback take the fun out of it. I regret this so much. Luckily this was my 3rd pregnancy, so I had experienced it before and have a feeling I will again soon.
I also had a lot of extra ultra sounds, an echocariogram on the baby’s heart at 24 weeks and then more ultra sounds. They never found anything on any scans or growth checks. The last few weeks I had NST every week and even these were normal. Baby was born 11 days early, and no issue worth mentioning.
After all you can think about for 5 months is the unknown, and then the baby is born healthy and you probably won’t hear your doctor mention the words SUA again.
We did have a ultrasound done on his kidneys when he was 9 days old, and all was perfect.
I know you will still worry (as we did), but just place this in God’s hands and let Him handle it. You can not control anything.
I agree with someone elses post on here, that they need to give more explaination on the sites that you find about SUA. I think that the percentages are confusing. I am retty sure that when they give a percent of babies that are born with defects or major problems it is NOT SUA that causes these defects; it is just kind of a side effect. Meaning if you get the baby checked out on U/S and they do not find anything; it is highly unlikely you will find something major when he/she is born. I am no doctor, but have been through this one.
I hope I have lifted your spirits a bit. I know it is unsettling.
Hang in there. In a few months you will be writting a post to other mom’s that have just gotten the SUA news and trying to cheer them up 🙂
    Happy baby growing!!!

    Hello Ladies-
Once again, I only have great news to share. The week 32 US went great. Baby is over 4.5 lbs and measuring AHEAD of schedule. Kidneys, heart and liver are all perfect. SUA or no SUA, I am confident this baby is just fine. I don’t need any more ultrasounds, but I do start my non-stress tests in two weeks. I will keep you posted up until baby is HERE!

I just wanted to say thank you to all the positive comments posted here. I am 22 weeks with my first child. I was told last week during a screening and u/s with a specialist (for spina bifida) that her spine looked okay but he said she had a SUA but no other noticable problems. Of course I had no idea what this meant. I looked it up on the net later and just scared myself more. It was so great to see some positve stories about children with the same thing as mine. Good luck and once again, Thank you to all.

marcieb – i was in your shoes about 4 weeks ago – during my routine ultrasound the tech noticied i have 1A1V – while she said there were no apparent issues present, I did like most people and searched the internet and FREAKED OUT!! This forum has been great for me as well to hear all the positive stories – I have since had 2 more ultrasounds and my baby girl is growing right on schedule. We are healthy at 26 weeks and have no problems present with heart, kidneys, growth or anything – just have faith in God and trust in your doctors that they will take care of you and will let you know if anything looks out of the ordinary – I had to learn to trust my doctors and if they weren’t worried, I shouldn’t be.

Hello ladies, just to let you know that i have had my little girl on the 2nd june. they left her umbilical cord long after she was born so they could do a few tests and every thing seems ok. she weighed 7lb 15 oz so was a good healthy weight and shes doing just fine, had a few major problems during labour though. i have written my birth story on my profile under my children section if you wanted to read. its nice that babies with the SUA can come out ok. i wish all you pregnant mummies all the best. Emma xxxx

Good morning moms. I just wanted to report, I went to the doctor yesterday and received good report. Baby weighes 1.5 pounds and her spine still shows no signs of spina bifiida. Doctors did do 2nd confirmation on SUA but said that she seems to be gaining weight good. I’m in week 23 so 1.5 pounds looks about normal from what I have read. Thank you all for the encouraging comments and prayers. We still have a long way to go (115 days) but I feel a little better about everything. Hope everyone has a great day.

Update.. I am 32 weeks pregnant and Ashlyn is measuring perfect… I am diabetic, suffer APS and have 1A1V. So with two things that would cause her to be small and one thing that would cause her to be big, she is perfect right now!!! Good luck ladies and I hope you can share great news with future updates too!!!!

Just wanted to post another success story… I was diagnosed with SUA and CPC’s. Same story as most of the posts… docs told me everything looked good but I googled and googled and found all kinds of scary stuff. My son was born completely healthy. I too wish I just could have enjoyed my pregnancy, but this is definitely easier said than done. Hang in there ladies, it is all worth it in the end.

Hi all, I was in the same boat as you last year and with no information I also researched the internet and freaked out but my pregnancy went well and I gave birth to a healthy 8lb 1oz baby boy, he’s now 7 months old and is in perfect health weighing 16lbs 12oz’s, once we had our last scan at 36 weeks the words SUA were never mention again and we had no follow ups once Ryan was born not that we needed any, please try not to worry if they didn’t spot any other issues on your 20 week scan your baby will probably be fine. Good luck and enjoy your pregnancies xxx

Hello ladies- This is my update to you all. My daughter was born totally fine, 5 days LATE and over 9 pounds. I did the NSTs twice a week for the last month, and nothing was ever abnormal. Have faith…if there are no other abnormalaties, SUA can be a variation of normal. Another healthy baby of SUA reported here…good luck!
